Heracles Almelo sells Ivan Mesik to Charlton Athletic; defender signs for 4 years with London club

For the players of Heracles Almelo, the preparation for a season in the Kitchen Champion Division has begun. In this live blog we will keep you informed of all developments around the Almelo club.

Heracles sells Ivan Mesik to Charlton Athletic

Following in the footsteps of Brian De Keersmaecker, Ivan Mesik is also leaving for the English Championship. Heracles Almelo sells the 25-year-old Slovakian defender to Charlton Athletic FC.

Mesik has signed a contract for four seasons. Heracles receives a fee. As usual, no announcements will be made about the amount. The defender was still under contract with Heracles until mid-2028.

A good deal for the Almelo club. He picked up Mesik two years ago from Pescara in the Italian Serie C. Together with teammate Lorenzo Milani, who did not make a convincing impression at Heralces. Mesik succeeded very well.

He played 71 games for Heracles and scored three goals. He also managed to select himself for the Slovakian selection.

Mesik was examined last weekend at the London club and completed all the formalities regarding his transfer on Monday. Charlon ended last season as the number 19 in the Championship.

    Reaction Mesik:

In Heracles' press release, the departer says the following: "I am very happy with this step, but I also realize that I could not have made it without Heracles. In Almelo I had the best period of my career so far. I want to thank my teammates and the members of the staff for their help and the fact that I felt like a valued member of the selection from day one."

Mesik continues: "The support from the fans was also great, every game. Thanks to all those factors, I was able to grow as a person in the past two years and make the step I can now take as a footballer."

"Last season didn't go as expected, but I'm convinced that Heracles Almelo will return to the Eredivisie. Wherever the club belongs. Preferably in the new season. I crossed my fingers for that!"

    Faber on Mesik:

Technical director Ernest Faber is full of praise for Mesik. "Ivan has always distinguished himself with his professionalism, mentality and full commitment to Heracles Almelo. This transfer is a great step in his career and an opportunity that he wanted to take advantage of."

Clearly not be messed with if he's selecting himself for the national side.

I’m guessing the eredivise is a similar standard to the championship, bar two or three of the top clubs?
Heracles were relegated from eredivise last season

On that note, is it Mess-ik or May-sik?

no idea but looks good to me - we're going down the paraguayan defensive formula - a centre back 3 of nightclub bouncers

Sounds like the upgrade needed on Gillesphey which addresses a major weakness in the squad. Great start to the summer business and hopefully with another LB or LWB in we won’t need to play TC or Bell out of position at all next season which solves half our problems!

His photos look like we have scouted him from Slovakian Serial Killers United…..

If someone showed me the picture on the Heracles article and said they have just dug up his garden and found a load of body parts I’d believe them!

I hope he's a better Ryan Inniss. I love a complete nutter at the back.

I know it’s stupid, but I absolutely love this.

Peter Garland is a natural. He’s got that David Brent energy to a tee.
Shout out for Ivan’s bemused look at the camera halfway through too.
    Great stuff.

He describes himself as aggressive and loves a tackle

Sichenje, Jones, Mesík as a back 3 could be pretty tasty
Be perfect for Scum away. The rest of the time lets have 2 of them plus one of Bell and Ramsay. Better mix and allows us to rotate a bit.

Welcome Sir. Hope you smash it - and a few (opposition striker) ankles - here!

Instead of Billy or as well as?

Left footers are like double sockets, you can never have too many.

If we do end up adding Koumetio as well then I assume we're looking at Ivan/Josh on the left, Amari'i/Billy LCB, doubling down on the asymmetrical back 5 with the LWB staying deeper / dropping into LB and the RWB pushing up to RW?

The last thing we need at LWB is a CB... Desperately require some width and pace down either flank. I would guess Koumetio was a red herring put out there to get this deal over the line. Ivan/Bell will LCB and Gillesphey will be off.

He seems to be as comfortable in either, I've seen him described as an LB by some and CB by others. Ramsay and Bell are both players who can do WB and CB roles, I imagine Mesik is envisioned similarly. I don't know if Koumetio was just a red herring or not but I wouldn't be surprised if we’re not still after another left sided defender, especially if Gillesphey really is headed for the exit.

    At a guess, I'd say between £500-700k?

Heracles paid €300k for him in 2024.

Next season when other managers play 'respectful' quote bingo regarding us 'always a tough place to go', 'they make it difficult', it will have real meaning.
I am glad we're doubling down on kitchen sink and not rushing to be all Andrew Lloyd Webber, cementing our identity as being a bastard team to play against, and going for the grind in every match.
Everything I've seen so far I love the guy, and I already love Collins, so much looking forward to the vibe next season.
Looks like Ryan Innes was just the warm up for what's to come.

I would guess he is like Ramsay and Bell – good emergency cover at wingback, but you don't want them playing there all the time.

ed - I totally missed this quote from NJ that he'll provide an option down the left-hand side. But then again, Ivan says NJ knows he's a central defender, so who knows.
