MATCH THREAD : Sheffield Wednesday V Charlton Athletic : Saturday 18th April 2026 : KO 15:00
Good afternoon to you all…
So, here we go, it's "that" game, the one we have all been looking forward to with a mixture of hope, expectation, and trepidation in equal measures…🙄, Yep, a trip up the M1 to Hillsborough, where bottom club Sheffield Wednesday await for a match of such tremendous importance to us as again we go for that elusive three points that will help to stabilise us, and give us a better foothold for the run in. Wednesday sit rock bottom as we all know, but have taken some credible draws in their last two matches with Coventry and Leicester, so mustn't be taken lightly…we are unbeaten in our last six away fixtures, the most recent of which was a 1-1 draw with Watford, so confidence should be fine.
TEAM NEWS..Thomas Kaminski, Collins Sichenje, and Conor Coady are all available for this afternoon, Goalkeeper Murphy Cooper completed 60 minutes for the Owls' U21s last week following a muscle injury, but Di’Shon Bernard, Liam Cooper, Ernie Weaver, Gui Siqueira, and George Brown remain unavailable.
HEAD-TO-HEAD…We've clashed on 63 occasions winning 21, the Owls 26 ,and the remaining 16 fixtures resulting in draws, We ran out 2-1 victors at The Valley in October 2025 thanks to first-half goals from Sonny Carey and Reece Burke.
Tom Parsons will oversee proceedings this afternoon…
We will be sporting RED at Hillsborough…that's good, so here we go…
Team…Nathan Jones makes four changes to his side this afternoon
Reece Burke, Harry Clarke, Conor Coady and Matty Godden all return to the side. Jayden Fevrier, Joe Rankin-Costello and Tyreece Campbell move to the bench, while Kayne Ramsay misses out with a hamstring injury. There is also a return to the bench for Kenyan International Collins Sichenje.
Burke is likely to start in a back three alongside Lloyd Jones and Amari’i Bell in front of Will Mannion.
Clarke and Luke Chambers are expected to operate as wing-backs with Coady joining skipper Greg Docherty and Sonny Carey in midfield behind Godden and Lyndon Dykes.
Fevrier, Rankin-Costello, Campbell and Sichenje are joined on the bench by Thomas Kaminski, Macaulay Gillesphey, Harvey Knibbs, Miles Leaburn and Charlie Kelman.
Charlton: Mannion; Burke, Jones, Bell; Clarke, Coady, Docherty (c), Carey, Chambers; Godden, Dykes
Subs: Kaminski, Sichenje, Gillesphey, Rankin-Costello, Knibbs, Fevrier, Campbell, Leaburn, Kelman

If you include Knibbs that's 5 attackers on the bench6

No Coventry at all... Not surprised to see Fullah absent, would have thought we'd have seen Berry on the bench for experienceBurke's ability to play that long is the biggest concern from that eleven, although we have Sichenje as backup - No real pace in the team either0

what's up with Ramsey?
Surprised no Coventry0 -
No Kayne.0

Got a spare ticket if anyone needs one.0

OS says Ramsay has a hamstring injury2

I wonder how long Burke lasts before injuring himself.2

Good to see Godden starting up front with Dykes...14

Ok with that lineup, he’s gone for experience to start, makes complete sense to me. Hopefully Burke holds up and performs well.9

nice red kit1

Can understand why he'd go for more attacking subs for this one. We want to win, if Coady got injured you'd just drop Doc back and bring on JRC.Elthamaddick said:what's up with Ramsey?

Charles, the Lowe twins, Yates, Chalobah, Palmer are the ones of the Sheff Wed team that I recogniseIorfa on the bench is probably their only real experience, not sad to not see Inglesson in their team1

We desperately need the wingbacks to push forward. That plus Burke’s fragile legs seems like a recipe for disaster3

oh god, here we go again4

Squeaky bum time starts now0

I won’t be shocked if the three (un)wise men turn up bearing gifts to the Wendies of a first home win. Just saying 🤷🏻♀️0

Hopefully Ramsay's absence is precautionary, as otherwise with just 2 weeks of the season left, we might not see him again this season. Having said that we have tons of cover in that position, with Burke, Sichenje and Gough who can all play that position.
Coventry being completely absent is notable. I think most people expected him to step up to this level better than he has. It does show we have quite a bit of depth in many positions, indeed too much depth if we can leave Berry and Coventry out of the 20 altogether, never mind youngsters like Fullah and Gough.0 -
Happy that Godden starts.
Not so about Burke and no Ramsay.
Will need to score to get anything from the game. 2 and we might win it.1 -
He asked to be dropped as he is fed up with people spelling his name wrong.Elthamaddick said:what's up with Ramsey?

Not keen on Burke, on ability basis, the less he's on the pitch the better.2

Burke was the scorer in one of the last games we scored 2 goals in, which was against Wednesday at home. Clearly looking for that creative spark from him again today. If he's fit and he can stay fit for the game then he's a very good replacement for Ramsay, let's hope for his sake and ours he doesn't break down today. Sichenje is there to come on for him later but hopefully as a 60/70th minute precautionary sub. Lots of attacking players to come on as well if we're chasing a win which is good to see. Fingers crossed this doesn't have to be a nightmare today5

Great to see Godden starting. Not sure how fit Reece Burke is.1
