Olympic Stadium; our day in court

It was a crime against the game and a Tory stitch up by people who know all about money but nothing about football. It was also a crime against tax payers and how Johnson and Brady and her fellow soft porn peddlars got away with it points out major failings with our country. But ultimately it is not a great place to watch football and the Boleyn ground was. It will be important West Ham come straight back up if they go down as it could ultimately suck them into a whirlpool of destruction. And the sad thing is, if that happens a lot of football fans who would have been saddened by this outcome will now have a good chuckle.4

This stadium has been a noose around their neck since they moved there, and it will only get tighter in the championship.
It's amazing how much more welcoming the West Ham fans were to us at Upton Park than the Palace fans were at the khazi.
If we need to share the valley for a couple of seasons with them, I'd be happy to do so.5 -
If we had gone there from the start instead of Selhurst and Lennie had got us promoted to the old First Division then I doubt we would have ever returned to the Valley. The numbers of us crossing the river when we did move to there were low but we were in the old division 2 and had we been a first division team then I suspect were would have been getting more commercially viable crowds. We might even have lasted a bit longer and been one of the first PL teams.4

That understates the difference with Manchester. Up there the brief to the architect was that it would be a football stadium after the games so it only cost £20m to get it ready. Seb Coe wasnt having any of that for London, he bears some responsibility for this colossal waste of taxpayers money. The only way the stadium could have a legacy was with FAPL football, so logically West Ham, but Coe insisted that athletics must always be the primary purpose of it. Then it dawned on London that it would be a white elephant so Johnson organised the bid, Levy ran rings around him, so of course anything for his mates Gullivan and Brady to take it and ensure his “legacy”. But his legacy turned out to be £323m of taxpayers money to fit it out as GullivanBrady demanded and a contract which costs us a further £10-£15m p.a. in perpetuity.Ducktapeshoerepairs said:The fans were sold a dream, but moving into a stadium that was obviously not built for football seems crazy in hindsight. I know it was similar to Man City (but at least they have turned it more into a football stadium post commonwealth games).I’ve got no sympathy for the fans either. The only London club with no Supporters Trust ( tho the Spanners one is predictably dodgy) and those few fans who raised objections were bullied and threatened.3 -
It’s for that reason that I find it hard to dish out any negative stuff about The Hammers.Weegie Addick said:I’ll add that as a fan who experienced the era from a Charlton perspective, playing at Upton Park was a much more welcoming and acceptable alternative to The Valley than the other place (nearly said shitehole) ever could be.
The difference between the welcome and acceptance we received from them, as opposed to Smellhurst Lark, was like chalk and cheese.
I won’t forget that time at Upton Park, it felt like they were genuinely pleased to help us, whereas it was purely a financial deal with the Glaziers set up by the miserable and loathsome Ron (did you ever see him smile) Noades.8 -
I was reading about the solar panels on the London Stadium and wondered why all London clubs don't apply.
The £4.35 million London Stadium solar panel project was primarily funded by the Mayor of London's Green Finance Fund, a £500 million initiative supporting public sector decarbonization, with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) overseeing it as the first project under this fund. This investment aims to significantly cut the stadium's carbon footprint and energy costs by generating clean power on-site.

I guess Noades might have had a grin when he sold that pile of shit to Goldberg, but still retained the tractor at the training ground 🚜SoundAsa£ said:

I'm sure gullivan and the Brady hag did nicely out of it, which is all that really matters.guinnessaddick said:https://x.com/eplbible/status/2009634895086108888?s=46&t=l3gVPecVjs4wU2WBKFZZywThe dream that was sold to their fans.
Feel a tiny bit sorry for the decent WHU fans, but only a tiny bit. They seemed pretty full of it at the time on the basis a massively subsidised shit stadium would free up funds for improving the team.
I'm enjoying their struggles this season.4 -

Watched this a couple of days back, essentially he’s correct in that the stadium is a millstone around the neck of the taxpayer and the best thing would be to get rid of it.Unfortunately the optics of giving it away would be bad enough despite the money it costs the tax payer each year, however the optics of what Brady most likely wants which is to be given it along with a chunk of money would be even worse. So this leaves us with a Mexican standoff of sorts where everyone continues to lose.0

Cant stand the sour-faced cow. She's done well for WHU but was instrumental in royally fucking over the taxpayer.6

"It has been a privilege to walk away with a pot load of cash" Couldn't find that bit in her statement.7

I have no info, but I could well imagine she and Kretinsky fell out. I think he is pissed off with his “investment” too. Looks like they will survive, but the pain will continue, not least for the taxpayer.1 -
Lady Dildo has left the building. Wanktastic!3

I think that's up for debate. In the 16 years she's been there they've won the championship play off, the conference league and had an average league position of 13th.IdleHans said:Cant stand the sour-faced cow. She's done well for WHU but was instrumental in royally fucking over the taxpayer.
In the 16 years prior to that they won the championship play off, the intertoto cup, were FA cup runners up and had an average league position of 13th.
The main difference is that now they have the worst stadium in the football league. They're the supporters I feel sorry for the most to be honest.1 -
Dont feel too sorry for them. The vast majority of them wanted that deal. Well in so far as they understood anything about it. They didnt even have a proper Supporters Trust, and the few who did speak up against it were hounded by Brady. I mean really, some quite sinister undertones in play. I remember the second day of the Information Tribunal ( after which we got the full contract released) there were a couple of meatheads sitting at the back of the seats reserved for the public. They didnt try anything to be fair but they definitely weren’t there to assist their post-graduate law degree studies.Leeds_Addick said:

Sod them. I’d rather they went down than Spurs, but it doesnt look likely now.8 -
So there were two spanners there. Just watching aaht for the baroness.PragueAddick said:

Cheers @PragueAddick. Very timely. My response below was drafted but not sent as Mrs Idle wanted her dinner.Leeds_Addick said:

Fair points. Purely on a financial basis (her one benchmark, I suspect), she got them a nearly new, practically free stadium.
I don't have much sympathy for their fans though - IIRC they were largely happy to take a free gift and their fans group not to engage with the process at all. You'd need to speak to Prague about it for the proper detail though.
Anyway, scabby little club, no loss if they go down, except to the tax payers of London, obvs. I still think the London stadium should be bulldozed for housing. Compensate them in the amount they would have paid in rent but no more.

I agree that she will see her tenure as successful as it has been financially but the worst thing I can imagine happening to Charlton (bar ceasing to exist) is moving to a stadium like that. I didn’t realise there had been a lack of opposition within their fanbase. I find that baffling but maybe indicative of what they were sold the stadium as versus what it turned out to be. A travesty made worse by how good Upton Park was.IdleHans said:

I was lucky enough to get some 2012 tickets. The day I was at the OS, Richard Murray was too, so I met up with him at the catering area. He said “it’s a lovely stadium, but its never a football stadium”. Whereas Upton Park was a classic, and they could easily have upgraded it ( or so I was told). There’s an alternative argument, that it could have been planned to be football ready all along, as the Etihad was, but Seb Coe insisted on it being retained for athletics use.3

The Boleyn was pretty hemmed in, it would have been difficult and they wanted more corporate space and all that. They should have got themselves a big old bit of land out in Barking Riverside that could have housed a great new stadium next to a new station but as we know there was desperation to find a use for after the Olympics. The fans were told the new ground would put them in the top 6 every season.0
