Conor Coady Signs On Loan From Wrexham

An excellent point. Many have pointed out that few of last summer's signings have been successful, but if you look around other clubs, the success rate is rarely very high, though I fully understand 'success' is both subjective and not binary. In some cases, it is very low.Er_Be_Ab_Pl_Wo_Wo_Ch said:Coady, Clarke, Dykes - all potentially available for next season, each of them very expensive, but with each of them we know exactly what we'd be getting. Might be expensive, but much less risk than buying the best of League One. No waiting and seeing if they fit the system - we already know they do. The value for money is clear to me - safety this season and get a better foothold in the division next season. I have no idea if any of them would want to stay, let alone a deal be done, but they'll be big boots to fill.2 -
He has some record. Only been on the losing side once since he joined us and we've got 15 points from 24.
Inspirational signing.6 -

Makes more sense to give him 20k per week, than the multiple 2mil transfer fees and 10k pw for league 1 punts that might not work out.
Our summer and January business couldnt be any more different and its clear which worked better.
We'll always need to look for better players from below, but you can build a team on them0 -
Disney FC have a bit of a injury crisis at DM, seeing how well he's played for us there they might want to take another look at him for next season.
If not, the only option is a loan out (they don't seem good at shifting players) and in that case, would take him for a season as the veteran head in the camp and to come in when needed.0 -
Every team needs leaders on the pitch, even more so at the back. In the absence of Jones, Coady was brought in last night to do that job especially with a youngster like Gough in that back three.1
-
We need upgrades pretty much all over the pitch to progress but we also need a squad of players and I’d suggest Coady would be a superb addition in a few ways. Won’t play every minute but brings unbelievable experience and leadership and in this defensive midfielder role Jones has found for him I’d say having him on the bench to see games out would be a real plus.4
-
We also primarily need upgrades from the summer, not January. I think we’d all be relatively happy if we kept all the January signings (bar Fevrier) and it would still be an improvement on where we started the season. If we’d had this group the whole time I’d be willing to bet we’d be a comfortably top table sideShootersHillGuru said:We need upgrades pretty much all over the pitch to progress but we also need a squad of players and I’d suggest Coady would be a superb addition in a few ways. I thought Coady's absence of pace would find him out if we had to start him at the back.
Pleasingly not so, last night.
Partly his experience and positional nouse outweighed his immobility, that and how deep Charlton played all night, there was nowhere behind him for Boro to attack. His success last night speaks to his class. The first 2 yards is in his head.
Same goes for the goal.
I don't expect we'll see him starting at the back again unless we're blighted by more injuries - indeed the dead leg that Mannion gave him might keep him out on Saturday.
FWIW I reckon CC Snr has repaid his wages/fee/etc already. He is one gamble that's paid off.

Footballers don't need legs if they have a brain like Coady.2

We're not all of a sudden gonna dramatically change our style next season whatever people think. I'd sign all 3 loanees if we had the chanceCrispywood said:I don’t think we can talk about wanting to progress the style of football and then bringing Coady back.
His best games of the season have come against Boro and Southampton great when you plan on playing park the bus but when the games open up like we’ve seen at QPR Pompey and West Brom he’s not at his best. He’s been great for us, I’m sure he’s enjoyed it so been a good partnership and wish each other well at the end of the year3 -
Id be amazed if he was here next season. Listening to him on Cawley's substack he was very much here to give his all for a short period of time. Made reference to his family being up north and this loan allowing him to focus solely on his football. Be very surprised if he wanted to uproot his family at this stage of his career.16

His loan spell with us has proved he still has it, and isn't just a podcaster with a playing contract to keep him "relevant ". He's a lot more attractive than he was 2 months ago.AllHailTheHen said:Id be amazed if he was here next season. I'd be amazed if he couldn't get a deal with a lower northern team next season, depending on promotion and relegation, the likes of Preston, Blackburn and Bolton. And good luck to him.7 -
Wrexham probably won’t sell him for less than one million in order recoup some of their investment. Assuming a smaller transfer budget, we are not going to spend 1 million on a 5 million or so budget for someone ejo most likely would be a backup1

Wrexham are possibly the worst selling club in the world, he'll either be loaned out or have his deal terminatedBostonaddick said:Wrexham probably won’t sell him for less than one million in order recoup some of their investment. His salary is 1.3M for next year alone. Anyone willing to pay part of wages is technically giving Wrexham a fee anyway otherwise he’s collecting a wage at Wrexham doing nothingBostonaddick said:Wrexham probably won’t sell him for less than one million in order recoup some of their investment. Has been excellent in many ways since joining in the winter window but cannot see him signing permanently. NJ brought him in to make us harder to break down and to add a bit more leadership/nous on the pitch when looking more behind our shoulder than he had hoped (early season form considered).NJ will no doubt seek a strong additional alternative to Coventry in the summer but as I say, I really do not expect that to be Coady even if he has done the job NJ hoped he would do in the second half of this season very very well.1

Who would you rather have? Coady or Burke? I know i'd rather have the one that can play 90 minutes without breaking down...Crispywood said:I don’t think we can talk about wanting to progress the style of football and then bringing Coady back.

Coady is perfect for us and it's extremely likely next season will necessarily be one of further consolidation.
I think we should be looking to do a deal, but suspect the main reason it won't is his preference to stay closer to his family.

Obviously Coady but there’s no chance we find a team willing to take Burke off our handsSteveACS said:

Very true - Chris Whyte syndrome.shine166 said:Footballers don't need legs if they have a brain like Coady.2 -
Absolutely agree with this. Suspect he'll remain at this level but it will be a club closer to home.bolloxbolder said:Coady is perfect for us and it's extremely likely next season will necessarily be one of further consolidation.

Do a similar job for them than he has for us.0 -
We don’t but if you look at other promoted sides the last few years (ie Oxford, Plymouth, etc) they use the step up in revenue to invest a decent amount year one but then scale back a fair amount on transfer fees in year two. If the owners are willing to invest 10 plus million then spending 1 million on a key reserve might make sense, I just have a feeling it wont be that high next yearMendonca In Asdas said:

I see your point but they just invested nearly 2m on a project player earmarked for the summer window, that doesn’t suggest an unwillingness to spend to meBostonaddick said:

There's no chance Wrexham will be able to get 1m+ for a 33 year old they want to offload who's on 25k a week at this level. In reality it'll likely be another loan.Bostonaddick said:Wrexham probably won’t sell him for less than one million in order recoup some of their investment. The thing in Coady's favour is that this loan will have put him in the shop window at a time when many people probably felt he was done. So he will have options and i agree with the posters who think he's likely to move to a club further north near his family.
