I did wonder whether it actually was a real list of the team. Her antics were so funny and the ref really didn't know what to do when she carried on after the yellow card.

Would've been funny if it was just shithousery of the highest order, simply to sych out the opposition, and in actual fact it was just a list of the team, tea / coffee, milk no sugars etc!!

As a post on the Leicester Women Reddit group said, great saves, but the only one that was not telegraphed where it was going and pea rolled along the floor was scored.

By the way, £65 is amazing value for a full season of elite sport. 14 teams in the league means 13 home games, only a fiver per match.

I would be taking advantage of that if I lived near enough to get down there every week.
I live in West Cork & I have one 😊

What? The only penalty they scored was put right into the top corner....

The percentage of missed penalties in the women's game, especially in shootouts, has gone up massively in recent years. All the articles about it focus on improved goalkeepers and increased pressure, all of which I think are a big part of it, but I haven't seen any analysis on the power of the penalties. The available data isn't great but the average speed of the penalties at the Euro 25 shootout between England and Sweden was apparently 43mph, and that was skewed by Lucy Bronze banging one at 63mph, which was one of the only convincing penalties that got hit that night. The average speed of a penalty in men's football is between 70-80mph and in the women's game it's reported as 55-65mph. Chloe Kelly hit the fastest recorded one at 69mph, which is still slightly less than the lower recorded averages in men's shootouts. Ibrahimovic has been recorded hitting penalties at 93mph.

All that to say that it means there's a lot more pressure on the women to hit their penalties either exactly in the corner or send the keeper the wrong way. Amalie Thestrup's penalty was superb. I don't know how fast it traveled but it looked by far the best struck and its placement was perfect so even though the keeper went the right way she couldn't get to it. Leicester's one successful penalty was sent into the roof of the net with some power which a 5ft8 keeper is never getting to. Heather Payne put a bit more mustard on hers which is why Whitehouse could only turn it onto the post but it still wasn't enough. Mason hit hers with a bit of venom but the placement wasn't great; it didn't need to be because the Leicester keeper was telegraphing her dive every time and Mason kept her head up and watched where she went. This takes nothing away from Whitehouse, all of her saves were excellent and required that she be a top class goalkeeper, but there was only one penalty that Leicester hit where you thought a keeper wouldn't have had a chance. In men's shootouts there are usually plenty of penalties where a top class keeper guesses the right way but just gets done by the power of the strike. We're now working with a generation of goalkeepers who are great with their reflexes and shot stopping going up against a generation of outfield players who are adapting to increased scrutiny and increased physical demands stepping up to take penalties after 120 minutes of toil and seeing that this is an area where the keepers now have such a huge advantage over the takers.

Like with many things in the women's game it's an area where I think just copying the men's game directly isn't going to work. The keepers are doing the same thing as the men; the preparation, the notes on the water bottles, the psychological tricks like meeting the taker halfway to the spot and handing them the ball, delaying the penalty being taken etc and that will work for them but more thought needs to be put into compensating for the fact that elite keepers are going to keep your penalty out if you can't put it in the top corner or send them the wrong way. Smashing a penalty to the extent of your power and aiming for a postage stamp spot is a great way to send your spotkick wide so I think there will end up being a lot more focus on teaching players those Ivan Toney type penalties where the player doesn't hit the ball until the keeper moves. Until those sort of changes start coming in though I think we're going to continue to see low scoring shootouts at the top end of the game in pressure matches

Yes, the only one that was not a pea roller scored.

The Leicester sub on Reddit has been quite scathing of their performance and complementary to our team.

That completely disregards the fantastic work Whitehouse put in, she could have still dived the wrong way or not got down to the ball.

No idea how true it is but I saw someone say the chance of saving 4/5 pens is 0.02%
It’s a bit higher than that.

Assuming 20% of penalties are saved, then the chance of 4 or more pens being saved out of 5 in a shootout is just a binomial calculation.

    5p^4 - 4p^5 (with p = 0.2) = 0.67% not 0.02%.

Still very impressive as it is.
    Copy and paste from AI:

The mathematical odds of a goalkeeper saving exactly 4 out of 5 football penalties in a standard shootout are approximately 0.0039 (0.39% or a 1-in-256 chance). This probability is calculated using the binomial distribution formula based on the historical professional penalty save rate of roughly 14.3%. [1, 2]

Yup, the total odds of 4/5 change depending on where you peg the odds of an individual pen being saved.

I chose to go with 20% as a nice round number (and women’s football seeming to have fewer scored penalties in general) which came back with 0.67% and AI chose 14.3% which gave you 0.39%.
Just to add to the nerd fest, the odds are further reduced by the fact that in order to save 4 out of 5 penalties, it’s necessary for the opposing team to have scored no more than 2 of their own penalties out of their first 4, otherwise there would be no need for the 5th penalty to be taken.
Assuming the AI numbers earlier quoted are correct, this is 6(0.746^2)(0.254^2) + 4(0.746)(0.254^3) + 0.256^4 which equals 0.26978, which is about a quarter, so you can divide those earlier probabilities by about 4.

(I could also narrow it down further by considering possibilities such as a) that the only penalty the team scores is the last one, which would require the opponents to score no more than one of their first 4, or b) that the team in question goes second, meaning the opponents need to score no more than 2 of their 5, but these don’t affect the numbers very much, and more importantly, I can’t be arsed. 🤓)

My thoughts on the penalty shoot out on Saturday was that it looked like Sophie knew she didn't have to go early and could wait for first contact of the penalty.

Saturday was the first time I'd seen a Charlton women's match (I live too far away and watched it on the box), so a question for the regulars ... How good is Sophie Whitehouse ?,  how does she compare to the other English keepers in the women's Premier league ? , could she get in the England team ?

Only if she changes nationality and everyone forgets she’s played for Ireland already.

    Oh well, just a thought.
  • AMAZING VALUE Womens Prem League ST.
Can't believe they are so cheap - £65 for 13 games works out at about a £5 a match.
Wish I lived a bit closer.
Hats off to the Marketing Dept because at those prices they have really done the right thing IMO.
Good luck girls for next season.
Sophie Whitehouse - what a fantastic keeper she is.

Season tickets are great value and although this was the first season I've used a particularly large proportion of mine I've never regretted having one, And this season there are 13 games rather than the usual 11.

Suspect that for games where the visitors will have particularly big followings we might have to open the Jimmy Seed instead of the usual arrangement of giving the away fans the southern end of West Lower, which I assume would be a first if it does happen?

For those wanting to try an away game or two, the usual arrangement in WSL1 is that you buy from our ticket office and there's a dedicated away section, which means a break from having to sign up for other club's ticketing sites in order to buy. I can celebrate promotion by deleting the Southampton app from my phone.

Trying to get a season ticket and it looks like you can't get one in rows C-G in blocks D and E which is weird and quite annoying. Anyone else getting this issue or am I an idiot? (it might be both)

She has benefitted from the support of the excellent Women's goalkeeping coach and won WSL2 save of the month 3 times plus the WSL2 Golden Glove award.

Much improved this season and the real reason Charlton got promoted.

Whereabouts are you trying to get a seat - near the back?

Some of the seats are locked out because they will be part of hospitality packages next season.

Then again typical Charlton. The seat map is linked to men's prices for season tickets.

Me too . But £45 ain't bad. I deserve paying the extra £20 as punishment for lack of belief.

edit - thanks ticket office - £13.50 refunded as I am Mens Season Ticket holder

It was the front 5 rows which is where I usually sit when I go, though it's just occurred to me that I think those might be the seats where they're out of commission because of the alterations they're making to the dugouts this summer. Ended up getting one a bit further back

I got mine last season but only managed one game (same as the men) as I wasn’t travelling in case our sister needed me during her treatment.
Thankfully she is well on the mend so I’m hoping I get to fly over for more than one game next season.

We won't know where the away games will be until the fixtures come out, because 9 of the 14 clubs are Premier League or EFL clubs who don't use their main stadium and they'll all shift at least a few games to the main ground once they see the fixture dates. Also, some may join us, Arsenal, Birmingham and Villa in playing at the club's main ground.

The three that have their own grounds (Chelsea, Everton & City) all use those grounds for under-21 men's games and first-team women's.

So with those caveats, and bearing in mind this is the grounds clubs were using last season and they're free to move any time they want:

    Arsenal - Emirates
    Aston Villa - Villa Park
    Birmingham City - St Andrews
Brighton & Hove Albion - at Crawley Town
    Charlton Athletic - The Valley
Chelsea - at Kingsmeadow (women's team ground)
Crystal Palace - at Sutton United
Everton - at Goodison Park (women's team ground)
Liverpool - at St Helens RLFC
London City Lionesses - at Bromley
Manchester City - at Joie Stadium (women's team ground)
Manchester United - at Leigh Leopards RLFC
Tottenham Hotspur - at Leyton Orient
West Ham United - at Dagenham & Redbridge

I just got a call from box office.

"You asked about a discount. Sorry we missed you and you should have received a further £13 discount and this is being  credited to your card"

The discount is because i am a men's 25/26 ST buyer

Great customer service. Well done CAFC ticket office

Chelsea have already announced that games will be played at Stamford Bridge. Palace can't play at Sutton United next season. The lights don't meet the TV requirements. Assume they will play all games at Selhurst Park.
