Early days, I know, but if he is going to be our left wing back saviour he needs to get up to speed quickly.
He's been out injured for best part of a year, has had no competitive matches, doesn't even yet know his new team mates names - and thrown into a losing side shapeless and clueless.
He shouldn't have been thrown in yet - and only started the match because Jones is so desperate for a LWB, any LWB.
Allow the lad a proper chance to prove himself2 -
Perhaps it might have been a step too far, but Zach playing in the role played by Ramsay, or rather not played by Ramsay, would not have hurt his development, a bit of sibling rivalry and at least he would have played for the shirt.Gisappointed said:If we continue to play NJ's blinkered 3-5-2 the creativity comes from proper wing backs, and makes the CMs job easier, but we do need more physicality in that area, not slowish 5'9" journeymen. I would like to see Zach or Gough tried in the No.6 role, or perhaps both in 6 & 8.0 -
Well the other night Gavin Carter said we could pay 10m for a player but we chose not to so as not to create disharmony in the squad. So either our owners are minted but won’t spend or he was bullshitting. The Red Robin said:
The fact is, Chambers isn’t fit enough to go straight into a side that desperately needs players ready to play 90 minutes. If he’s first choice for us then I worry about our scouting and recruitment strategy. We’re shopping in the bargain basement - not not long ago Nathan Jones was telling everyone our owners were ‘minted’ - more nonsense.Oggy Red said:

It's probably worth remembering that Liverpool have the say in who they will allow out on loan. We can scout who we like but the owning club will want to see the player developed. It wouldn't surprise me if we did ask for Scanlon, Liverpool decided that it would suit them better if we were loaned Chambers instead, it might back up the story that a club pulled out on a deal whilst the player was undergoing a medical at the training ground. As for Chambers, I thought he showed quality in his passing but was caught out when defending, Amari Bell behind him and we might see more of him.bertpalmer said:

Chambers showed good pace in going on the overlap but Campbell didn't appear to realise he was there and Luke may have put off TC but that can be worked out on the training ground.
Coming into a team devoid of confidence including our better players this season: Jones, Ramsay and Carey no wonder that was a difficult 45 minutes for Chambers.
No disrespect to Karoy who is a wholehearted player who will get in the faces of players but Anderson's ability on the ball just isn't there and why has he been picked for the last 3 games ? Gilbert would surely walk/run into this team despite lacking a bit of physicality but at least he could control a football and pass the ball which surely should be a prerequisite for a Championship midfielder.
I want to see Apter on the pitch during a match and if we have to change formation then so be it because we have totally lost the plot. TC is an attacking wide player so no more asking him to defend on his wrong foot on the left of defence other than helping out a left footed left back.

Time to go 451/433- Tc and apter/tanto either wing, clarke and chambers full backs, leaburn and dykes sharing the 1 up front, kelman and godden to come on and finish - if we go down, we go down with a fight and trying to attack. I've supported NJ and still do but we have to change things up and get back on the front foot.3

I can’t face listening to it and reliving the agony just yet. Hopefully by midweek I’ll be able to!soapboxsam said:golfaddick said:Thought this mornings Charlton Live was an excellent listen. As was said, if yesterday was NJ's first game for us as manager then no-way would he had chosen that starting 11.
And the dissection of the set up & players used was spot on. Louis Mendez should send NJ a copy to listen to 😀
It's a painful inquest but I can really recommend the many issues that are raised by Louis, Paul, Tom and Benji on this morning's show and the link is on General Charlton.0 -
Yeah I don't doubt the third lowest budget claims but I also think that's aided by how crazy some of the budgets are in this league + sides with parachute payments.fenaddick said:

I think the owners are " minted" but the next level up of spending required to be out of that budget bottom 3 at this level is why the new investment is being sought. I would guess it's Pompey and ofc Sheffield Wednesday below us and Blackburn/Oxford around a similar figure.0 -
I think regardless of how big (or not) the budget is for this season, it doesn’t seem to have been particularly well spent. As an example larger fees than we’ve spent for many a year have gone on Kelman, Apter and Tanto. One came off the bench, one never made it that far and the third wasn’t even in the squad.MarcusH26 said:

If all the figures are right that's £7m on 3 players that aren't starting. That's really disappointing to have that budget tied up on players that aren't first names on the team sheet.se9addick said:

This game showed the physical dominance of ‘the dark side’ compared with our lightweight players.
The stark difference in the tunnel before they came out said it all. At least half their team were 6ft 6 or + and our lot looked intimidated before they were on the pitch. Lloyd did his best but every other heading challenge was lost and 50-50’s only went one way. We don’t just need more left footed players, we need physically imposing players all over the pitch to survive.0 -
Just ignore or laugh at him, he doesn't like either, getting annoyed by his stupid comments is just playing into his hands. Or do what I did, quote his post and doctor it.Blucher said:

Saw this thumbnail earlier and thought to myself... Yeah that's what a proper local derby looks like, when both teams are well up for it.0 -
I think everyone from the owners to the fans, has received a real shock into how tough this league is. We have realised that there is little difference from the Premiership in terms of how you approach it to have a chance of staying there. From what we were spending in league one to what is required now takes a huge leap, if we manage to stay up, then there will have to be departures and the necessary quality would be brought in to replace them, failure to do that now or the possibility of having to do that in the summer will mean going back to league one.DOUCHER said:mascot88 said:I'm so frustrated - my brain is trying to convince me League One is better for us as a defence mechanism against what is increasingly looking inevitable.
Sod it - let's sack him.
Going down with a whimper and looking SOOOOOO weak defensively is no way to live.
He has clearly upset everyone in the building - we have gone from very good defensively to utter headless chickens.
The captain has called him out, probably at the behest of multiple senior players, and his courage has been rewarded with the end of his Charlton career.
Anderson yesterday was appalling - he was scared, naive and not ready for this type of game.
We need new ideas with these players, the entire system relies on a solid back 5 and we havn't had one for months.
So it's an entirely new set of ideas we need or several million spend to ensure we can play the way Jones wants to.
Gilespey will get spit roasted against 80% of the teams in this division.
Fuck it - maybe league one is better for us and we can stop dreaming, just accept sub 9k crowds and enjoy the odd bigger tie when a championship big wig get's relegated.
Even when we had no money in the eighties and early nineties, the championship was our baseline - even with joirneyman and youth players we managed to put out competitive teams and stay up easily - we must have paid the going rate then and we need to now or accept a drop into that shithole division - got a bit of the window left and the owners need to stump up1
