POST-MATCH THREAD: Middlesborough v Charlton Athletic: Wednesday 11th March 2026: KO 19:45
A tough away fixture to the grim northern outpost of Middlesbrough, a club currently flying high in the automatic promotion places, was always going to be a difficult ask on a midweek evening. Three changes at the back see Keenan Gough, Macauley Ghilesphey, and Conor Coady come in to relieve Kayne Ramsay, Amari’i Bell, and the at-risk-from-excessive-yellow-cards Lloyd Jones. Leaburn and Kelman up top took the place of Dykes and Campbell. The last time I made the journey up to the Riverside, the fixture was deemed the infamous “Operation”. Grim.
And this one started quickly, through the home side’s quick passing building out from the back and loading the penalty area when in attack. Two shots, one fizzed right across Will Mannion’s goal line, threatened to establish Middlesbrough’s dominance immediately. But it wasn’t all Middlesbrough. Charlton played some very good counter-attacking football. Sonny Carey was clever in buying a foul that resulted in a free kick from eighteen yards and Miles Leaburn and Charlie Kelman a number of times to keep the pressure on the home side in the first ten minutes. I thought our passing and movement was surprisingly good.
Just under fifteen minutes had elapsed when Middlesbrough carved us open easily and whipped a shot in that was ultimately wide. A warning shot of what the home side were capable of. Mannion’s first save came some minutes later when a good break forward resulted in a shot straight down the Addick’s keepers throat, which he saved comfortably.
Not too long after, the Addicks turned defence into attack, with Luke Chambers fed Sonny Carey breaking forward into space to find Charlie Kelman on the edge of the box. He lined up the ball on his right before electing to attack with his left, his shot being deflected away for a corner. Then, Charlton had their best chance through a break down the right. Harry Clarke raced forward and flashed a cross into the middle that found Kelman at the back post. His left shot was brilliantly saved by Brynn throwing his body across goal and turned away for a corner. It was the clearest opportunity of the match to that point, foiled only by a very good keeper.
Middlesbrough’s clearest opportunity came right after. Some cute play carved the Addicks’ open again, but the resulting shot was tipped onto the crossbar by a leaping Will Mannion and the danger was soon after averted.
The Addicks saw out the first half without conceding. The makeshift backline was largely effective in containing the considerable Middlesbrough threat. More than that, though, we had are moments on the counter. The forwards weren’t isolated, they worked hard to get behind the ball when needed and, with Sonny Carey, were the sharp tip of the sword on the counter. And we had our chances. If not for a very, very good save we would’ve been a goal up.
The challenge of the second half was to keep the discipline of the first going. A point of more would be more than welcomed by the visitors, whereas the home side needed and, perhaps expected, nothing short of a win to remain competitive at the top. How long could the Addicks’ keep them at bay, increasing their frustrations, and take advantage of their desperation?
Almost immediately a careless foul gave the home side a free kick, which resulted in a near miss, poked wide at the far post. Not long after, another free kick in generally the same spot came to nothing. Groans could now be heard across the RIverside as the home side’s possession failed to deliver a meaningful advantage.
Middlesbrough had some 74% of possession at that stage, when on 57 minutes both sides made multiple changes. Gough was off for Ramsay. Leaburn off for Dykes and Kelman off for Campbell. With a throw in to come from the restart, Harry Clarke’s long throw cut through the box and Conor Coady got his leg across the defender to direct the ball past the hapless keeper and into the back of the net!
Middlesbrough then amped up their efforts in front of goal. At one point, some play in the box had Charlton bodies flying left and right, with even Macauley Gillesphey clearing the ball away with head whilst laying on the ground! On 64 mins Gillesphey was replaced by Amari’i Bell.
At that point the pressure that Charlton were under was immense. Everything Middlesbrough do is done quickly; fast passing, little flicks round the corner, snap shots. But it wasn’t getting them anywhere. Conversely, Charlton were frantic when they had a chance on the ball. Well disciplined in shape and throwing bodies in at every opportunity. Waves and waves of pressure ensued with little relief. Captain Greg Docherty had run himself into the ground. He was replaced with a minute of regular time by Lloyd Jones. If you wanted to know whether Will Mannion is a good shot stopper, you had an answer tonight. He pulled off comfortable saves all night, some particularly important ones in the final throes of added time.
It was a masterclass in resiliency! Blocked shots aplenty. In fact, Middlesbrough, for all of their attacking prowess, had very little on target. Next to no possession. But all the goals. Resiliency is a beautiful skill in and of itself and not to be scoffed at. Middlesbrough play some lovely football, but it came to nowt, as they say in those parts. They’ll be disappointed. We’re staying up and we’ve got more to prove.
Clean sheet win. Well done Charlton. That should make the journey home a sweet one.
Middlesbrough 0 Charlton 1
Over you.

The ‘absolutely shite’ Lyndon Dykes and Charlie Kelman are now above QPR in the table - haha.

What a performance. Like Southampton away but better.
Nathan Jones is ridiculously good at this. Saw at least three I know in the away end off the TV, what a reward for those travelling fans, and the fans could be heard throughout.
