should we just lock people in their homes, so the self indulgent marathon runs can do every day
Greenwich already closes for the Greenwich half marathon as well as the London marathon.

There isn't a Greenwich half-marathon. There was a rubbish attempt at one about 15 years ago (Run to the Beat) which moved to Wembley then mercifully disappeared.

There's The Big Half, which takes place in September - starts near Tower Bridge, does a chunk of the marathon course backwards and ends at the Cutty Sark and closes the one-way system off to most traffic. Seems to work pretty well - not massively busy like the marathon is, the buses keep running through Greenwich and you can even nip across the road a lot of the time. I don't think it locks people in their homes...
The buses hardly run, because of the traffic jam it causes all the way back to New Cross, the road was closed off and the bus I was on terminated just about past Maze hill, walked to the Charlton Womans game from
there there , the pavements littered with loads of drinks bottles , get back after the game hardly easier as they
where still clearing away the road barriers.
The club should have had the match moved - might be one for  @castrust to feed back to the club as the date's set a year in advance (September 6th this year).
Noted, thanks. That’s the opening weekend of the WSL which will be a big occasion for us - not sure if we have the opportunity to request a home or away fixture.

It does feel over the top. There are dozens of grass roots marathons around that people aren't aware of, if they really do want to run 26 miles. Some are as cheap as £20, if you don't mind doing laps or out and backs.
Most people want to be a part of one of the Worlds most famous marathons. It’s not just the distance, but the event.

The week before normally has the Southampton marathon, with relatively easy entry, but I have no interest in doing two laps of Southampton…
I’ve run a few and nothing even comes close to how special London is, an incredible event to be part of

Exactly this. Its not the distance so much, its more the event which is a mind blowing experience.

I do think the 2 days will dilute it quite a bit. Cannot see the atmosphere being the same across 2 days.

I'm wondering how it's going to impact the volunteer side of things and charities that in previous years would have quite happily had a cheer point on the Sunday for their runners all of a sudden might have runners on both days.

Same logic that people go overseas on holiday and dont just pop to Clacton.

I hope the EFL fixture computer has been programmed to avoid CAFC home game over that weekend.

Not when lots of people don't realise other marathons (or holidays in your comparison) are available.

Also by spreading crowds over 2 days it may no longer be The Marathon of Europe, and arguably beyond.

I’m pretty certain that the vast majority of people contemplating the London Marathon would be fully aware that other marathons or distance runs are available.

its simply that they are not world famous events on one of the greatest marathon courses in the world.

It’s the event more than the distance.

I’ve been lucky enough to run the London Marathon twice. The draw is the crowds, the sights, the size of the field and the medical and logistical support.
Running a small marathon where you might be on your own for several miles has no appeal to the mass of people running London.
    And it’s my local marathon.

Its supposedly a 1 off, although if its a success itl probably end up being 2 days and both at the current capacity. There was over a million people applied this year.

In 98 I ran it in 5 hours 7 minutes.  It'd probably take 5 days now.

    I’ve done it twice. 5hrs 25 first time round , 4 hrs 25 next.

At that rate of progression, statically I will win it in a world record time if I can get three more ballot places.

    Certainly something to aim for.
