if we stay up, I think the midfield has to be the prority. The strikers are hard to judge when they get no service.
Should have been addressed in January. It’s been an open sore ever since Nathan Jones took over but he won’t look at it for some bizarre reason. Crying out for someone that tries to control the game.
    Because he doesn’t value it.
We won’t get away (if we do) of setting up like we currently do again next season. Three relegation slots this season with Wednesday relegated months ago. A poor Oxford and I think a few surprise teams struggling. Next year’s Championship will be a much tougher proposition. Setting up every week to keep a po8nt and nick something will eventually relegate us.
Not sure I agree.  Both the promoted clubs last season currently sit in around the play offs.  Cardiff, Lincoln + ? won't be anywhere near that.  We will have a season of experience (and cash).  Lloyd Jones is not top of the EFL fantasy leagues for defenders for no reason and our clean sheet record speaks for itself.

Also nothing to say there is not +1 team with a points deduction.

Am I the only one who thought Ramsay's pass was meant for Fev but he over hit it? Not that it bothers me I'm the slightest of course 😂
I thought the best thing about the whole move was Fev ducking out the way.  If he meant to do that as he knew it would go through to Dykes, even better than the pass.

Think people are massively overestimating what’s needed to get us to mid table and beyond.

We are 7 points off 12th and 14 points off 6th.

If we can get a couple of extra wins and draws in each new season, it will mean continued progress.

That only takes 2-3 quality signings each summer to see such improvement over the course of a 46 game season.
I agree - the standard of this division is not as good as many would have you believe.

Sorry, not had time to read all the posts. What was the ‘big issue before the game’ that NJ references that might have affected our performance?

Changing the subject…..does anyone know how far it was and how long it took for the team to walk to the stadium?
We know they arrived 30 minutes late and that the team coach was held up in heavy traffic.

    Say what you see:

What I saw was a terrible low standard of football where WBA were bereft of confidence and didn't know how to win despite having a few players who were good on the ball.

I saw Charlton have two attacks with skill which resulted in Carey getting a shot on target in the 1st half and Ramsay pushing forward and hitting a sweet pass with a good duck assist by Fevrier ! with Dykes finishing with aplomb.

The irony is both Dykes and Leaburn can play on the ground but they consistently get balls in the air punted from the back where they get clattered but refs give decisions the other way !

I really thought Apter, Kelman and Knibbs were going to play a big part this season and I'm struggling with this style where you don't attack a team low on confidence.

Am I/we wrong to want to see our Championship team capable of making some passes on the ground?  We can do it but choose Option A: the punt aimed in the air which has a low percentage of success.

No surprise we are the lowest scorers away from home in the 2nd tier.

It was a point but it could've been so much more with a positive attitude by Nathan.
Yes, you are wrong. You should be thankful for small mercies & tip your hat to NJ for getting us to the Promised Land (aka The Championship). You need to forget the halcyon days of the 80's & 90's when Brian Clough was a manager & dictated that football should he played on grass. Today's football is all about the low block, false 10's and inverted wingers.

Come and join me on the naughty step for daring to want your football to be exciting and for your team to score twice in a match.
I don't disagree with you about modern football but a ground out point away at wba whilst in a relegation battle had me thoroughly entertained (i know the football was very basic). Never seen anything at the theatre or circus anywhere near it and its been a while at the cinema - if i was offered tickets to watch prime barcelona play prime liverpool at wembley, i couldn't be bothered to go coz i don';t care who wins. It's the tension, the competition, the battle - that's what i love about sport and the style is a long way down after that - i don't want to play against anybody at any of the sports i play that isn't trying absolutely everything to beat me. It would bore me to death. Each to their own.

Looked second best against one of the worse teams in the league. The performances are not good enough
Whilst days before we eeked out a draw against a team that cost £70m and have lost just the once in six... But Im sure we'll be facing Bromley next season, given we've been told by a few on here that we're going to drop into the bottom three aaaaany minute now
It was an awful performance and not even the worst in the past month. Surely you can see this is a downwards trend we’ve tailed off massively when it matters most
This is the business end of the season and all teams have had a chance to see what we were doing and stop that - they also up their games and our confidence will naturally not be as high. The good start gave us a cushion. A good summer transfer window will give us a chance to progress and the january window just gone has given us a chance to survive to get to it.

Imagine the meltdown on here if we had lost!?

It’s been a bloody stressful watch this season and the match threads can be Charlton Bipolar Life at times, but we all love it.

We chose this team, certainly not for the entertainment level.

    Just bloody stay up!

Very despondent during the match as my posts on the match thread show. However in retrospect we rode our luck and scraped the point we needed.

Hope we can find a win somewhere and somehow.
Just about sums up my opinion of the game, betas an armchair fan these days, you do get a different perspective of the game on TV. Before the season I expected to be in the position between 13-19, the fact we started so well, and had then likes of Jones, Ramsey, and the return of Leaburn, and the addition of other players, I thought and expected a possible top 10mplace, I do n to now?.

We seem to have the ability to play at the level of the teams in front of us, especially the lower teams.
There are no. easy teams in this league, as many people have previously mentioned, but I thought we had more about us than we demonstrated last night.Concerned that Jones will be out for a few games, and he is such an important player for us, os lets hope the player gets back in the team as soon as possible.

As Len posted thought we scrapped  a  draw,

  • Can’t really ever remember reading so many opposition fans say the same    ‘worst team seen here all season’   Comment. Just shows how turgid we really were

Yeah we are pretty turgid but tbh it's not like the opposition are up there with the Brazil 1970 team. They really aren't much better than us.. Any of them.
  • Awful watch, my wife asked why I was so quite and was it nerves. I replied no, it's just so bad I can't even be bothered to shout at the TV. Last night we were out played and should have lost to a team that couldn't buy a point and sacked their manager minutes later.

I love our Charlton but under Jones I hate watching us play. Didn't Clough say something like if football was supposed to be played in the air then there would be grass in the sky. that's what watching us feels like just smashing 50 yard balls into the air hoping a big lump can flick it on, we never string 3 passes together in the opposing half.

I said in the window we needed a midfielder who could connect defence to attack and give us something different and I'll stand by that, we are so one dimensional and hopelessly devoid of any creativity.

Luckily this team has an abundance on character and guts, I still think we'll be ok, but it's going to be a drawn out, painfully slow, nerve shredding process.

Have to beat Oxford & Wednesday (not a foregone conclusion) and hope to pick up a couple of draws at Preston and the like. I'm calling Saturday now... a 4-0 defeat, they are flying.

Get us safe NJ, walk away with our respect and a job well done and step aside for someone who can coach attacking football and not just defensive organisation. I can't handle it any more.
  • It's worked previously when I have asked in post match threads about loyalty points being added so I shall try again;

I haven't had my points added for Saints yet or WBA last night. Has anyone had theirs put on yet? Last time I asked mine appeared within about 20 mins so I am hoping this has the same effect.
The whole system ( if there is one !) has not been explained with any clarity as far as I'm aware .

TBH, it would appear to be a lottery these days.

I'm certain I'm not the first to ask for it to be addressed in the ticketting link on the OS ie just how it works so that all concerned will have the same guidelines & should be able to check their points' accounts accordingly.

Is that too much to ask ?

I would imagine the loyalty points will be added sometime after the final phase has been completed for the Oxford away tickets which is tomorrow [Thursday].

Thanks Clive and Fanny for replying. Makes sense that they'll be added once Oxford is sorted. Let's hope that's the case.

WBA are undoubtedly one of the worst teams in the division, there's no argument there and it is frustrating we couldn't beat them or play more aggressively but some context about their squad is needed. Trasnfermarkt values their squad at €68.53m and ours at €29.05m. That, of course, means they have some players capable of playing better than the team performances suggest. I think their two best performers last night were Campbell and Johnston. Campbell was a genuine bargain, he cost about €1.3m last summer. That is still more than we spent on a defender in that window, Sichenje has cost more. If you include loan fees, Johnston has got WBA a total of €4.7m which is more than we have spent on any single player this season and probably for a decade. He's also played a decent number of games for Celtic, European football and nearly 100 Championship games and is 26. We don't really have players of that age, with that pedigree. The 26 yr olds in our squad are Knibbs and JRC.

Was our football turgid and uninspiring? Of course it was. Should we be regularly beating teams with squad value over double ours? Of course not
When they’re as bad as WBA, it would be nice if we actually made an attempt.

So I agree with most people on here. It wasn't a pleasant watch.

I thought Fev came on and done well, couple of wayward passes but tried to drive forward. Campbell not so much. Both lads need to at Johnston, that is a proper winger.

Think Kelman should start with Dykes against Wrexham. Kelman will play off flicks etc

That's if we start with the same system, I'd rather start with wingers with Bell at LB and Clarke at RB and give Chambers a break especially if he is close to breaking down as we haven't got a natural replacement at wing back. Hopefully Jones is fit.

Personally feel we need to be putting Fullah on the bench as a direct replacement for Carey, like for like. Doc Infront of defence (Coady role) with Cov and Carey in front and just try to be slightly more positive. You haven't gotta go hell for leather but play it forward and play it quicker.

We’re drawing games that we could be losing, that’s why we’re doing better than the teams below us. That’s what will keep us up. I’m sure NJ has got a plan for next season, he’s referenced it a few times. All good stuff to come!

Am I missing something here but what was the massive disruption before the game that he mentioned on a couple of occasions?
They were late getting to the ground and I think they had to walk the final part of the journey.
Hey what ????? That is just awful, I can't imagine how they must of felt having to walk a few hundred yards to the ground & let's not forget they then had to play a game of football !!! I hope they really get the help that they desperately need after such an ordeal.
About 10 minutes, so more than a few hundred yards which eats into their preparation time, which includes mental preparation.

We could also be drawing games we should be winning.  I think we’ll just have enough to stay up, but we will only know if we’ve done enough come end of the season.

We’ve got 12 games left and need to find 3 wins.  You would assume we can get a win against Wednesday, but on last night’s showing, I don’t see hint of an attacking threat so I wouldn’t say for certain we can beat them or anyone.

Our home record is decent, but who’s to say we go on a little run of defeats now and all of sudden they become more pressurized.

Big changes needed if we stay up this year

2 wins may well do it, as you would expect to get a few draws thrown in as well.

done my 1st solo away game, managed to carry out a site visit in Coventry to coincide with a 7am start in banbury this morning, stayed at the west brom travelodge v much budget hotel, got a cab to the vine for 6pm had a couple of pints in there then walked to the ground with a couple of guys i know from charlton along the tram line, got in the ground had a quick pint before and then on to the match, we were awful massively got away with one there, one thing i do think helped was how angry there fans are on every negative thing they done, post match got a mcdonalds and waited for the crowds to die down before an uber to hotel and was back by 10.30 fair play to those that do midweek aways outside the m25 but probably not for me again unless easy.

Dreadful performance, if it wasn't for the vlogs and it being a survival season (me feeling it's important for us to be there to make a difference) I would be picking and choosing my games to watch.

    Absolutely horrendous to watch.

Irrespective of if we stay up or not (still don't think it's anywhere near over, when it already could be) we need open chest surgery.

Need new forwards, midfielders and some new defenders, probably a new keeper as well.

We are extremely fortunate Wednesday are in a crisis and Oxford United are dreadful which likely leaves one slot.

I'll be happy if we manage to stay up, but we can't do this again next season, or we are down.
