Replacement players will be allowed in county cricket in England and Wales this season and, for the first time, will cover illness and significant life events as well as injuries.

The season-long trial means players will be able to be replaced with a fully participating player for the first time, rather than just a substitute fielder as is currently the case.

The significant life events will include circumstances such as players leaving to attend the birth of their child or the illness of a family member.

Players leaving a game due to one of the above will not be allowed to return for the rest of the fixture in question.

Doesn't thin already happen with international callups mid game?

I wonder how long it will be before this is abused? E.g. a bowler being carted around the park getting a side strain or waking up with a fever, so that he can be replaced by someone else...

It does happen with internationals but this has also got to do with England players in mind. I believe that one of the things that came out of the review is that England players should be involved in more CC matches but what the ECB don't want is a bowler carrying on bowling with a niggle because the county needs him as it limits their options. Hence the subs.

It also means that counties will have to take slightly bigger squads. For example, most counties have two glove men in their side but Kent might not, previously, have travelled with both Finch and Benjamin. Add an opener, an extra couple of seamers and a spinner and we could easily see a squad of 16 going to a far-flung place like Durham - our first fixture.

Interesting first squad for the game starting tomorrow against Durham if only for the fact that Benjamin is preferred to Finch - "Chris Benjamin has been selected to take the gloves for this match over Harry Finch, who does not carry an injury".

Hard to see who will be the player to miss out along with Jas Singh. You would think Dawkins has done enough with his huge knock last week. Between Stewart & Northeast (?), in April would it be better to go with the extra batter?

    1. Compton
    2. Crawley
    3. Dawkins
    4. Northeast or Stewart (in at 8)
    5. Muyeye
    6. DBD
    7. Evison
    8. Benjamin
    9. Milnes
    10. Dudgeon
    11. Stuurman

Absolutely no way Northeast doesn’t play surely?

I assume Dawkins could play this match, but then would go back to Uni?

On form and talent picking him is a no brainer, but maybe they want to get a more settled batting order?

A very interesting call to leave out Finch. I guess they feel they can do that on a pitch where the keeper won't be keeping to spinners.

This is why I assumed Northeast would come back as captain because I’m not sure DBD makes this team on merit .

I still wouldn't be surprised if they don't leave Dawkins out and that his inclusion in the squad is a message to the more established players that he is knocking on the door. Let's also not forget what I said yesterday about subs - why not have an in-form batter in the squad just in case?  There's no way they will go in with just four bowlers either.

Northeast will be a fixture all season. As for the captaincy I think we need to go back to the Billings/Northeast fallout at the Club to understand why DBD will carry on with the job unless he really does have a nightmare of a run. The last thing that is needed is internal issues.

Would assume the team will line up as below:

    1. Compton
    2. Crawley
    3. Northeast
    4. Muyeye
    5. DBD
    6. Evison
    7. Benjamin
    8. Stewart
    9. Dudgeon
    10. Milnes
    11. Stuurman

There is absolutely no way northeast isn’t playing! If anyone deserves to be dropped after pre season form it’s DBD, almost every dismissal he had was him trapped in front of the wickets on his pads.

Agree with the above though, the 11 will without doubt be that

As strong a side as we’ve had for some time .  Wouldn’t be overly surprised to see J Singh instead of Stewart .

I have heard that Jas is bowling as well as he has ever done. Both Hollioake and Milnes have referred to him too in pre-season. Just depends if they want to lengthen the tail or not given Stewart has rescued us on any number of occasions with big innings batting at 8.

Good to have difficult team selection choices.

I hope the management make the most of this rare situation, before half our team pick up season ending injuries.

That's a very strong seam attack that they could conceivably leave James Minto out of who was very impressive at the U19 WC.

I wonder if Matt Parkinson travelled up anyway, to catch up with his brother, and have a collective moan about life as a non playing spinner!

    125-3 (28) at lunch

Great to take the three wickets but too many "four-balls" delivered too

Surrey 61-4 against Warwickshire. All England batters too - Burns, Smith, Pope and Lawrwence. The glue that is Sibley is still there on 21* off 81 balls.

7/8 teams elected to bowl but the only team that has really struggled with the bat is Surrey. Lancs chose to bat and they are 152-1
