Kayne Ramsay

Agree with that, especially the point some good performances have been there, it's just the consistency that's dropped off. It's not true that he's played badly every game since Millwall at home.Sage said:Think where the defence has been so mismatch throughout the season, it’s not particularly helped his game. He’s had Apter, Bree, and Clarke all next to him on that side, he’s also played left back a couple of times. In 30 games it’s a lot of change. I do also think he’s not been the same since the sending off back in September, but we have seen his quality in a number of games since, just not at the consistency we had come to expect.
Last season he got away with so much because he could recover with strength, pace and that quality tackling he has. This season players are more clever and have more about them. With that, Ramsay has had to improve areas and that isn’t going to be a quick thing, there are elements that he needs to improve, his concentration and anticipation. He didn’t need to have loads of it before but he does now.
I think if he signs a new contract, we’ll see a marked improvement in his performances and he can kick on again. The longer that drags on, the more I see him being sold in the summer because the club are not going to let assets run into the last 12 months without confidence that we can sort something out.
I don't think we can read anything into not signing a new deal at this stage, it makes sense from his point of view to wait until we know what division we'll be in next season. Same goes for TC, though we have an optional year in his case.

I don’t think he’s a premier league player . Not good enough on the ball . He’s a top end championship player when he’s playing well .CAFCsayer said:Still think he is our player with the highest ceiling... Has all of the attributes to play at a higher level, just needs to learn that he can't overplay at this level and get away with it by bouncing players off of him and doing them for pace every time. He is only just 25 aswell1 -
Seems like he’s either brilliant or dreadful at the moment it’s very strange. Whether it’s the contract situation or realisation this level isn’t his playground it’s seem to have gotten to him.
Would love him to stay because in reality he’s young it’s his first season at the level he’s versatile got unique attributes and is better than the other L1 lot who got us up. But if he wants to leave or doesn’t want to extend his deal it’s not one we have to keep at all costs and should look to Sell0 -
I can't be certain, but I think it was the unnecessary crossfield pass that he immediately clutched his left hamstring afterwards, so either he's nursing something a bit, or it was an attempt to spare his own blushes.Garrymanilow said:
Not really. He had a horrific clearing header that went straight to one of their players in a dangerous area, he played a totally unnecessary crossfield pass that he got wrong and set up a counter for QPR and he was comically deep at the end during that chance that Kaminski saved, which is a problem he's had for as long as he's been playing centre back for us (especially shown in the away game at Wrexham last season) and doesn't seem to have improved on. He's young, he'll improve and it wasn't a total disaster of a performance but at times we kept that clean sheet in spite of him. He needs a bit more time on the basics of being a central defender especially now that his pace can't bail him out every time like it did in L1RC_CAFC said:
Agreed. Other than that one horrendous moment involving Kaminski, he was a decent part of a clean sheet on Friday.DubaiCAFC said:Part of a back 3 that kept 2 clean sheets on bounce.. yes, hasn’t been at his best, but even then he is still one of the best around as ride sided CB of back 3He was an ever present in League one and built up that consistency with his power and strength. He’s not quite had that this season. But I think there are signs it’s coming back.7 -
I watched him after that horror pass and leg clutch and he didn't seem to be moving differently after but i still think there is something wrong (injury wise) thats putting him off balance and i hope it gets sorted soon4

Mate honestly if you can sit there and say Ramsey isn’t as good as we all think, you are well due the pelters you receive!RonnieMoore said:Don’t think Ramsey performances have changed that much once again the Charlton fans have gone way over the top on a player that not as good as they believe .. like so many not just ours but other clubs … where players are to good for league one but not quite good enough for the championship .. there sort of stuck in the middle that’s why you seen so many yo-yo clubs …. Last season Ramsey mis-comings were not punished… and he had the pace to get himself out of it.Ramsey needs to keep it simple stop trying to be clever and just lump it clear at times ..He is an absolutely cracking talent who’s just gone through a dip like every player does. Not many other players in the whole division let alone our squad makes the last ditch challenge on the Ipswich striker at Portman Road! Up until the Millwall home game he was easily one of our best performing players along with Lloyd Jones!5 -
Ramsay is absolutely mustard as far as I’m concerned. The fella has gone off the boil a bit and made a few uncharacteristic mistakes but he’ll adapt soon enough. To be honest (as Ronnie said) maybe he might be better off keeping it simple for a bit. Still one of the first names on the team sheet for me.8

Agreed, as a defender you miss control a ball, or under hit a pass, everyone remembers it.. in a game, midfield and forwards constantly do that.. I don’t think any issue with Ramsey, he took his eye off the ball slightly on Friday, then panicked a little bitTomCAFC said:Ramsay is absolutely mustard as far as I’m sure concerned. You have to try to get him to resign early this summer if it becomes clear there’s less interest in him than was anticipated.

Re-sign?3

Reckon he'll be going sooner than that Cal. Some are saying it could be hours rather than weeks / months mateCallumcafc said:You have to try to get him to resign early this summer if it becomes clear there’s less interest in him than was anticipated.0 -

Still got 18 months to agree a new deal, I am confident he will sign again. If they put a premier league release clause in it with a decent value, I'd be happy with that.2

Ramsey was excellent last season when we were pushing teams back, he was able to focus on his attacking strength and get up and down the right hand side.
He has found it tougher this season as he has been penned in a lot more with people coming at him and opportunities to get forward few and far between.
He is a great natural athlete, but has some defensive weaknesses, but you have to expect that from a bloke who was playing at Harrogate Town just two years ago.1 -
I think that's the sum of it. He's doing about as well as you could hope for a 25 year old playing his first season in the Championship after playing L1 last season, L2 the season before and only having about 6 months experience playing in his current position at the start of this season. Sometimes he's great, sometimes he's not. Often he's a bit of both in the same match. He needs to limit the games where there are multiple errors in one game but in general he's not looked out of his depth and you'd imagine he'll look better again next season. I don't really see him signing a new deal as I think he has ambitions of playing higher than us soon but fingers crossed he sticks with us, he's an enjoyable player to have.Ormiston_Addick said:Ramsey was excellent last season when we were pushing teams back, he was able to focus on his attacking strength and get up and down the right hand side.

For me , he is useless with his head. So many games recently balls have come over and then he’s nodded it to an opponent or skimmed off his head. This is one big weakness2

Bless him, although some of them were just passes to the player next to him. He's a self fulfilling prophesy, think he needs to have his highlights reels for his own happiness which is totally fine, but to have them he needs to have a good game, and to have a good game he needs to be in a good place mentally...0

Is there a reason why most commenters on here have decided that Ramsay is leaving in the summer? Is it just putting two and two together or are there any concrete rumours?
From memory, Jones said we are looking to tie him down to a new contract and these things take time. Is the fact he hasn't signed it yet the cause for this belief? He is a great asset: 25 years old, brilliant athlete, so composed on the ball, and an aggressive defender who does not shy away from any challenge. I know he has been a bit up and down lately as he adjusts to the level, but I would absolutely love to keep him.7 -
I wouldn't say it's guaranteed but it's not baseless speculation either. There's the contract issue, him having the quality and potential that gives him more value than most of the squad and an athletic, physical RCB has just been bought in January.elbiglad said:Is there a reason why most commenters on here have decided that Ramsay is leaving in the summer? I wouldn't presume we are planning to get rid, but I do think the possibility of his exit is taken seriously.0 -
Had a couple of poor moments last night as well. Has a mistake a game in him atmScoham said:1 -
A few posters have said this season and last that Ramsay sees himself as capable of playing at a higher level and reckons he can do so sooner rather than later. I think that combined with him only having a year to run on his contract at the end of this season has generally got people thinking he won't be signing a new deal and so will move on. I think he'll have suitors, he's a good age with a Premier League academy background. His technical fundamentals are good, he's strong and quick if a little injury prone and the worst parts of his game are all things that can be taught, like better positioning. I think other, richer Championship teams would be a bit mad not to go for him and most of them can offer more money than us as well as a more likely route to the top. I guess we'll seeelbiglad said:Is there a reason why most commenters on here have decided that Ramsay is leaving in the summer? If Ramsay had been able to play at RCB all year this thread would have no one having doubts about him. He has been shuffled across the line because he's probably our most capable defender. He has great all round attributes, with the one weakness probably being aerial nous - timing of jumps and how to be physical in the aerial battle. Everything else is fine. I am not remotely worried about his performance when he is in the team. And maybe his star is a little less bright than before, because he's now actually back in a semblance of a team with balance and structure, with proper wing backs in a 5-3-2, so everyone else's game looks better as well.
We absolutely must sign him to a new deal. No question about that for me.8 -
Imagine contract renewals are at loggerheads with Ramsay, Jones and Coventry - All three have their contracts expiring in 2027 and I imagine they wont want to sign an extension at this current stage, what with us in a relegation battle0
-
TC too once we activate his extension. Completely makes sense from their point of view, if we go down they’re all players who should get interest from Championship clubs.ForeverAddickted said:Imagine contract renewals are at loggerheads with Ramsay, Jones and Coventry - All three have their contracts expiring in 2027 and I imagine they wont want to sign an extension at this current stage, what with us in a relegation battle

I think if we were confident on tying Ramsay down we wouldn’t have spent what we have on Sichenje. Understand the purpose of quality in squad depth, but if you ask the majority of fans u get just under 2M you can either get cover for Ramsay or replace one of the midfielders it’s a simple answer. Hope I’m wrong but it felt like a contingency signing2
