There's anti-football, and then there's our own special brand of nuclear-deterrent-football. In my personal hell, I am made to watch an endless Charlton game that plays out like that first half.
It's criminal that we didn't sort our midfield out in the Summer, and then again in January. Our midfield is so poor it defies description. It is a non entity. It is the most offensively incapable unit since the 1940 French army.

If Lloyd Jones is out on Saturday I dread to think what Keifer Moore is going to do to us.
As for tonight? Total and utter shit. The first half was embarrassing. Zero interest in being front footed. West Brom were there for the taking and our game plan seemed to be ‘let them have the ball and punt it to no one’.
If we stay up something has to change. The midfield has to be completely overhauled. We cannot continue to play in this ‘style’ next year. We will get fuck all points and the crowds will dwindle very quickly.
A truly miserable evening and but for a hapless opposition it could have been far worse.5 -
🇰🇪 We don't lose when Collins is on watch.8

It started out being awful, improved for a time.... and is now back to being awful. So we haven't evolved at all, just gone back to the same dire experiences. I applaud the results but the method is still frankly a bit crap, as someone who prefers to actually enjoy a football match.ForeverAddickted said:

I mean, we have not evolved that much if at all. It's still Jonesball, it's still grinding out wins andong periods on the back foot, it's still not much fun at all to sit through. However it is ALSO still working, just about. I've no problem with "getting the job done" in purely pragmatic terms, if it keeps us up then mission accomplished but that doesn't mean it's not a pretty horrible experience.ForeverAddickted said:Two years ago...

Just getting the job done by any means necessary... We dont need to be impressive at this stage of the season, its not like we're going to have some late surge towards the Play-Offs, we don't need to win any plaudits - All that matters is getting points on the boards, and a few wins here and there... Whilst a good few are fixated on "how" we play, they might realise, in part, we're just replicating the needs to survive a relegation battle from a few years ago... A few even said we were basically relegated after that Lincoln draw.Oh and people even said in May 2024 that they didnt see us "evolving" under Jones...3 -
NJ persisting with a Leaburn Dykes combo is similar to him trying it with Leaburn and Ahadme last season!4
-
To be fair to the Dykes/Leaburn partnership in the first half, it wasn't their fault that the wing backs failed to deliver a decent cross all the first half. Indeed between then they delivered ONE shanked cross from Clarke.
It would have been interesting to be in the stand to see properly what was going on, on our left, as I can't remember Bell ever passing forward to Chambers. Was it effective marking, was it Chambers being too static, was it midfielders not moving enough to create another forward option? It didn't just stop our attacks, it also got us into trouble defensively, with Bell going backwards and the other defenders and keeper being put under pressure.
That great pass forward by Ramsay didn't happen because we had taken Leaburn off, it was because a player had the vision and skill to play a penetrative through ball on the deck, which could have happened any time. But rarely happens as our midfield two Docherty and Coady are stoppers.7 -
To be brutally honest, I don’t give a shit about how we play until the end of the season as long as it keeps us up. Then yes next season things have to change, but for now whatever gets us points is the football i like.26

Haven't evolved at all... Apart from the fact that the standard of opposition has improved greatly, or did you expect our performances at the end of last season to continue for the entirety of this season.thenewbie said:

We've swapped being a big fish to a team treading water5 -
So say we stay up......what's our aim for next season? 4th bottom again ? What will our budget be ? 3rd worse again ? Assuming Cardiff & Lincoln get promoted (no idea who will go up via the play offs) then I expect Lincoln's will be worse but Cardiff I imagine will be a lot better than ours & would be looking at mid table (like Stoke or Swaneea).ForeverAddickted said:Two years ago...

Unless we take it seriously next season then I don't expect it to be much different to this season. And I wouldn't think too many would accept another season of hoofball with no desire to win a game of football8 -

It wasn't pretty but seen a lot worse. Must admit I had a programme management manual to read so wasn't totally paying attention but what i saw was effort and a relaxed style at times that showed some confidence is present if not actual skill to back it up. Collins was mostly comfortable. Impressed with Fev too. We continue to struggle to 'play through the thirds' most of the time, which is disappointing.
Had expected a defeat so happy after that. Will approach Saturday the same way and hope for a similar outcome. None of our close relegation rivals have won there either. We move on.2 -
Of course it will be good to progress, but we've got to be realistic, we're a minnow at this level for now because we've been away so long... Just take Portsmouth and Oxford for example, second season at this level and still struggling.golfaddick said:

The entitlement at being back at this level is ridiculous from a good amount on here at the moment... If you cant accept grinding out results to simply stay at this level, then get back to reality and expect a fast return to League One16 -

I can see how WBA are 4th from bottom. They have had some brilliant strikers over the years, Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham (winger) and Kevin Phillips, Baggies supporters must be in disbelief at their current front line. There is a serious risk of them going down.
Really poor first half and WBA are not scoring their goal if Jones is still on the pitch. I really hope the injury is ok. Ref gave hardly feck all decisions Charlton's way first half and a soft booking for Jones before he went off.
2nd half - WBA somehow missed a sitter to go 2 up. At 1-0, I thought that apart from us looking terrible, and all over the place, we had a goal in the team. Often, if a team does not take their chances, it comes back to bite. Great finish Lyndon Dykes. My missus asked me why I was laughing, and that somehow we had scored to get back in the game. The team were all over the place at times.
Surprised that Sichenje stayed on the pitch, with a card happy referee. He got a yellow, and I could see him easily get another booking.
We rode our luck. Another point towards safety. The team is hard work to watch though. It will be incredible if the team stays up.

People saying that goal wouldn't have gone in if Jones was playing..Jones has been on the pitch when we have conceded poor goals before so I don't believe that had anything to do with it at all.8

At one point with us losing I could see a repeat of 19/20.....with Middlesbrough sending us into the bottom 3 in early March from whence we stayed until the end of the season.
Somehow we need a win from the next 2 home games. 4 points I would be ecstatic. 6 and I'll never say a bad word about NJ again !3 -
Yeah I'm usually pretty optimistic but agree.Croydon said:
I thought he was awful. Couldn't place a pass, miscontrolled and lost the ball multiple times and was caught out of position leading that dangerous counter. Very clearly a league one player being asked to make a sudden step up.YannTheMann said:Eh confused as to a lot of comments digging out Fevrier, thought he looked positive and helped us move it forward largely but game of opinions I suppose0 -

Very likely he will given Coady can’t play on Saturday against Wrexham.jakecafc said:Also, I thought Coventry had a point to prove when he came on. Should definitely be starting next game.

I’m sorry, you seem to forget that we have the 3rd worst player budget in the league. Yeah, we could play attacking, progressive football but with the quality we can afford we would get hammered every game, a bit like Southampton in the Prem last season. I find it so frustrating that our fans think we’re on an equal footing with other Championship teams. Thank god we have a manager who has a strategy to punch above our financial weight.carly burn said:A huge thank you to Lyndon Dykes for genuinely the only bit of quality football played by us the whole night.
He really got Jones out of Jail with that.
I staunchly remain in the camp that Jones hasn't a scooby on how to set up a side to attack. And I don't just mean final third action. I'm talking any sort of progressive football. The amount of times Bell for example picks the ball up and looks forward to a sea of nothing and routinely performs one of his about turns is a consistent pattern.
When we do manage to muster some form of attacking passage of play and it inevitably breaks down, the opposition consistently manage to turn it into their own attack and without fail the ball ends up back down our throats.
It's one of the reasons we never attack. He hasn't a clue on how to attack whilst keeping some form.of defensive shape.
We keep hearing these poor displays won't happen again. But yet again they continue. If we do manage to clamber our way to safety then serious questions have to be asked as to whether Jones is the man to progress us to the next level? I know I'll get lols for that but these performances are so anti football.
Im so grateful for what he achieved. I genuinely am, but I think success at this level even with bigger budgets and better players is beyond him.5 -
I struggle to understand how any Charlton fan who actually cares about the club can have watched that and said it was boring. Defensive, lacking in attacking intent and threat or real footballing craft but boring, no. I'm on the edge of my seat for 95+ minutes, living and dying with every tackle, header, blocked shot, or cross into the box - the tension makes it enthralling for me. Any neutral would probably have been bored to tears by both play off semi's and the final - to me, they were brilliant. Give me edge of the seat games that matter every day of the week over pretty passing, mid table league 1 obscurity, meaningless games - that's what i call dross. I agree with what somebody said earlier, if you want to be its entertained, go to the cinema. It's far more important than that and that's what makes it exciting ( however shit it might be !!)19

Good point but terrible spectacle in a game which looked like we were playing for a 0-0 from the KO.
I can't remember feeling so flat after an away draw ?
