It was not a tame shot by a long shot if you sat behind the goal the shot was very hard low , come through players then swung in front of Kaminski.. who did not have time to react ..usetobunkin said:NJ can't do a blind thing about a GK that has a tamely struck shot form outside the area go through his legs.
The Ref was booking anything in a Red shirt, and I think we were lucky to end up with 11 on the pitch at FT.
Pompey were running with pace and purpose and finding space all over the pitch leaving us chasing shadows.
All the good work against 9 man Sheff Utd 10 man Leicester , and the battling draw against an injury struck QPR
is forgotten.
We must now get something from Southampton, and WBA is a must win, given we have the circus and the NFL coming to town and are away to Northern cloggers Boro.6 -
Think people also forget our performance was heavily affected by the ridiculous number of bookings .. where we would press right into the player we had 5/ 6 players first half who could not get tight so gave Pompey players more freedom on the ball8

So NJ was wrong when he said it was a goalkeeping mistake? Even the third goal we could all see what the bloke was going to do and yet Kaminski was surprised by it, he had an absolute shocker last night and it wasn’t the 1st time, Mannion deserves a go after that IMO.RonnieMoore said:

Surely the black clashes more with the shorts.JustFloydRoad said:Next up back to the black kit, I don't know what happened to wearing blue (and before someone says it clashes with their kit, we wore it vs Sheffield United)0 -
But the early bookings weren’t exactly underserved. Clarke kicked the ball away. That’s a yellow card. It was a stupid thing to do. Chambers was late, that’s a yellow.RonnieMoore said:Think people also forget our performance was heavily affected by the ridiculous number of bookings .. where we would press right into the player we had 5/ 6 players first half who could not get tight so gave Pompey players more freedom on the ball1 -
Personally I don’t feel we bought cheaply, especially within the context of FFP or whatever they call it now. But it looks like we’ve bought incorrectly.golfaddick said:
We keep being told that the owners will spend more this summer. Partly (we are told) is that they werent sure if they could trust NJ last month because of the players he brought in last summer (3 of whom are now out on loan) and partly because they will have to.hoof_it_up_to_benty said:It will be an achievement if NJ keeps us up but I can't see a lot of progress in terms of the footvall we play. We're pretty poor to watch and our midfield lacks pace and quality.
If we stay up we will undoubtedly be in another relegation battle next season...
If they had spent more / better last summer then we might not be in this predicament.
Buy cheap, buy twice. We gambled on top end league one players and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out. Lessons must be learned if we stay up and we will need a better summer window.I still think Kelman has something to offer and is a clever player that would benefit from better service. Carey has done reasonably well given the step up, but the jury is absolutely out on JRC, Tanto, Apter and Knibbs. You could argue Apter has not been given a fair look in and didn’t fit the system, but it speaks volumes that he and Tanto have both been loaned back to league one.If we stay up then Jones has earned his right to have another crack at it. not to get too far ahead of myself, I would be concerned about how we will set up again next year if we do stay up. I think his brand of football is sensible given our squad, dare I say lack of footballing talent, but I fear if we don’t bring some real quality in, we’re likely to drop like Plymouth did in their second season and Oxford are doing now5 -

Fully agree @brightonaddick87 with you...your last point hits the nail squarely on the head...I do believe the key to our survival relies on a strong midfield, pressing and supplying strikers ( who we certainly have), with reliable service to regularly score. It's clearly just not happening now on a regular basis. Portsmouth scored three...when did we last do that? This is solely about Survival..and netting goals regularly....others around is in the Table most certainly are...brightonaddick87 said:I don't think the inconsistency of our performances, and the swings from 'maybe we're a limited but hard-to-beat side' to 'that performance was relegation form bad' will change whilst we play the way we do. So much of how we are set up to play is to do with what we do out-of-possession - the pressing, forcing errors, catching the opposition out when they've just won the ball back etc. We don't generally dominate possession, I don't think, and I'm not sure we want to, given that our chances generally come from the chaos of winning the ball back high up and winning second balls. When we do play out from the back, I always find it hard to tell if we are deliberately trying to draw teams on to us to create gaps up the pitch, or if the defenders are just terrified of playing a forward ball to a static midfield. Either way, it has a tendency to invite pressure, at which point we just go long.It feels like the system has momentum when it works (Leicester at home is the one for me where I thought 'we'll be fine if we keep playing like this', but you look at where they are now and perhaps that was a misjudgement), but I just don't think the players are fit or mentally sharp enough to do it consistently. We go man-to-man a lot when trying to win the ball back and it leaves little margin for error. If everyone is physically and mentally at it, we nick wins. If *any* of the starting 11 aren't, we fall to pieces. If teams are smart enough to pull our midfield around, it also becomes a gaping hole very quickly and our defence is generally not good with players running at them (the Southampton horror show).I think these problems are all baked into how we play. Would it change with better versions of the types of player we have now? Maybe. We'd probably be a more solid mid-table Championship side.I think Jones is our best bet for the foreseeable future and he obviously made this style of play work in the Championship at Luton, but I do wonder if the game has moved on even in just the last few years, in terms of the general level of physicality and tactical sharpness, to the point where being a dogged out of possession side just doesn't really cut it consistently anymore. When we play well but draw, Jones has a tendency to say we weren't clinical enough or needed a bit more quality. To my mind that's all part of the problem - chances are generally at a premium for our strikers, so the style of play relies on minimal chances being converted. We don't have the money to buy the kind of striker that can guarantee that, so bemoaning a lack of clinical edge or quality starts to look like a refusal to actually work with what he has. That recent Kelman goal feels like a case in point; great finish from a difficult chance, but the best case scenario is probably that he scores 1 in 5 of those. So either we play a way that creates more (proper) chances, or we buy a better striker. I can understand why the owners might have some reluctance at handing over anymore cash given how it was spent in the summer.I think Jones would find it hard to argue with the claim that, for different reasons, his track record at the club with strikers isn't good: May, Ahadme, Oloafe, Kelman. Leaburn, for me, works his socks off and does exactly what is asked of him but we are not getting the best out of him given he is also a skilful player but we mainly launch the ball at his head. Campbell is clearly best when able to cut inside and shoot but even the hybrid winger/striker role doesn't present him enough opportunity to do so. Godden is perhaps the exception, but he is an experienced player who looks to have sadly had another injury setback. They can't all be the problem: there is a lack of goals in the team because of a lack of chances created.I don't feel as strongly about Kaminski as some others (though he was at fault for the first and I'd say third goals last night), but I also don't entirely understand the fee and wages spent on a goalkeeper who can't kick in a team that plays long ball. It's all quite disjointed. Jones is right that he took us from the depths of League One to the Championship in one full season, and that accomplishment buys him a lot of time for me. If he keeps us up, it will be the first time in a long time anyone has done that. I *do* think he could make us a more rounded team, but as others have said, it all comes down to the wingbacks with how he wants to play, so we would need serious, serious quality in that department to properly improve. That will cost money - my guess is that Jones will need to show to the owners, via survival in the Championship and/or better justifications for players he wants to buy, that he is the right person to spend it.

Spot on, your last point. Clearly, I also very much hope that NJ will secure our survival, this campaign, and then leverage further targeted spending to keep us up (and moving) ahead.2

Agree with you to an extent, but being on bookings shouldn't have deterred players from getting their bodies in the way of Devlin's efforts.RonnieMoore said:Think people also forget our performance was heavily affected by the ridiculous number of bookings .. where we would press right into the player we had 5/ 6 players first half who could not get tight so gave Pompey players more freedom on the ball

Let's be serious here. It was another one he got wrong ... he did seem to be giving a few our way in the second half, perhaps he was worried about getting out alive after his piss-poor first-half showingCallumcafc said:
No chance. Adams stepped across Ramsay looking for / initiating that contact. One of the rare moments the ref was clever enough to spot what was going on.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
I think we got away with the one in the second half though when Ramsay shoved their guy over. Looked far more of a pen than the one he did give and i'd have wanted it given if it was down the other end. Pretty sure the ref gives that if he hadn't given them the first half one.Callumcafc said:
It was a low quality game, their right back aside.Fortune 82nd Minute said:

He does seem genuinely deflated in that interview.
I know people love to slate xG but it does paint a picture on nights like this.
Charlton 0.80
Pompey 1.14 (0.79 came from a very harsh pen so 0.35 otherwise)
Don’t think Jones is wide of the mark to say we had the better chances. But I won’t argue we did enough to deserve to win the game.
If Kaminski doesn’t flap and Devlin doesn’t spank one in off the post, we’re talking about a 1-1 draw with a harsh Pompey penalty.2 -

In seriousness, I believe you are right, start of the season we wanted to play from the back, these last few weeks it's been leaving the keepers hands in a drop kick, but this I believe is because of the introduction of Dykes. The problem last night was that we were second to every knock down. Not a fan of route one Eugene, because it is limited, but if it gets us to safety, then I'll take it, the one thing that everyone agrees on, is that there is a lack of quality throughout this side and that is probably another reason for route one.EugenesAxe said:

I think you are missing FA's point. It's only a 'big managerial shortcoming' if it's actually true ! Generally, a complete load of bollocks would not use facts or data to reach a result or successful conclusion to it's premise . Hope that's cleared that up for you Eugene.EugenesAxe said:

The point still stands though, we have been playing hoof-ball regardless who we play.3 -
Fully agree. It was our's to win...and we yet again threw away what should have been a nailed on three points on home turf....what is very annoying is, others around us most assuredly won't...the end of season clock is very much ticking.....ForeverAddickted said:

Right, I’ve had another half a day to get over that shit - the one bright spark was that fevrier might just be half useful (any forward going players with a bit of pace could hardly not be in this squad ) but I’ve also remembered that dykes blatantly pushed their defender right in front of the absolute plank half wit referee so should actually have been a clean 3-0 which would have been a fairer reflection on the game - I will now consign this game to history along with that Millwall debacle and look for a positive reaction on Saturday 🤞🤞🤞0

Just seen the footage of Jones walking to the tunnel having a go. Proper unhinged that!

After Millwall and last night I would have wanted him castrated, tortured and then be- headed - a day later and I’m back behind him and putting it in perspective - that’s football - fans are allowed to let the highs get too high and lows too low because they can - NJ knows that just like he referred to an argument with the mrs - when I walk out the ground and couldn’t give a shit is when I’ll stop goingelbiglad said:I heard several people near me calling for him to be sacked at the end of the game last night. Now I'm not saying they were upstanding citizens and MENSA members, but they were definitely calling for him to go.0 -

I think NJ missed a trick here. Instead of taking off some of the players that had been booked he should have left them all on & told them to commit more fouls. Get 4 sent off & the ref would have had to abandoned the match 😀.RonnieMoore said:Think people also forget our performance was heavily affected by the ridiculous number of bookings .. where we would press right into the player we had 5/ 6 players first half who could not get tight so gave Pompey players more freedom on the ball

No surprise that Jones isn't going to come out and say what got said, but thanks for posting as didnt see that1

I really think sky are missing a trick not having managers grilled by fans for 10 minutes after each game - we’d be absolute box office - jones ain’t one for platitudes or turning the other cheek9

Didnt look that way to us in the east stand, they were side by side and the attacker deliberately swerved into Ramsay and fell over. Simulation2

I think the reason I and maybe others are so pissed off is the fact that we are playing shit Pulisesque hoofball. If we went out and had a go by playing a quick passing game and giving it to a forward who could actually beat a defender and create chances it might be different. We were crying out for a creative midfielder in the transfer window but that did not get addressed. I’m having a hard time watching it TBH. Someone said survival is the goal and if I want entertainment go the cinema. Fuck that I want players who will get me out of my seat. I don’t want L1 football….its an awful watch but yet that is what we are playing.5
-
Total rubbish... Kamikaze holding his hand up after the first went through him started the rot. After that it just fell apart. .
We just don't have a creative midfield I think we have scored 17 home league goals, take off the 3 against Blackburn and it's grim.
Special praise to one of the worst referring displays ever. Even my pompey mates watching at home were laughing about their penalty.2
