Think we wasted time loaning him to L2 great That he won YPOTY. But feels like this just gave him a confidence boost opposed to truly testing him
I guess the risk with L1 was him being a squad player and not progressing from what he had been for us at that level.

I thought it was interesting that NJ said he specifically wanted a loan outside of London. I presume if he went on loan again he'd want the same thing

We'll get him back and Jones will play him a left wing back to replace TC.

If it really boosted his confidence then it was not a waste of time. He'd been in and out of the squad, his form was a bit patchy. If he comes out of this fired up and confident he's got what it takes to go higher, that's a good thing.

That's really interesting to know. Kinda takes the Bromley/Wombles if they stay up ideas off the table for next season's loan. Really mature move from DK to want to move away.

It may just have been that he wanted to test himself without the comforts of home or the distractions of London, and now he knows he can deal with that he may not mind so much. And he'd be following in Asiimwe's footsteps again if he went to Wimbledon, although I'm not sure Nathan has had as successful a year as he did last.

He was a bit part player for us in league one, so i don't think there will have been many L1 sides queueing up to sign him. At best we might have got a relegation struggler to take him but would that have been any good for his career?

I think the L2 move has worked out perfectly. He's had a great season, confidence will be high and now he's won the YPOTY there will be much better L1 sides interested in loaning him next season.

Bagged 6 goals in 30 games in L1 as a 19 year old. That record is good enough for a L1 forward then you take into account only 18 were starts and his whole job was to do the dirty work for Alfie May which is even more impressive. Wimbledon wanted him despite struggling in the league their top scorer has 12 2nd has 9 which aren’t bad returns.

Personally I thought him scoring 15+ in L2 was going to be a given maybe that’s just me but I wanted to see how he did as the main main for a smaller L1 club rather than playing at a level he was already too good for

  • Kanu not being recalled at Christmas was a mistake. The kid is mustard and his energy and hustle much needed in a tired and a 'much the same' attack. We should be building a team around him next - sadly I am not sure (sixth sense) NJ is keen on him.

It’s an interesting one. League 1 loan might have been better for his development, but the league 2 loan and scoring goals will definitely be better for his value. If we do decide to sell this summer then the league 2 loan will have been the best decision

Reminds me of an end of season game we played against Cheltenham. For some reason they did their awards during the warm up and Alfie May won every single one and had to collect them individually

Personally I think we should keep him for first half of season and let him have a crack. Offers something different to most of our forwards. Personally had him ahead of Leaburn last season in terms of development however understand why Leaburn was kept around as he is a different style of striker more suited to hwo Jones wanted to play. I have always believed most of fans have slept on how good Kanu is/could be.

Players player of the season is the one I would like to win.
And fans player of the season.
We’re not looking at the face of some grizzled cynical old pro but a lad with huge promise just starting out.
Be glad that Daniel is signed with us.

    Well done DK.

A big club like Walsall have an awards evening at £40 per head at their stadium which fans can attend.

Can't really expect little clubs like Charlton to do similar.

Regardless of whether we plan to keep him or loan him out again, the first thing we need to do is extend his contract.

He's out of contract next summer and we can't let that run down.

Genuinely must be the most successful loan season for any of our youngsters ever?

I’m sure what his contract situation is but for me I’d like to see him given a loan in league one at least until Christmas before we let him go

Give him a new two year deal until 2029, he can't cost that much with wages?
I dont like the idea of loaning him out with a year left on his Contract - Not after a success period with Walsall
He gets loaned out to League One for the 2026/27 season, if he excels, we can trial him in the Championship (best case scenario) in 2027/28... If he fails then he gets a second League One loan with the likely prospect that he gets sold in summer 2028.

Yes but he's got to sign it, he might know someone else will offer better terms and first team minutes

Oh yeah thats the risk as well, but I'd rather offer him something this summer than risk letting his contract run down.

Does offering him a deal (even if he turns it down) enhance the compensation we would receive if he leaves us when his contact expires?

    It doesn’t enhance compensation.

Compensation is only given when a player under the age of 23 rejects a contract that is more than the wage they was receiving on their current contract (stops clubs offering a player £500 a week in order to gain compensation benefits).

Compensation is then agreed between the two clubs or goes to trial if an agreement can’t be reached about how much is a fair amount for the player.

However worth noting in this case Kanu’s current market value is significantly more than what we’d get if we kept him until his contract expired and he rejected a deal
