Under the current laws, whichever captain wins the toss can choose which end to attack, or if they wish to take the kick-off. If they choose to take the kick-off, then the loser of the toss would choose which end to attack.
We took the kick off in the first half, which means Birmingham won the toss, and had the choice of which end to attack. I can't imagine we'd win the toss and be desperate to take the first half kick off.

Enjoyed the performance as much as anything. Early season performance. Not long ball, solid defensively and actually played our part in a pretty entertaining game.
whatever it takes to keep Clarke at the club we have to do. Very unusual to be as committed as he is as a loanee. exceptional.
it was really important to keep the gap between us and the bottom three and we’ve done that and extended it. I reckon one more win and we’re done. Before the game I said for the next three games we need four points and have three of them after today was what I wanted. it takes the pressure off for Middlesbrough (i’d be Fairlysurprised if we get anything up there )and probably allows us to go to a somewhat resurgent Oxford and try to be stodgy and get a draw.16 -
V hard to pick a MoM. All put in a real shift.Defence imperious - we basically made the penalty area a no go zone (they had 8 attacking touches in the box v 21 for us). Interesting again to see the defence applauding Mannion - almost the promotion band back together, just with a Bell upgrade on Macca.I wore my Che Hales t shirt and Charlie took the bait.Tottenham away, ole ole7

Priske should have had a second yellow. After shoulder barging Jones and getting a yellow he did exactly the same thing later in the match!Pelling1993 said:Brum can't surely be that bad every week. Ducksch & Priske are absolute donkeys. I swear people raved about Klarer too, he's a lump of a defender that just relies on grappling and getting away with it.
Paik & Iwata spend more time on the deck crying than playing it seems too.
Great day and a real relief that we are so nearly there.4 -

Rodwell manages the team. Nathan Jones is just a front man for him.fenaddick said:Dykes clearly loved that but what on earth is Rodwell doing that near the dressing room

I am usully a Docherty critic, but I thought he played well today. And against Wrexham too.Talal said:
Docherty wasn't anonymous, he did his usual off the ball stuff well and played a lovely ball through to Dykes first half.hudson-son-son said:Pretty much positive all round from me beyond getting the centre midfield right. Tyreece looking much more sharp recently but so isolated when he gets teh ball at times. Carey grew into the game a bit but Doherty completely anonymous. Need one of them to join up more with the front 2.
If our defence is more like this and how they were early in the season though - all concerns of going down feel like they can be relaxed a bit now...8 -
Is there some injunction against him? Why shouldn't he be there congratulating players. What are you on about?fenaddick said:Dykes clearly loved that but what on earth is Rodwell doing that near the dressing room

Bit smashed but on a high still totally agree with all this build a better team, kelman is a deadly finisher imo and growing just needs the right players around him same as leaburn same as Campbell they are young and need to be given faith,I like Clarke tidy and gets up and down not convinced with chambers though seems to me lacks pace a few times he could have run with it but checks back maybe could be worked on but I would be happy with Edwards back and him as cover if possible.The defence are solid AF schijenje is good competition get rid of Gilly bukre etc and get in another top central defender and 2-3 midfielders have Carey/Coventry as back ups well more Coventry as back up and we will be alright, maybe get in a silky game changing winger/forward and we are talking.Laddick01 said:Charlie Kelman scores goals.
Build around him and Leaburn next year and you have your front two. We just need to work out how to provide more for him.
Kayne Ramsay was painful both games against Millwall. These last few performances have more than paid back those lapses. Back to his very best.
Lloyd Jones continues to be a very top end Championship CB, Bell too.
I really like Clarke. Think he’d be such a good summer addition. Chambers fairly tidy on the ball at times, but can’t see him replacing a fit Edwards.
Much better from Coventry too. I think with someone alongside him that can play more and do Docs work he’d have more space to operate.
A massive win. Takes a lot of pressure off a tough Boro trip, and means anything but a loss to Oxford is good.
Credit to Jones. When his players are fit he gets results. Very happy with that.

He scored "a couple of goals" against Blackburn on 4th Jan and then started the next 2 games.Fortune 82nd Minute said:

Birmingham offered next to nothing today and were there for the taking. For much of the game it didn't look like we could take advantage until a real strikers finish from Kelman. How ironic that I had liked a "what is the point of Charlie Kelman post earlier"!
I hope NJ doesn't do to Kelman what he did before - as soon as he scored a couple of goals he dropped him! We need goals and if his confidence is up after today keep him in the team.
And how lovely to see Mannion coming and taking some dangerous crosses. It just takes huge pressure off the defence. I hope he stays in for the rest of the season.
Kelman has been in every matchday squad since the Oxford game.
So he wasn't dropped "as soon as he scored" those goals.
You're welcome.1 -
It’s tricky with Kelman. I don’t think there’s any issue with attitude or effort, but he has struggled to have much influence in games when he hasn’t scored. However, the boy can clearly finish and it’s not entirely on him that he hasn’t been provided with a ton of chances. With our biggest issue being scoring goals, it feels like we need to get him in the side for moments like that today because, apart from maybe Godden or Carey, I’m not sure anyone else would’ve finished that chance b cause it needed both composure and an ability to generate power on the shot without much back lift.
The trouble is, taking TC out of the side can also make us very one paced and we lack players who can carry the ball up the pitch.
Hopefully we can add some quality in the summer that means we’re less reliant on one or two players to provide those sparks.Overall, though, I like Kelman and think he could well kick on next season with the right partner and setup.15 -
On the commentary Terry said that we kicked off and therefore he assumed Birmingham must have won the toss and made the decision on which end to kick towards.follett said:Not that it matters but apparently it was us that won the toss and chose to kick towards the covered end first half2 -
Kelman doesn’t suit our brand of kick and rush football .Exiled_Addick said:It’s tricky with Kelman. It is interesting looking at the team that started yesterday’s win and seeing a relatively similar spine when compared to the play off final / team that ended last season… Mannion, Ramsay, Jones, Coventry, Docherty, TC
Otherwise
Gillesphey -> Bell
Small -> Clarke
Edwards -> Chambers
Berry -> Carey
Godden -> Dykes4 -
Was only half paying attention, but pretty sure we kicked off, so this can’t be correct. Brum must have turned us round.LargeAddick said:2 -
It was my reference to the WBA and Pompey performances. They were so bad I equated it to living behind the iron curtain during the Cold War and branded it communist football, setting us up ultra hard to break but not a clue going forward. Thankfully the last two performances have been much better, and the 3 points y’day mean that at Boro, we can go back to that really dour type of football if need be.wolfgang said:
What does that mean?cabbles said:peak communist footballHopefully we will try to have a go when we get on the ball, but I fully expect the same approach as WBA.
The Oxford game however, we should definitely be looking to try and be more progressive with the ball. It’s a game against a relegation rival and although first and foremost I imagine we’ll play not to get beat, I absolutely don’t want a repeat of WBA5 -
Double bluff on Birmingham, stop them kicking towards their own fans second half, anyway it worked 🤷♂️LargeAddick said:2 -
Not that I care ... but, Birmingham turned up with some attitude today.
Turning round the KO, taking an age on every dead ball situation, feigning injury.
I often look at other teams with envy at the talent at their disposal, but if they can't add a bit of 'Charlton' heart and soul to that, it ain't worth a light.10 -
All played well and we deserved the win.
I thought Carey had one of his best all-round performances of the season as he played well defensively. Still got some shots off like he usually does and played some good passes at the right time too.6 -

I don’t think this could have been the case seeing as we had kick off too? We wouldn’t have chosen ends and had kick off had we won the toss.LargeAddick said:3 -
Super start to March, so let's march on up the table .. great to see Kelman scoring, I had lost all faith in him
Mostly, thank the Lord for Jones, Ramsay and Bell, one of the best defence trios in the division
Lastly, I don't hold out too much hope that we can sign Harry Clarke on a permanent deal in the summer. He is one of the best loanees we have ever had and if he costs a lot and wants to join us, please splash the cash2 -
Over the moon with that. Could have gone either way. Passing was poor but no one can fault the players commitment to the cause. I have been critical of Kelman as have most of us probably; we all hope he improves and comes good.0

Really pleased with yesterday's performance which I think has been a little under-appreciated by some, perhaps because we only scored one goal.
Birmingham desperately needed a win to keep them in play-off contention, but at no time did we let them get a grip on the game. I thought our midfield, so often toothless, increasingly stifled them as the game went on. We hunted in packs which is something we don't do very often.
From Mannion to the four who shaed striking duties it was a really good team performance, Mannion impressed with his handling and didstribution, but didn't have a shot to save that I can remember, and in front of him Ramsay and Jones in particular were superb. Bell is always good, and looks so calm on the ball, Champers solves our wing back back problem, and will improve. Clarke had his best game for us I think, but again should probably have scored. His first touch was a little heavy, maning defender had time to get close enough to block.
Weeks is always involved and did well, and Leaburn offered a different challenge when he came on, and had a good chance to make the game safe. TC was getting loads of stick in the first twenty minutes, bacuse he seems to take breathers at times. But perhaps that's his style. Lull defenders into a false sense of security, and then explode into life. You could tell they hate it when he gets on the ball.
Great finish from Kelman. He needed that!
So we've played really well in consecutive games, and I think we can give Middlesbrough a game.

He’s just the sort of signing we should be making for next season. Much will rely on where Ipswich find themselves next season I think. It could be that they are prepared to loan him out again if no acceptable bids come in.Lincsaddick said:Super start to March, so let's march on up the table .. great to see Kelman scoring, I had lost all faith in him

I thought Clarke's contract was up this year, although Ipswich might have a year option on it. Tbh if they get promoted I don't see why they'd exercise the option. I think he fits our system well but not really McKenna's, and I'd imagine they'd be looking to upgrade that spot if they are promoted.5

His contract expires in the summer so it’s not up to Ipswich the decide. Obv he might get better offers elsewhere that we don’t / can’t match.ShootersHillGuru said:
