First round of fixtures completed and it’s really hard to see beyond France as this year’s winners. The game against my Ireland was quite literally what the term “men v boys” was coined for. They were bigger, stronger and quicker all over the pitch and a real joy to watch.

The conditions in Rome were a real leveller and Italy’s quick start gave them a base to play out a great game for them. They’ve had a few false dawns in the past, winning a game but then regressing the next year, but they do seem better equipped now to manage games and more tactically astute.

Hard to really gauge England after that game. Wales are currently useless with 15 players, let alone with 13. They really are a mess and the WRFU should be looking at how France reset themselves a few years ago, rather than the pointless tinkering they’ve been doing. Needs a clear out at board level to do that though and I don’t think they’re anywhere near having the will to force that through. Felt sorry for Itoje when he came on and then straight off, after multiple England fouls, but can’t argue with the decision.
  • So is it effectively between England and France now?
I’d say so but England go to Paris which I think gives France a big advantage.

France are established and have a couple of the best players currently playing the game. If we manage to beat then in Paris it will be an incredible achievement. We are raw materials and a lot of potential

Great game between Ireland and Italy. Ireland won but as a neutral felt Italy deserved something from that match.

Shocking first half from Ireland, Prendergast was awful, much better when he was off. Italy played  very well and a draw wouldn’t have been an injustice.
  • Hey this is not the start from England I expected. Or wanted.
  • Fantastic touch from Russell.

Annoyingly way better start than us.

This is why the current rules of rugby are wrong - when a player has eyes on the ball and the oppo clatters into him and the first guy is penalised. Same happened to an Irish player today. What are they meant to do - dodge out of the way? It’s losing sight of being a contact sport.

I disagree. Thought that one was completely avoidable

I’m supporting Scotland here but looked to me like Steyn clattered Arundel with his knee up? In football we’d go mad if a goalie did that? But I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve always found the rules of rugby pretty impenetrable.

You just can't challenge soemone who's in the air like that. Arundel was never going to get the ball so should have held half a yard for Steyn to gather and land. Should have ben extra cautious as he was on a yellow
