Summer Window 2026 - Rumours and Discussion

They way I look at it if we are to push on we must upgrade on a lot of positions. As this year has shown yes we have hard workers at the club and no one can knock that, but we need more quality. So not taking away anything from the current squad. Football is a tough business at times so unfortunately little loyalty.
I would not extend any contract apart from the club option we have on TC.
We need an undisputed #1 goalkeeper. Kaminski and Mannion are a mistake waiting to happen unfortunately, as yesterday showed as well with Kaminski very suspect on crosses.
Also a starting RWB in. Could be Clarke or Bree. Both have different qualities we can use. And cover for the LWB position. Don't mind that cover being Fevrier, an honest hard working player.
LCB we should look strenghten as well. There will be clubs in for Macca (contract up in 2027) and Bell can't be trusted to play 40 games a season and his contract runs down in 2027 as well.
Midfield we probably will try to get a younger Coady or a better Coventry. Ideally Coventry and Docherty are used as backup next season, but I wouldn't mind selling Coventry if we can get a good fee for him since his contract is also up in 2027.
Preferably a new winger and a proven top half Championship quality striker as competition for Kelman, who I like and believe can become our #1 striker.
Definitely not looking at a quiet summer 😅0 -
At this level he's pretty average really, and as he's 26, I'm not sure he'll improve significantly. We need better in that position.Alwaysneil said:
Interested @Henry Irving has heard Coventry will be off, although i like him i wont be distraut unlike leuth.

De Keersmaecker is also undoubtedly a player I’d be looking for as well. But Mills is far more aggressive and defensively minded than Apter. He’s definitely the kind of wing back you want if you’ve got someone like Burke behind him. Sichenje and him is fast and aggressive but would be a little scary occasionally.Oh Eddie Youds... said:Lots of people here seem to be advocating Oxford wide players like Currie & Mills.
Just be aware that Oxford do not play wing backs. Mills is a Winger in the mould of Apter. He is used to having a right back like Broddie Spencer behind him doing the defensive work.
The most suitable player Oxford have for our formation is De Keersmaecker. Highly rated mobile CM with the ability to create & pick a pass.
I think his work rate, fitness and strength really suit Jones’s high intensity play.3 -
I’d sell Kanu and Anderson. There will be interest a plenty in the two of them this year. Also sell A Mitchell. Plymouth will be after him permanently. From what has been said I’d be inclined to get rid of Cov.If he doesn’t sign I’d also be inclined to sell Ramsay to get some more money for the war chest1

One departure could well be Alex Mitchell.
Plymouth manager saying in today's Football League Paper that he wants to sign him permanently.
Interestingly he also says there is going to be a lot of interest in Mitchell from other clubs and he doesn't know what Charlton's plans for him are.
Maybe one we might actually be able to sell for a small profit?4 -
We paid 300k + 20% sell on to Millwall should comfortably make a profit in today’s market, more clubs interested the better for us. Just comes down to how much do L1 clubs think a top centre back at that level is worthFortune 82nd Minute said:One departure could well be Alex Mitchell.

Josh was a great character and played so well during our play off winning League 1 campaign and started the Champ season well before it was cut so short. I'm so pleased for him he can get continued to get fit during the next next 3 months and he surely will feel like a new signing.
We live in an age of opaqueness when it comes to Injuries and I thought I saw a video of him in the gym on a bike.
Great lad is Josh even if he needs singing lessons 😀0 -
No idea why anyone would want to sell Kanu - give him a year in league 1 - if his all round game is good enough, he can be part of the squad in 27/28, if not we can sell him for more than we can now, because he’s already proven for us that he’s capable of scoring goals in league 1, so he’s pretty much nailed on to get 12+ goals next season assuming he stays fit.12
-
I really don’t want to sell him but it isn’t that simple. There’s one year left on his deal. If he doesn’t sign a new one before August we probably have to cash inarny23394 said:No idea why anyone would want to sell Kanu - give him a year in league 1 - if his all round game is good enough, he can be part of the squad in 27/28, if not we can sell him for more than we can now, because he’s already proven for us that he’s capable of scoring goals in league 1, so he’s pretty much nailed on to get 12+ goals next season assuming he stays fit.12 -
I like Coventry but I wouldn’t be gutted if he went.
Tidy player, one of the first names on the team sheet for any League One side. Championship felt like it was slightly too fast for him at times.
Admittedly, it must be hard playing his role when with so little attacking quality around him.5 -

He’s also the kind of player we could get a decent fee for from a top end L1 club, even if we have to give half of it awayLaddick01 said:I like Coventry but I wouldn’t be gutted if he went.

Elthamaddick said:Listening to Jones’ interview I don’t see him being too sentimental
I can see a high turnover of players this summer, he clearly doesn’t see us as a struggling side next season
I hear the words of Nathan but will he and big Phil be backed to bring in upgrades to play with the likes Of Jones, Ramsay, Bell, Kelman etc.
Carey's season fell away but his 8 goals were vital though he needs to improve other parts of his game. Knibbs has potential but the jury is still out as injuries and lack of game time means we just don't know his potential at this level.
Leaburn hasn't kicked on this season but could still improve to be a good foil for Kelman. Dykes did a job in the short term and we are thankful for that but I personally never want to see two big man in partnership as it makes CAFC just hoof the ball forward. Dykes with the carrot of Scotland gave 100% every game and with Godden being injured for most of the season his experience was needed.
TC is hot and cold and he really needs to believe in himself but he was asked to be a LWB which wasn't fair on the lad.
It's just great that we can speculate on Championship standard players but it always uncertainty when players are new to this 2nd tier.

6 (half) of that list were out on loan this season so you're not really replacing them any way and Dykes is OOC. If we don't bring in 5 or so new starters we'll be in trouble again so that list isnt too far off the mark. Id keep godden though for the experience/mentor role though if his wage demands are not too high.thenewbie said:
There is absolutely zero chance we get rid of all of those players. At least not this summer. Not because of their quality but having to find and afford genuine improvements for that many players at once is just not feasible and if we get rid of them all and can't get replacements/improvements we're fucked purely on a numbers basis.FAVADDICK said:I think personally, if your going to move forward you need a massive clear out
Kaminski
Gillesphey
Burke
Mitchell
Coventry
Berry
Apter
Tanto
Leaburn

Unfortunately Godden

Taylor
Anderson
Obviously the loan players will head back, just means theres alot of work to do over the summer ( which i know is alot )
Over the next 12-18 months most of them will eventually be pruned off and (hopefully) improved on but it will be evolution not revolution.
We can focus on getting a few genuine upgrades OR replacing squad dross with different squad dross but not both at once with our budget.0 -

Whatever happens this summer lets calm down and not laud it as the best window since 2011/2012.

People go on about the signings we made but Kaminski , Bell , Carey , Kelman , Fev , Coady Knibbs Dykes have all had a major say in us staying up … unfortunately some of the players that got us to the championship have let NJ down not the new players
plus of course losing Godden for most of the season

After the result against Wednesday away and the numerous home defeats it was said that the last window was a shocking.
The truth is it was mixed.
We will get the OTT comments for this summer window as well; the overwhelmed and underwhelmed is all part of the speculation.

They didn’t but Mbick had maxed out his value when he’s only playing at L2. Brighton were never going to offer us more this summer than they did in JanuaryThe Red Robin said:

Right, other than watching millwall crumble in the play offs, this has to be the main focus now - who do we want to try and keep of the current loanees? who do we offload generally and then the difficult bit, who do we bring in to make us better? I've seen enough from fevrier to want to keep him and the same from tanto not to. Clarke and Chambers i'd let go whilst coady and dykes i'd like to keep but not sure it will fit the finances.Apter i'd try and offload but likely he'll come back. For me, we need to concentrate on the midfield and id include the wing backs in that. Major overhaul needed right across it if we want to progress. Gonna be interesting seeing what we do and i have faith NJ knows what's needed. Will be a lot of the current squad knowing they have to impress in pre season if they want to be part of things going forwards that's for sure.0
-
Thats true, but when he plays and scores a few off the bench for us in the championship he'll be worth more

Stan Mills. Yes please.1

My way too early to call predictions for the squad next season are:
Keepers
Kaminski, Mannion, Brookes
Despite a lot of discontent and talk on here about them not being good enough, keeper won't be an issue in NJ and the recruitment team's eyes and they'll leave it as is
Wingbacks
New, New, Edwards, New
The biggest change to the squad, Chambers and Clarke will move on, Fevrier won't return, and Ramsay will stay at RCB, meaning we'll look to sign an entirely new set of wingbacks, save for the returning Edwards. Expect Bree to be in the conversation.
Centre backs
Sichenje, Ramsay, Burke, Jones, Bell, New
Not much change here, a new LCB in to replace Gillesphey, but as long as they are all fit (hahahaha) then it's not a bad contingent to have
Central Midfielders
New, New, Coventry, Docherty, Costello
2 starters needed here to relegate the rest to squad players, one needs to be a proper box to box midfielder, with an eye for a forward pass, the other needs to be mobile and tough tackling
Attacking Midfielders
Carey, Knibbs, New
A new number 10 to replace Berry, but not much change here
Attackers
Kelman, Campbell, Leaburn, New, New
A target man to replace Dykes and another winger/striker in to replace Apter in the squad
This would see Gillesphey, Mitchell, Mitchell, Asiimwe, Anderson, Berry, Godden, Apter, Olaofe all leave in some way, alongside all the loanees.
Mbick, Fullah, Kanu, Gough and Mwamba all to be the youngsters starting to integrate into the squad, maybe Kanu goes on loan again to league 1 this time.
9 signings, not actually a massive turnover but hopefully enough of them are starters to push us on a bit15 -

Coventry is fine as a reserve you just don’t want him starting. I personally hope the plan is to upgrade 4-5 starters and have the ones they replace as reserves and then offload some of the fringe playersLaddick01 said:I like Coventry but I wouldn’t be gutted if he went.

I’d guess the reason Coventry could go is he has a year left on his contract, we probably don’t want him signed up for another 3/4 years and he’s young enough that we could get a decent fee for him.Bostonaddick said:

Goalkeepers, wing backs, centre backs make you spot on there.
Attacking midfielders I don't see us replacing Berry given we have Carey and Knibbs there I think Fullah may be used as 3rd choice.
As for attackers I think we can take Campbell out of the striker bracket and place him in a winger position along with a new signing. This is for when we set up in a 4-2-3-1 how we finished up yesterday and played last season, a true replacement for Small which at the moment is Fevrier but I expect would be a priority position for Jones.
So as for attackers I would call these centre forwards in a 4-2-3-1 or 5-3-2 which Kelman and Leaburn can offer. Fair to say a new signing here but all depends really what we do with Mbick, Dykes and Godden too but I wouldn't say is a priority position, probably a more nice-to-have if the right player became available for the right price.
I can see Jones looking to revert us back to the 4-2-3-1 but still have the option to play 5-3-2 wingbacks
GK - Kaminski, Mannion, Brooks
DF - Edwards, Ramsay, Jones, Bell, Sichenje, Burke, new/Gillesphey, new LWB, new RWB, new RWB
MF - Knibbs, Carey, Docherty, Coventry, JRC, Campbell, new winger, new CM, new CM
ST - Kelman, new/Leaburn, Godden
That would then be the 25 senior players all over age 21 with the youngsters providing extra cover
The other thing to consider is if we sign Fevrier on a permanent he may well provide that 2nd new RWB option even LWB cover if we can't sign 2 x RWB's or a suitable LWB but if he would be to play in the 4-2-3-1 as a winger then covering a few positions may then free up room for an extra signing.
For me 6 essential signings needed CMx2, winger, RWBx2, LWB (maybe 5 if Fevrier is signed)
an upgrade needed on Gillesphey if we can + also someone taking him off us
potential new striker to upgrade on Leaburn if the right striker becomes available
I would make it probably 8 signings needed.1 -
Are both Burke & Gillesphey under contract next season?
Interesting that you see Gillesphey moving on & Burke staying. Neither are up to the level in my opinion. Both too slow.3
