Bethell's scores in the IPL this season have been distinctly average - 14, 20, 5, 4, 27, 15 & 11. Jordan Cox has been at the IPL for the duration too but, apart from sub fielding, he has hasn't played a single game.lolwray said:I wouldn't select Bethell or Archer (when he returns) until they've played a couple of County games...yep I know call me old fashioned
The difference between the two is that Bethell's first allegiance should be to England. In Cox's case it is Essex because he isn't centrally contracted. The former pays a lot more than the latter but, in neither case, does the provider of their respective main source of income have a total say in where they play.
As in football, player power has taken over. The likes of Livingstone and Bairstow aren't shy in coming forward when it comes to moaning about being left out by England but their patriotism hasn't extended to being available to play for England all year round.
So why is it so important for a cricketer to be picked for England? Because it is doing so that elevates their standing in world cricket. How many England players have been bought at the IPL without playing for their country first? Had England not taken a punt on Bethell, he wouldn't have played in the IPL last season. 174 runs in 10 innings is hardly a ringing endorsement of being offered a contract by RCB but he is a work in progress.
The whole system is broke and the fact that the ECB elevates their own vanity project and executive bonuses above playing meaningful cricket in August rather says it all.5 -
Would love to see Jof come and play a couple of games for Sussex but the ECB won't let that happen. Ironically losing Robbo leaves us rather light on seamers.0
-
Bethell is to have a finger injury assessed out in India. So he might not even be fit for the Test anyway.0

He's already beaten the record for the number of sixes in an IPL series - currently on 65. The previous record was 59 by Chris Gayle. And he hasn't stopped yet!0 -
Have always liked Dizzy!

I see NZ are warming up for the 1st Test next week with a game against Ireland. At the close NZ are 361/5.
Any chance England have a warm up match before next week or are we going to do the same as we did for the Ashes & go in cold 🙄2 -
Just not a comparable scenario as all bar one member of the squad have been playing red ball cricket for 2 monthsgolfaddick said:I see NZ are warming up for the 1st Test next week with a game against Ireland. At the close NZ are 361/5.

Although I agree with how shocking our preparation for test matches is, if you have been in the it's too f*****g hot (global warming thread) I doubt it would apply this time around.golfaddick said:I see NZ are warming up for the 1st Test next week with a game against Ireland. It's not a "warm up", it's a Test.golfaddick said:I see NZ are warming up for the 1st Test next week with a game against Ireland. At the close NZ are 361/5.

Ben Stokes set to move down to No7 and Jamie Smith up to No6 in England's batting order. Brendon McCullum says no final decision taken but England "leaning towards" the switch, with the skipper slipping down the order after a difficult period with the bathttps://t.co/2diDydwUYN

It's like going into a new season with your opponents having pre-season matches whereas you've been having little 5-a-sides on the training ground.

So, you're suggesting we should play a test match before every test series?golfaddick said:

The squad have been playing regular competitive county cricket which has given player like smith to rebuild confidence levels.golfaddick said:

England are not going into this under cooked and I can’t see how the 5 a side comment compares to competitive county championship games.0 -
It's typical that after the hot and dry weather recently, the 1st Test will be cool and wet. Thursday's forecast looks awful, while the other days, including Friday when I'm going, are likely to have some rain.4

Women’s team having a nightmare against India in the third and deciding T20. Chasing 181 they’re 38-3 off 5.10

i got sent a video clip of some fielding off her own bowling by Sophie Ecclestone that I can't put in to words at how genuinely pathetic it was0

Was awful and will overshadow the good run out she did.oohaahmortimer said:i got sent a video clip of some fielding off her own bowling by Sophie Ecclestone that I can't put in to words at how genuinely pathetic it was
On a more positive note, Capsey is motoring here, 29* (11)0 -
England end up winning with 9 balls to spare. Capsey (whose place in the WC lineup wasn't guaranteed) with a sublime 82 (43) and Knight with a great 70* (42)1

Generally speaking, the women's fielding was much better than it has been recently. Not fantastic but better. That Ecclestone miss was awful but, perhaps, not as bad as this one in this season's IPLoohaahmortimer said:i got sent a video clip of some fielding off her own bowling by Sophie Ecclestone that I can't put in to words at how genuinely pathetic it was

Here's Ecclestone's direct hit anyway: https://x.com/bbctms/status/2061875208236028140?s=202

How is Bashir still getting in the squad - he’s nowhere near good enough. Ahmed offers more with the ball and is a pretty handy batsman.3
