Henry Crocombe pulled out of Sussex's current Championship game to cover for Ollie Robinson.

Well the future of England's middle order looks bright. Double tons for Jordan Cox and James Coles in the champ.

Yet I’m sure Rew will play next week

Sensible option could be Cox and Rew and dropping Smith.

    Won't happen though.

It looks to be Cox for the second test.

Delighted for Crocombe on a personal level but as a Sussex fan it's very annoying as we're pretty threadbare already!

Weird that Potts has been ignored. 8-66 today.

Yeah I don't think Farbrace expected to be having to bring in Dom Goodman who's not bowled a ball in first team cricket this season!

Would be very surprised if Henry made his debut yet tho.

And Sam Cook. Plenty of better options as much as I rate Cromcombe.

Cook is injured, broke his wrist. Potts I thought was the obvious pick but this management has clearly seen something they like with Crocombe.

So a likely attack of Tongue,Archer,Fisher and Rehan Ahmed. Can't see them playing Crocombe or Baker.

Not sure Ahmed will get a game, he was allowed to play in the Championship when the ECB pulled other players out

Rehan Ahmed won’t be playing. Baker will play instead of Fisher.

It's amazing how shonky our attack suddenly looks without Robinson

Robinson and Atkinson took 14 wickets between them at Lords.
Replacing both of them as well as losing Stokes was always going to be difficult

Poor Bashir. Despite being hailed as England's number one spinner, the last time he was given an opportunity to bowl for his country was almost a year ago.

That bowling attack looks awful. Two rookies, and a bowler who hasn't bowled a single delivery in red ball since December.

If Smith plays and stays at 6, having Cox as a specialist batsman at 7 is a bit ridiculous. This is the sort of game where the now retired from red ball cricket Liam Dawson would be perfect, someone who can score runs but also bowl tidy overs to hold an end.

I know Jofra can hold a bat , but coming in at 8 may give him a nose bleed

Coles or Bess would be that but in form

Confirmed that Smith won’t play. James Rew to come in and keep

Only took Smith's Mrs giving birth for it to happen!

Daft though that Rew will keep and bat at 6, with Cox being a specialist bat at 7.

Indeed which of them is the better keeper?

Sure Rew must be adequate and Cox is a brilliant fielder

Cox didn't keep in any of the last five Lions matches he played in with Rew, Mayes and Moores all taking the gloves instead. He kept for Essex in his one and only red ball game this season but rarely gets the opportunity even in franchise cricket which is probably as much to do with his ability as a fielder as any perceived weaknesses keeping.

There is one other aspect though to consider. The chances of breaking a finger are increased as a keeper especially if a player doesn't do the job regularly. Some players are prone to doing that anyway and Cox has had several periods out of the game due to doing just that including missing his England debut.
  • AA, this is really sound and relevant. I think Cox will bat 6
