Middlesbrough vs. Charlton Athletic
Wednesday 11th March 2026 - 7:45pm Kick-Off
Referee: Adam Herczeg
Introduction
Charlton leave the comfort of South East London this coming Wednesday evening having recorded a vital victory over mid-table Birmingham City on Saturday. We make the long journey to the North East of England with title chasing: Middlesbrough awaiting our arrival.
The Opposition
Name: Middlesbrough (2nd) - Manager: Kim Hellberg
Ground: Riverside Stadium
Previous League Result: QPR 0-4 Middlesbrough
Things could have gone disastrously wrong for the hosts earlier on in the season when Manager; Rob Edwards decided to return to Wolverhampton Wanderers after just a short spell in charge at the Riverside... Steve Gibson though has long had to make important decisions in the North East, having spent 32-years at the helm, and opted to hire Swede: Kim Hellberg as Edwards replacement.
It was just three games into Hellberg's reign, that they made the trip down to the Valley, recording what was a pretty comfortable 2-1 win, an own goal that evening from George Edmundson briefly made things interesting, but 'Boro hung on for a deserved three points that night... That result saw Middlesbrough stay second, and saw them climb to within five points off leaders: Coventry City... Fast forward 16-games and they still sit in second place... Five points off leaders; Coventry City.
Things haven't been straightforward for Hellberg though. There was a period right at the end of 2025 where they picked up just a solitary point in four games, and recently picked up just two points in three games, those draws coming against fellow relegation battlers and with both those results coming at the Riverside, this won't again be the foregone conclusion that some might expect.
Our record at the Riverside is the concern though, we've not won there since 2005, a 3-0 win courtesy of goals from Rommedahl, Bent and Perry. Whilst Middlesbrough have completed the double against us on three of the last six years we've been in the same Division.
At least we've not slapped an Operation on this fixture!!
Charlton Team News
All eyes will of course be on stalwart Centre-Back: Lloyd Jones who'll go into this final game looking to avoid a two match ban, the Defender who'll surely run away with the Player of the Year award, was put to the test with some robust battles with the Birmingham front line, but came out of the game in a manner that you've come to expect from a player that was picked up from Cambridge United on a Free Transfer... and he's been worth every penny!!
Given the nine point lead we now have over 22nd, we may see Lloyd rested for this game, especially with an early kick-off against relegation threatened Oxford United on Saturday - However do we really expect that to be the case? - What we might see is Conor Coady returning to the starting eleven, as we go for a more defensive approach. Wilst Thomas Kaminski may be fit enough to return to the team once more as well, to drop Will Mannion who performed admirably given his lack of game time... that would be harsh!!
Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Bell
Clarke - Coady - Docherty - Chambers
Carey
Dykes - Kelman
Substitutes: Kaminski - Gillesphey - Gough - Fevrier - Costello - Fullah - Campbell - Leaburn - Coventry

Think we might see Chambers rested which will mean someone at LWB who shouldn't be at LWB.
A local reporter on 5 Live on Sunday said that Middlesbrough struggle against a low block but thrive against teams that try to play aggressively. That's exactly how they picked us apart at The Valley. I think we might see Coady come back in to solidify the defensive structure and a return to punting the ball up the pitch. It won't be pretty but we will be on stifling job9 -
It’s ridiculous to expect us to travel to the longest away trips on a Wednesday then give us 12.30 ko on Saturday … I would leave Jones out tomorrow same with Bell … Saturday much more important fixture for us .. so rest key players .Like to see Leaburn and Kelman given a long run up top with next season in mind .. a point our only hope Wednesday but we must put the Oxford fixture first ..16

Great preview as always.
While I'd rather Boro weren't coming into this off the back of a confidence boosting 4-0 demolition of QPR, other teams have shown you can get a result there and I definitely wouldn't rule out us taking something back to London with us.
Given the importance of Oxford on Saturday I don't hate the idea of some rotation where needed, but not sure there will be a huge amount.
I reckon we follow the recent away scripts and take a 1-1 draw3 -
This is a free hit for us, and I doubt we will get anything other than a thorough spanking. For that reason, I would rest a number of players with Saturday in mind -
Mannion
Clarke Ramsey Gough Bell Chambers
Coady Rankin-Costello
Fullah
Leaburn Kelman
Subs: Kaminski (if fit, Brookes if not); Jones, Gillesphey, Carey, Coventry, Fevrier, Docherty, Campbell, Dykes.3 -
Think we have to rest Jones, and focus on the more winable games like Oxford, play both the C's in central Mid and Leaburn and Dykes up top. Park the bus time. 0-0 ideally, more realistically boro win 3-0.0
-
I don't think it is in N Jones' nature to punt on a match. However, if ever there was a fixture to rest players for it would be this one.
I think we will go full strength with some changes at HT or the hour mark depending on the game state. I can't see Bell and Chambers both sitting out as I don't know what we would do at LCB/LWB; I don't think anyone wants to see a Gillesphey and Campbell reunion. I would stick with the midfield three from the weekend as I think we will need mobility to combat Boro's slick passing. I'd continue with TC up top to provide a threat on the counter.
We will set up to frustrate and may have to ride our luck at times. If we can put in a similar performance to Southampton away then we have every chance of taking a point, Oxford and Leicester have recently shown it's doable. I would go unchanged (!), but appreciate this may be a risk with Saturday in mind.
Mannion
Ramsay Jones Bell
Clarke Coventry Docherty Chambers
Carey
Dykes Campbell

Four years ago Coady played CB for England, so surely he can take Lloyd's place so Jones doesn't get booked in this match and misses the important Oxford away and Norwich at home.
After Barnsley pulled 5 points back on CAFC back in the COVID season with just 3 games to go we really need to make sure Jones is available in the mini league matches near the bottom.13 -
No such thing as a free hit!! 10 games to go try and win as many as possible, we have a habit of losing the winnable games, so the saving players theory doesn’t work.Pedro45 said:This is a free hit for us, and I doubt we will get anything other than a thorough spanking. A point will be a decent one against a very good Boro side

Can see this being a tight one (as the actress said to the bishop)...😉
But at the same time we are more than capable of coming home with a point, so I'm going for a 1-1, whilst 🙏 for a 0-12 -
1-2 win for the travelling Addicks to send the spanners into ecstasy5
-
I don’t think 2 strikers will be the plan here, I think it will be a similar set up to the Southampton game with TC dropping back so that we can defend in a 5-4-1
Mannion
Ramsay Jones Bell
Clarke Docherty Coady Chambers
Carey TC
Dykes
Coventry has struggled with 3 game weeks in the past so I expect Coady to come in for a game where being organised and in the right place is going to be very important. Leaburn and Kelman to impact from the bench if we go behind

Free hit?
Swing and a miss, comprehensively bowled through the gate, wicket-keeper impaled on a flying middle stump.
Comfortable home win, 4-0
Not-so-Happy Valley.2 -
Boro’ are a really good side, but it could be argued that they caught us at the perfect time at the valley, what with injuries/form at the time. I think we will show up and make it difficult for them. Might see Coady back and stick to Hackney like glue. Hopefully plenty of we are gonna get pumped posts, because when that happens we get a result!!😜1

Probably more relevant than 4 years ago is that 6 months ago he played centre back in the championship and was absolutely terrible. If we do rest Jones (we absolutely shouldn’t) then Gillesphey will play theresoapboxsam said:Four years ago Coady played CB for England, so surely he can take Lloyd's place so Jones doesn't get booked in this match and misses the important Oxford away and Norwich at home.

This.Defo give jones the week off.Probably wont as would "undermine the integrity of the league"RonnieMoore said:It’s ridiculous to expect us to travel to the longest away trips on a Wednesday then give us 12.30 ko on Saturday … I would leave Jones out tomorrow same with Bell … Saturday much more important fixture for us .. so rest key players .Like to see Leaburn and Kelman given a long run up top with next season in mind .. a point our only hope Wednesday but we must put the Oxford fixture first ..0 -
Need to keep some momentum going and not be too defeatist before a ball is even kicked. Go in with strongest team and aim for points, same a usual. Build winning in to a habit or we remain inconsistent and liable to relegation jitters. That said i think Boro will ease off at 4, so 0-4, or 4-4 if it's a good night.0

It's ultra important Jones doesn't get a yellow, maybe due to a picky ref, who knows, so could see Nathan opting to leave him out Wednesday, imagine the furore if this happened and he missed the next two games...1

Must win game.10

Not having this free hit lark. Does my head in.
Every point is valuable!! And whilst I don't expect a win, we shouldn't just roll over. A draw tomorrow and win at Oxford would be ideal.
Won't be a pleasant watch as it will be backs against the wall for 90 minutes. I think Campbell may stay in the team for counter attacking purposes.
Boro 2 - CAFC 0

Great preview as always FA
As our big Kenyan will be missing and Jones possibly being rested i can't see us coming away with any points .
But I don't think we will get hammered either so probably 2 nil to Middlesbrough.
Hopefully we don't pick up any more injuries and we get a positive result at Oxford.
I don't like using the expression of a free hit as every game is worth exactly the same number of points, but in this instance I think it's appropriate.
Good luck and happy travels to all who are making the long midweek trip, hopefully you will be rewarded.
Head says 2 nil Middlesbrough
Heart says 1 1.0 -
- Middlesbrough have lost just one of their last 13 league games against Charlton (W10 D2), winning the last three in a row.
- Charlton have won just one of their last 17 away league games against Middlesbrough (D6 L10), and are winless in six visits since a 3-0 win in August 2005.
- Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their last five home league games (W3 D2), conceding just one goal in that run.
- Charlton have won just one of their last 12 away league games (D5 L6), beating Leicester 2-0 at the end of January.
- Middlesbrough’s Morgan Whittaker has scored in each of his last three league games against Charlton, though all of these have come away from home.

Whatever the result you wanna avoid Lloyd getting a card.5

We've taken points off Coventry, Ipswich, Hull and Southampton, to name a few. Absolutely no reason to think it's beyond us to get something out of this10
-
you just know we are gonna nick something here to help the Spanners out7

If Oxford and Leicester can pick up points against Boro, so can we.10

So what. That's of secondary importance.Elthamaddick said:you just know we are gonna nick something here to help the Spanners out
If we "nick" something I'll be made up, because it's what we do for ourselves that is of primary concern4 -
I think any neutral would have this down as a cert home win and with good cause but this is Charlton and we’re a bit like Forest Gumps box of chocolates. I’m still thinking in terms of losing this but I wouldn’t be totally shocked if we squeezed out a draw. 2 - 02
