  • Considering Jones said they were looking for a central midfielder the fact that one was not recruited whilst also letting one go is a bit of failure.

Overall I think we are probably stronger than before Jan but questions will be asked if we get an injury in the middle

having a great career to be fair, especially with the slower start after leaving us
Doesn’t look good on Big Sam not playing him at Everton does it.
I heard he was a lazy trainer which would not go down well with Sam.  Maybe he matured and realised he need to put the effort in.

We signed Coady after Jones said this. Think his quote was something like “wanting someone to control the game in midfield”. That sounds exactly like what we want Coady to do

Coady will get run ragged might control with his passes but physically it’s a concern

Poveda would be baffling. Where would he even play?
Attacking RWB option or maybe number 10. Basically Apter but won’t kick up a fuss if he’s not playing as it looks from his career he’s quite used to it
If they signed me, I wouldn't kick up a fuss if I didn't play.

Indeed, I'd kick up a fuss if I did get picked.

A bit disappointed Karoy going without a replacement.

Out of the 6 midfielders left, Karoy gives something different. He has more energy, more aggression, and can press better than any of those six. He’s not so good with the ball as others, but i can’t believe there’s not going to be games in the coming months where there wouldn’t have been value having a centre mid pressing high against an opposition with a sitting deep play dictator, or even just a simple disrupter in the middle.

Ask Karoy to be a box to box baller or play dictator and he’ll currently come up short. But I thought there was a definite squad role for him in the run in. If we were replacing with better then great, but we haven’t replaced with anything
Anderson's most recent appearances for us though were very much in the holding midfielder position, where he was pretty hopeless, and where Coady seems like a direct replacement.

I like Anderson in that advanced pressing role, but he hasn't really played that position this season.

I think that’s the issue. His awareness and the defensive side of his game isn’t good enough to play the holding role but he’s not progressive enough going forward to be the 8.

Hopefully a run of games does him good. Be interesting to see where Blackpool play him.

    A big meh from me.

We've won against 9 and 10 men though so I guess nothing to worry about and our midfield is still incapable of producing chances.

Will see how it goes but I think the idea is to surround him with legs. Playing him with Carey and one of Docherty/Coventry is plenty of legs in midfield to do the running. Seemed to work well against Leicester but obviously it’s early days and was against 10 for most of it

    Kaminski
    Clarke Kayne Collins Coady Campbell
    Coventry Costello
    Carey
    Kelman

Little bit of artistic license but we can nearly put out a side of "Hard Cees"

Just needed to keep Karoy around or recalled Kanu...

Jones admitted we needed midfield upgrades then delivered none. Now, for the rest of the season we have little or no pace from where we are desperately slow. Yes, the squad overall looks 'stronger' but have to admit feel a little disappointed

Feels like NJ is up to his tricks again honestly, making things just about hard enough that you absolutely have to just hope and have faith that things go well. Letting Anderson go without a replacement and relying on young players to come back completely successfully from injury is peak Jones. If it comes off he looks like some sort of demented genius. If it doesn't, he just looks demented.

I had completely forgot about Zach Mitchell, while I don't expect to see much of him, he's part of the squad and is yet another CB. So maybe the "Coady brought in as a CDM" talk might have some merit.

    RCB: Ramsay, Sichenje
    CB: Jones, Burke
    LCB: Bell, Gillesphey

With Mitchell and Gough still around in the first team...Coady is better off in midfield tbh.

All I can read into Anderson going out (which doesn’t free up a squad place as he qualifies as U21 still I believe?) means Knibbs might be fit sooner than we think?

7 in, not bad for a January window.

If anything, I'm more concerned about the #10, if Carey gets injured...it's either a very ineffective Berry or an inexperienced Fullah, could TC play there? Certainly has the dribbling and pace but you need the vision and passing as well...

Overall, I'm pleased with the window, especially that, so far, Mbick hasn't left.  Would have been nice to get the young lad in from Liverpool.

Knibbs? And then there's always our international #10

Cawley mentioned on substack that "there were also a couple of potential moves which failed to come to fruition"

Well, that's left us extremely light in midfield now. Disappointing.
At least 2 players for each role. Light in quality maybe but should be enough to stay up
Apart from cover at LWB & LB / LCB. We are a step away from being back to Gillesephy at LCB / LB  & either TC or right footed player at LWB. Look what that did to the balance of the team over the last few months.

We may stay up but it will need good fortune & by the skin of our teeth. Not sure why this area was not strengthened in this window.

I wonder if we recalled Dixon because he can play in the 10 and national league loans don't have to be in the transfer window (and I believe don't count towards the "played for 2 clubs" quota?) so if we're in the shit for a number 10 in the next few weeks he's an emergency option on the bench, and can still go somewhere to play football if we don't need him?

It's not like I'm wanting/expecting him to play at all, but he's another body around at least

You're wrong. We were in for Mark Herrita from Eintracht Frankfurt.

    Clarke looks excellent.
    Chambers looks very promising
Dykes will do a job as will Coady
    Fevrier too soon to say.
    Collins a wildcard.
Brooks an irrelevance for this season.

It's a decent enough transfer window and we are certainly improved.

My main concern is how reliant we remain on Bell and Chambers staying fit for the season.  Their fitness, could well decide our division next season to a great extent.

    Good summary
