tactical masterclass tonight from jones3

timken said:tactical masterclass tonight from jonesWe wanted it more than them (will share my thoughts in the post match thread), but I am just going to say it was more about the players than Jones tonight.I am not hating on Jones, but I am not getting carried away after playing a team that is mid table and has a cup game (against Premier League opposition) at the weekend. If we beat Southampton (a week on Saturday) I will be more impressed, and give him credit then.11

Genuine question... If you've called for Jones to be sacked twice now, during the next bad run, will you do it a third time?14

…is doing it again.
Keep the faith.6 -
Who brought in the players last month that have made us stronger? Nathan deserves the credit already.JustFloydRoad said:timken said:tactical masterclass tonight from jonesWe wanted it more than them (will share my thoughts in the post match thread), but I am just going to say it was more about the players than Jones tonight.I am not hating on Jones, but I am not getting carried away after playing a team that is mid table and has a cup game (against Premier League opposition) at the weekend. If we beat Southampton (a week on Saturday) I will be more impressed, and give him credit then.12 -
Absolutely love the outrage on twitter from Stoke fans at Jones.13

Performance levels against QPR and Stoke been very good1 -
And which manager is responsible for getting the players into that mindset?JustFloydRoad said:timken said:tactical masterclass tonight from jonesWe wanted it more than them (will share my thoughts in the post match thread), but I am just going to say it was more about the players than Jones tonight.I am not hating on Jones, but I am not getting carried away after playing a team that is mid table and has a cup game (against Premier League opposition) at the weekend. If we beat Southampton (a week on Saturday) I will be more impressed, and give him credit then.
We've had plenty of managers where the opposite tends to be true.14 -

What makes a good manager?
Many different things contribute, are required. Tactical awareness, vision, motivational skills, work ethic.
One big part of it is praising players and embracing things that are being done well when they're going well.
Another one is seeing when players are doing things badly and holding them to account, criticising them where necessary - leaving them out.
To his credit, whatever some think about Jones (I struggle with him), he is not shy of giving people shit, calling them out when they f*ck up often very publicly - we all see that visibly on the touchline and it's why he's "fallen out with" or frozen out several players across the course of his time at Charlton and his entire managerial career.
Criticism when warranted is a fundamental part of management in every single field of life including football. Jones is rightly not shy about giving it out, and he is also very rightly on the end of it and held to account when he's doing his job poorly, and he's certainly done a great deal wrong as well as a great deal right this season.
Full credit to him for playing 6 at the back the last few games - back to absolute basics, reversing on his Docherty position and putting him and his leadership back in, and scrapping out a couple of absolutely vital results.
He will continue to be challenged and criticised when he f*cks up.

Must be hard to get praise in some households on here. He may not be everyone's cup of tea but as with last season and this when he has a fit squad he creates a team hard to beat.12

If anyone can give me a name of someone they’d like to replace Jones that we could reasonably expect would come then I’d like to see it. We cried out for a manager that showed passion and felt a real connection with the club. That’s Jones. We cried out for a manager with a proven track record of promotion. That’s Jones. In literally a few days longer than two years Jones has saved us from what was looking like a genuine possibility of relegation to a promotion to having a side that’s making a real fist of survival in what’s considered one of the toughest leagues in the world. Is he perfect ? No he bloody well isn’t. I think he’s stubborn and sometimes blinkered and he’s occasionally as mad as a box of frogs but I’d be absolutely gutted if we parted company with Nathan Jones until our journey is complete. I really don’t think it is. The Millwall defeat was humiliating but when have we had a manager that has come out and said what he said after that game. I’m 100% sure that hurt him as much as us. 100% support from me.18

i think he's done beyond brilliant in turning it around but he's still a real unlikeable prick , which doesn't matter one jot while establishing ourselves in the Championship.
Has he got what it takes to take us to the next level and promotion to the Prem , not sure he's ever done the job before but the here and now has been perfect , so far
Don't play Bell in an unwinnable cup tie v Chelsea though next time , it's not rocket science6 -

risking the injury prone ones was my issue ,
i'd have played none of the decent players but i'm a lot more concerned about league positioning and not that bothered re a cup shock against a team we used to turn over regular in the top flight
and wow if we beat chelseas reserves

Credit to NJ how he's utilised the loan signings. We're not pretty to watch but we are grinding out results.

One of only four managers in 40 years to win promotion for us. He is already in our history books, unlike the parade of other small time losers we have had to cope with in the past twenty years.
Now keep us in this division and then consolidate and he will become a legend
Although obviously...a total nutjob.13 -
Is he unlikeable ? I think he comes across really well in his interviews. Definitely think he has a connection with Charlton over and above his salary. Supportive of his players. Modest in victory and honest in defeat. Shows fan like passion in the heat of battle. Bit looney but who cares. Looney can be good.oohaahmortimer said:i think he's done beyond brilliant in turning it around but he's still a real unlikeable prick , which doesn't matter one jot while establishing ourselves in the Championship.

He had to start his strongest team to avoid getting pelters but I once it was clear we weren't getting anything out of the game I can't believe he didn't take off some of the players to protect them. Bell was the prime candidate to come off and instead he moved him to wingback to go up against Estevao. I would have been hauling TC, Bell and Jones off and putting absolutely anyone else there rather than risk them any further. His game management is quite strange at timesTheHerminator said:

Your right the Chelsea game really didn't matter, sod the fans that turned up thinking we could turn them over and should play our strongest side they wouldn't be the ones watching league one dross next season. It was a day to enjoy a full stadium and not make a decision that cost us dearly for a few games after.oohaahmortimer said:

Love it when fans give ex Managers/ players pelters all game ( we do it to ) and get all hurty feelings when they give it back .

Agreed but as i said in an earlier post, i'd expect similar if not worse from our fans if it was Pardew giving it to us.stoneroses19 said:

If he was a opposition manager, 99.9% of us would think hes a knobhead ! But its fun when its on your side though. Bit like shit house players (which we've not had enough of over the years) who people dislike.ShootersHillGuru said:

It's entertaining, but there's absolutely no way id want to sit behind the dugout every week.7 -
I do think he is quite a hard person to like yes. He is very intense and doesn't seem to have any kind of an off switch, plus the absolute self-belief he has is hard to distinguish from arrogance.ShootersHillGuru said:

All of which does make him a great manager I am sure, I have nothing but admiration for his abilities but I would not describe him as someone I like on a personal level at all - which is by the least important factor in a manager anyway.3
