Once he said to me: ‘Well, whatever happens to you in your football career - it can’t be any harder than this. So it will stand you in good stead’. He was dead right, as well."

    Another very good read which makes you think. I loved Lennie, still do, but in the run-up to the BTTV campaign I started to resent his lack of enthusiasm for it, and especially when he cleared off when we were close to the return but stumbling a bit. Reading this, I see his side a bit better. He had worked wonders keeping us where we were, the players didn't have any relationship to the Valley, and now the best ones were being sold against his wishes. He was paid to deliver results on the pitch, and selling these players was making his task more difficult. 

    Although he doesn't quite match up to Curbs achievements, he can argue that without his own excellent work, we might not have survived or been able to return when we did. So after Curbs, he is the second best manager of my Charlton Life, which started in '62.

    “It’s funny, I often talk to players now, especially midfield ones, about getting in the box and scoring goals. But I do think, looking back, that sometimes I went a little bit rogue. I don’t think I’d be my own manager’s dream player because I became a bit obsessed with scoring."

    That's odd mate. Hasn't gone through to your Junk Mail folder by any chance?

    Nice summary of the season from @Airman Brown on Rich Cawley’s Substack. Think it’s been a really good addition to the Charlton content available to fans this season. Well worth a subscribe if you haven’t already.

    Agreed. I think back to the days of club coverage being a tiny paragraph in the London Evening News on a Saturday night to what we have now. I wondered whether @richcawleySLP would be able to sustain his content when the Substack started but he has exceeded it in spades.

    Well done Richard and @meatballmendes for some great articles and interviews during the season and I look forward to the summers rumours and scoops as well as next season.

    Shame Rich is a Fulham supporter, I've never forgiven them for that throw in 😂

    Also subscribe.  Glad I chose to. I usually avoid as many subscriptions as I can... but this one has brought me a lot. Speedy post match reaction suited my lifestyle last season I.e. no nightlife on Saturday evenings

    The best subscription I hold. Incredibly well written articles and interviews covering past and present, combined with excellent midweek and post match pods with Rich and Louis Mendez. Hope enough of us are making it worth it for Rich as a lot of effort must go into what he produces and delivers. Cheers Rich & Louis too!
