Summer Window 2026 - Rumours and Discussion

Makes sense. We probably can't afford 5 or 6 experienced good Championship players, but if we can bring in a couple along with 3 or 4 we think are near that level, or will be from abroad for cheaper it's sensible.
Found the piece really interesting, and can see exactly what Jones wants. Let's hope we get it, also in the previous piece his comments about the right ones, so not necessarily getting in targets as early as we might have before.
I hope people can show a little bit of patience and not panic if we don't immediately sign 3 or 4.9 -
I think it feels like we will add a few players with championship experience, but will probably be on the cheaper side in terms of transfer fee. But probably sign 2 or 3 players from overseas that are a bit younger but we think are championship level players3
-
The work permits thing is interesting though. I think we're safe to assume Dixon is on an exemption and Sichenje will be too. If Dixon had played in the World Cup this summer he might have been able to get a permit. That means we either need to ship Dixon out (I think if you loan a player you take over their exemption), can only buy 2 foreign players or need to find players who fit the criteria for a permit and they won't be cheap0
-
Telling perhaps from the Cawley piece that Apter isn't named checked by Jones.
Key points:
Smaller squad
Plenty will leave or go out on loan
Quality not quantity incoming
No longer shopping in league 1
Looking overseas
Prem loans not ruled out11 -
I think it'll be a really interesting summer to see how we approach it from this aspect. I definitely expect us to be full on exemptions by the end of the window but I'll have to go back and look up the WP criteria to figure out the rest of it.fenaddick said:The work permits thing is interesting though. Can see it being 3/4 signings from abroad ultimately. One will be the " marquee" CM I would expect.2 -
Thought that was the most interesting bit. They've clearly had a massive fallout, be surprised if we see him in a Charlton shirt againHenry Irving said:Telling perhaps from the Cawley piece that Apter isn't named checked by Jones.

On smaller squad, I think it was Gavin Carter who recently talked about 8-8-8 becoming 9-9-9, so that might not be the case. More that we have plenty of players to sell, release or loan out to make space for new signings.Henry Irving said:Telling perhaps from the Cawley piece that Apter isn't named checked by Jones.

I can just about cope with Apter and Tanto as deals that haven’t worked out. I really struggle with Ahadme under contract till 2028 though.10

Which is interesting because although he's clearly the worst of the three, his fee and wages will be the lowest too. I agree it was really poor business but he takes more criticism than the othersWeegie Addick said:I can just about cope with Apter and Tanto as deals that haven’t worked out. Nothing surprising in that interview though it's nice to see the transfer strategy laid out. With our budget the best of L1 approach was always going to be a risk but we managed to get it right. Every transfer is a gamble and asking a large number of players to step up is asking a lot. As it was, Carey mostly did well, Kelman will look at an overall decent season that he can kick on from, Knibbs has had bad injury luck and Apter and Olaofe lacked the bottle for the step. Regardless though the team stayed up which was always the whole aim, and never actually slipping into the relegation zone is an excellent achievement. Now we've got a decent core of players we need to add quality to. Not having to bring in 10 players will help a lot and if we can find a balance this summer between what we did in the two windows we should hopefully be bringing in a few really good additions in key areas and pushing our current first teamers back onto the bench. It's a big one to get right though, we won't have that promotion momentum next season and we can't afford as many bad periods as we had this season so the quality has to be there from the off5

Yes!king addick said:What do we think for a 34 year James Tavernier?
Personally think that would be a decent signing on a free.1 -
“We have to improve the squad significantly. Last year, we needed seven or eight to go into our squad and ones that could bridge the gap between top-end League One and Championship. We’ve proved we have done that. There is still more to come from Harvey Knibbs, Isaac Olaofe, Sonny Carey, on a consistent basis, and Charlie Kelman."
Interesting quote from Nathan Jones on Rich Cawleys substack. I may be reading in to it too closely but no mention of Apter but chose to name Olaofe. Apter could be one we cut our losses on if we can move him out.4 -
The lad Graham looks to be a real prospect. I'd be excited by that one.
I watched Tolaj regularly at Shots for a season there. He was quality and I said then I could see him making it in L1/Champ, would love to see him join, mainly as I've followed him ever since.
Have to sign Coventry up, think it's been forgotten how good and consistent he's been for 18 months. Not a great end to the season but it was clearly flagged that he's been playing with an injury. I our position you don't jettison a player who's proved he can compete at this level.
Delighted to see NJ say we'll be looking at signings from abroad, get it right and I can see it massively lifting the floor and ceiling of this squad quickly and cost effectively.4 -
Really like what jones is saying. It feels like forever ago where we were able to shop in anything that wasn’t the championship bargain bins at this level. Nice to hear that that’s about to change in a sensible fashion.I think we’ll see more sichenje style signings from Europe, dotted in with some more experienced championship heads. Good to hear he’s identified the midfield and quality with the ball in the final third which is where we’ve been sorely lacking throughout the season.4

I'm fascinated by how we managed to get this one so wrong. It was immediately apparent that he wasn't good enough.Weegie Addick said:I can just about cope with Apter and Tanto as deals that haven’t worked out. I really struggle with Ahadme under contract till 2028 though.3 -
I think it would indeed be too early to rule out Olaofe clicking suddenly. He has pace and power, just not happening in front of goal for him this season. Definitely would like to see him given a go in preseasonedslater_ said:“We have to improve the squad significantly. He was 23, scored double figures for a Cambridge side that finished 18th the season before, and has many of the attributes that Jones loves in a footballer (remember they pre-season talk about getting him out of the gym).Chunes said:

I don't feel like it's that wild of a pick to sign him up at the time. I imagine they thought they might be able to develop him, whilst getting promoted and make a profit when he was sold - but it didn't work out that way and not every signing will.

I didn't read his comments as meaning a smaller squad than we currently have, as we have a ridiculous number of players out on loan at the moment, who will return in the summer, and many will be sold or loaned out againHenry Irving said:Telling perhaps from the Cawley piece that Apter isn't named checked by Jones.

Or he just forgot one name in a list of names in the heat of the moment of an interview / presser.fenaddick said:

It does seem like he was picked based on his work rate and the fact he scored some goals for Cambridge, without actually looking at his other core attributes. I remember watching the goals he scored for them, and I think only one was scored with his feet, and it was an absolute spoon. The rest was nodding the ball inside the six yard box. And when he joined us, it was clear that he was wiry rather than strong, and that was paired with really poor balance, which made him a disaster.FishCostaFortune said:

If Tanto had gone out on loan and done really well then i'd be hopeful he could kick on. But he's not even starting for Stockport and in their last game didn't even get off the bench when they needed a goal.
Perhaps a good pre-season with us might change things but based on this seasons form i'm not exactly confident he'll even be with us next year.5 -

All of those comments from Jones are positive imo.
Quality signings, creative signings and decent loans. If that’s how it turns out then we’ll be in for a good season I hope.4 -
I'm fully expecting this place to be in meltdown when Lincoln announce signing number 7 whilst we've only got 2 in a week into June. With people claiming we should have been all over the central midfielder they've just signed from Harrogate.cabbles said:

That’s what I was thinking as well. Looks like Apter has struggles at Bolton.edslater_ said:“We have to improve the squad significantly. He’s giving me big Charlie Kirk flashbacks5 -
Why? Some signings work, some don’t. Wrong place, wrong time. We would have been moaning if we didn’t sign anyone at all in the first place.Chunes said:
