I think this year's L1 playoff selection is pretty weak. Stockport have finished 3rd two seasons running, but got 10 points more last season.SDAddick said:Watching this match reminds me of the gulf in quality between League One and the Championship, and really highlights how well we did to stay up this season as the team that went up via the Playoffs. More to come from us hopefully, but the gulf in quality between the 3-6 in the two leagues is pretty massive. I'm so glad we're in the Championship, I hope we keep it that way for some time to come.
Luton and Plymouth both had relegation hangovers which left them just too much of a gap to close, but to me both teams are stronger than the 4 teams in the playoffs.1 -
Tanto coming on at half time2

Forget the play offs. This should be the sub par Charlton striker shield3

Thanks for that, I've not kept that close of an eye on League One. Stevenage definitely don't look up to much. I think the Orient of last season would smash them.killerandflash said:

Was coming on here to say the same thing. Haven't watched much of him since he left us but he's an absolute regular in a top league 1 side and always seems to get very good ratings on fotmob. Been making me wonder if there was an error letting him go, especially given our issues in that spot.SDAddick said:Who was it that kept Edun out of the side for us? Sess and someone else? He's looked good at Peterbrough and now Stockport whenever I've seen him since he left us, but felt like he barely got a chance when playing for us. Scores the odd goal from LB as well.
But as you say he didn't do much when he was with us. Also maybe better in a back four?2 -
Straightforward 3-0 aggregate win for Stockport.1

Too many businesses just pay travel expenses for interns which is a fucking piss take. Especially difficult for grads coming out of uni who can’t get a job and feel like they have to take it for experience.
We get approached for internships all the time and I will only take someone on if I can afford to pay them a proper salary8 -

Reportedly £6k a year, get away with it by calling it a work placementvalleynick66 said:
How poorly paid are we talking?fenaddick said:One thing I hope doesn’t happen is the intern being vilified. Southampton (and lots of football clubs!) pay their interns poorly and the lad was clearly working under instructions trying to get his foot in the door of a very competitive industry. I’m sure lots of us would or did bend rules here and there to attempt to get somewhere in the world
Is this an assumption or is the intern salary known?

So I don’t know how to put the £6k into context.
I associate an intern with a short term (weeks/months only) assignment. So not clear in this instance for how long they are working.Regardless I take your general point but would think (hope) it wouldn’t reflect badly on the individual as their CV will simply show a temporary assignment at a known place in a role. If anyone needed to put 2 & 2 together on a future job interview (elsewhere) it might just provide a useful talking point.0 -
To be fair, 45p a mile from Southampton to Middlesbrough and back is a fair old wedgeDamoNorthStand said:Too many businesses just pay travel expenses for interns which is a fucking piss take. I will be quite surprised if Southampton don't get kicked out. It is now a very specific rule they have broken. If that does happen, then they blow the chance of a £200M pay day and pile the pressure onto themselves for next season, as fail to go up then and they just become one of many Championship clubs without parachute payments finding it tough to compete.
What an unbelievably poor decision by whomever it was to send the intern up there; the risk v reward just isn't there.4 -
What’s it got to do with Wrexham? Southampton spied on Middlesbrough during the play offs.DamoNorthStand said:I cant see how they cant be punished for this and thrown out the play offs..... but how do you remedy it? Do you just put boro through to the final, do you promote Wrexham into the play offs?
Point being i dont see how this can be sorted out fairly.....4 -
He knowingly cheated. It’s more than “bend rules”.fenaddick said:One thing I hope doesn’t happen is the intern being vilified. He has made it very difficult for himself now to move forward in his football analyst career.3 -
So a guaranteed long journey next season from the 3 northern teams left coming up
Although 2 hours on a train to Stockport is preferable to the other two and the roofs covered now…
Arent the play offs great when your not in them and you’ve just seen the spanners blow their best chance ever 🕺5 -
Apparently they have spied on other teams this year…. If that can be proven then should they even be in the play offs at all?stoneroses19 said:

Won’t happen of course- but I’m definitely thinking they shouldn’t be going to Wembley2 -

Won’t happen of course- but I’m definitely thinking they shouldn’t be going to WembleyI'm not aware that the rule change after the Leeds case included details of the the sanctions that could apply if found guilty. If not then the EFL will fall short of kicking them out. Assuming not then Southampton go to Wembley and Boro have no claim based on accusing the EFL of not applying the mandated sanction. If Southampton are kicked out then they will make a claim based on excessive punishment that was not mandated - and possibly claim £200m in lost revenue as a result. The EFL will bottle it and all we can hope is justice is done by Hull winning.6 -
Can't see this being anything more than a fine. Bob is absolutely right that the EFL will bottle it.0

To be fair any neutral who watched our two play off semi-finals with Wycombe would've automatically had us nailed on for relegation.SDAddick said:Watching this match reminds me of the gulf in quality between League One and the Championship, and really highlights how well we did to stay up this season as the team that went up via the Playoffs. It's not a rule change as technically there was no specific rule when Leeds were caught. They introduced a new rule after that.bobmunro said:DamoNorthStand said:

"EFL Rule 127 (specifically prohibiting observing opponents' training within 72 hours of a match) was introduced in June 2019 following the "Spygate" scandal. The rule was created after Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United were fined £200,000 in early 2019 for watching Derby County train."1 -

Wouldn’t mind Stockport coming up, I need the tick. Bradford are my local club though so hope they can do it.

From a football perspective with Stevenage out, Bradford getting promoted is now the best case scenario.
Team coming off the back of 2 straight promotions into the Championship with still a lot of players that were in their League 2 squad.1 -
To be fair he was mostly kept out of the side when he was by his own poor performances. He was signed to be first choice in 23/24 and this is Charlton so there wasn't any real backup for him. He came to us injured and took a bit of time to get up to speed as well as Holden not being sure if he wanted to play him as a left back or a central midfielder with CBT as wingback. He was then pretty rubbish under Appleton, though our best run of form under him came while Edun was out injured and Thomas or Watson played at LB. We actually only won 2 games where Edun started. He then was kept out of the side after that by Thierry Small, which I think we can all agree was the right choice. He made 26 league appearances that season, 21 starts. He was subbed off at half time twice under two different managers. The next season it was Edwards and Small ahead of him. He wasn't really quick enough to play LWB in the way Jones wanted, wasn't aggressive enough and I think he was scarred by the start he had with us. I think he's a decent L1 player, especially at a club where maybe the expectations aren't quite as high.SDAddick said:Who was it that kept Edun out of the side for us? Sess and someone else? Did it happen during the season, if so, it could (I'm not saying it should) complicate things further. Should they even be in the play offs? Probably too complicated to look at any alternative scenario as both legs of both semis have been played0 -
Southampton broke a written rule in order to get an advantage. In my view Boro and Hull should contest the final, and Southampton should be docked 12 points next season.
The idea of a financial penalty does not suit.5 -
I'm amazed people are getting in a lather about this.
With the proximity of the final and tickets on sale now, it's obvious it will just be a substantial fine. Not saying that's right, but that is what will happen.2 -
The Mirror are reporting the hearing will be tomorrow0

Let’s just hope we haven’t been ‘spying’ on any teams.Seems a ridiculous rule to me.0
