We are the worst of the League 1 teams published so far, shows how critical promotion was really, despite us being told the plan was promotion this season into the Championship

It they're posting financials like that while operating in the swimming pool full of money that is the Premier League, relegation could be catastrophic for them.

they will recover some of the money with sale of player contracts, and brining in lower valued EFL players.
Though of course you have to have other clubs wanting your players.

How long can we defy gravity? Does this get added to national debt ? (do I mean deficit)

Football is just a horrible business model.  Lose a lot of money annually.  Maybe break even one year when you sell a good young player.  The only thing keeping the whole system afloat is that valuations upon sale have been going up but not enough to offset the accumulated annual losses.  If the number of wealthy narcissists interested in football as a five year loss making ego boost were to ever dry up,  the whole sport would collapse.
  • I confess I just don't get why anyone invests in UK football clubs? Can't see the upside? Even in the Prem? God bless our owners!

Nor me mate which is why I was so confused in the dark days of Farnell etc I just couldn’t see the con. It wasn’t as if we had a few players worth a fortune

For most owners it is about pure unbridled narcissism not profit. Either the rush of being the owner of a professional sports club or the narcicissm of believing they can be the exception to the rule and will make loads by making it to the premiere league.

The other group are the southall grifter types.  Buy a struggling club for almost nothing.  Don’t pay its financial obligations, con in a wealthy co owner, siphon out the cash. The reason it didn’t work for southall was he was too stupid to realize the wealthy co owner was skint.

For championship clubs it's kind of understandable as you're just one good season away from the promised land of the Premier league. But i'd love to know the method behind the madness at Gillingham and Port Vale losing 6m in league two. At best you'd have to say league one is the ceiling for both of those clubs so what's in that for the owners?

Cardiff losing 35m to get relegated to league one is mind blowing.
Wycombe losing 10m with average crowds of 5k in league one isn't much better. Even if they got promoted to the championship they're a tiny club who'd probably come straight back down.
