I’m talking about him in Doc’s role and not Carey’s, to be clear.

I am obviously not putting him in the same bracket as Rice, don’t be obtuse. I am comparing the transition from ‘holding’ midfielder to ‘box to box’. CC and DR play a similar position, in a similar way, and people made the same criticisms of Rice that you have just made about Coventry. Arteta has given him more license to go forward and his game improved massively.

I am saying I think he has the POTENTIAL to play the Doc position, and it’s worth trying because buying a player who can run AND play with the ball in that position will cost a lot of money.
I get what you mean but not all good players cost good money. Sonny Carey didn't, we just need the CM version of him. Ebou Adams would have been great, I don't know why we didn't go in for him (or if we did). Galbraith went to Swansea but didn't cost anything. There are a decent bunch of Championship midfielders out of contract in the summer like Dozzell, De Norre, Doyle, Slater, Baker, etc.. And then there's always the chance Phil Chapple pulls the next Pirlo out of Poland.
I was surprised we didn’t go after Adams, but after Millwall Jones said he wanted a midfielder who could control the game hence the links to Sam Field. That must’ve been his priority. I don’t think Derby were bothered to see him leave, so it may just be that he’s in a rich vein of form… but he strikes me as a Jones player.

Well, of course you’re right and some (most) of our best signings have been frees. However it’s not just the fees, I don’t know what those players would demand in wages. Often times more than maybe warranted given there’s no fee attached and the high demand.

There’s not one midfielder on that list we could attract cause they’re all regular starters at better clubs except Dozzell but he’s apparently not great. Our best chance is to go to top championship sides like your Ipswich’s Southampton’s and take players that are massively out of favour but would work for us. Seen it with Bree, Clarke, Coady, Dykes, even top prem prospects like Chambers who may be getting a little old and may want to be cashed in on. Id be knocking down the door for Marc Leonard from brum personally

Couple of million I believe in the end? Think the rumours were we offered £1m+ add-ons.

It’s 1.5M with some add ons. We had an offer accepted but Galbraith didn’t want to join us because of our style of play which is very ironic because Swansea played the exact same style of play as us before they sacked Sheehan and if they didn’t have Galbraith and we did we’d be above them

I'm not sure what attributes Coventry has that would allow him to play higher. He is almost perfect positionally and solid in the tackle. What he can't do is progress the ball, play on the half-turn or ball carry.
Yeah - clarified I meant Doc’s role above, poorly worded first post. I actually think some of those attributes are being restricted in his current role. I don’t think he’s asked to risk playing progressively as we don’t build through the lines. Don’t see why Jones would want him carrying the ball regularly as he’s often picking it up from the CBs.

I feel like when he does get forward he has good close interplay with others, is able to move the ball quickly and is better carrying the ball than he gets credit for. I’m not saying he will 100% be better in that position, but wouldn’t mind seeing it.
Not sure if he is being asked to play so conservatively because Coady has been showing some nice passing range in the same role. But would Cov be any worse on the ball than Doch in that position? Probably not...!

What does that have to do with Conor Coady? Have they swapped bodies?

Don't mind his experience in a scrappy team to get us over the line til the end of the season, but surely we can't retain him after. He looks shot as a professional; he can barely move.

He can move his pointing arm well enough.
  • Can't play on Saturday as it's against his parent club, so i assume Coventry will play.

Might not be a bad thing anyway because after not playing for 4 months he's been thrown in and played 6 games in just over 3 weeks, so i think he could probably do with a rest.

Great chance for Coventry to win his place back. Wonder if we’ll then see Gough or Mitchell on the bench as cover.

Could Coady slot back into defence if Jones is out for a prolonged period?

Guessing we may go with the CB we just spent 1.7M pound on

I like Coady in the defensive midfield role, think it’s been an a key part in the upturn since the Millwall debacle. Would be wary about his mobility (or lack thereof) in defence though.
