Cawley's put up more NJ quotes. Doesn't completely rule out any of the loanees returning. Talks about attacking signings taking the longest and being the most expensive.

Hopefully a good sign we'll spend the bulk of our budget on strengthening the attacking areas.

Does make me wonder if we'll see a surprise in the attacking department? I read it as if we're willing to spend a pretty substantial fee on someone in that area.

Yeah, saying the most exciting players tend to ‘cost the money’ and ‘most highly paid’ gave me a similar hope.

Got a feeling Nathan hasn't given up on Apter as much as some have on this thread...
I believe he will come good and was disappointed when he was loaned out in January. He needs a run in the team to get his confidence back. His performances in August and against Boro at home last season showed he can play in this league

‘Instead he talked about their spending going up “incrementally”. Jones added: “We’re quite prepared for that. The owners have always been good and backed us, in terms of everything.’

Backs up what he said in his interview with Charlotte.

With the sort of character Jones is, if the board had not supported him with the budget he expected - do you think he would be saying this?

Let me just repeat that ‘the owners have been good and backed us, in terms of everything’

You may not think that’s the right way to go about things - and they should chuck more money at it - but it definitely should draw a line under any nonsense that he has fallen out with the board because the budget has been cut.

Andy Hessenthaler was near me at the ground. So either he is replacing Doc in midfield or more likely, he was there in a scouting capacity for Gills.

Could see a couple of youngsters head his way.
    Replacing Jones as manager.

NJ comments about certain youngsters 'being a lot closer than people think' I took to mean that they will be in and around the first eleven at the start of the season, Fuller and Gough certainly but Dixon, Asiimwe, Kanu and Mbick, maybe. If seven players were quoted as arriving, then one of those would surely be a replacement for Bree/Clarke's position as right wing back, which leaves four, I can't see more than one forward coming in which leaves the midfield as the prime area to be reinforced. Seven in would surely mean seven out, Adhame already loaned for the season, Gillie gone permanently, interesting to see who else may leave.

Mwamba would be ahead of Dixon, Asimwe, Kanu and the injured Mbick.

Maybe, but only as a winger in a 433

I did not see a whole lot of slaughtering going on yesterday. More like two mongrel strays fighting over a bone.

Encouraging that Nathan Jones clearly recognises our weakness from last season, which was struggling to counter or attack with any pace and urgency. Sounds like he’s trying to correct that as a priority.

Is the Redmond trial, just Nathan helping out an ex player by saying it’s an official trial so his agent can create some interest, when in reality he’s just training with us. Clutching at straws here. I know money is tight compared to other big spenders in this league but it’s a signing that wouldn’t be very inspiring. Perhaps NJ would deploy him elsewhere like the genius Coady switch to midfield.
On paper the bloke seems like a busted flush however he is only 32 has played at the highest level if he gets a full pre season in who knows he could rekindle his spark. I learnt from the Coady signing not to doubt NJ in this respect as I was gutted when we signed him thinking it a total waste of space
You’re right, as fans we’ve all watched a lot of football but we know nothing compared to a pro manager with a successful track record and recruitment experts like Chapple. We had the 3rd lowest player budget in the league last year and it’s not going to be much higher this year. This is the pond we’re fishing in and NJ and Chapple know how to get value for money.
Redmond has played 22 championship games in the past 3 seasons. If this is the level that we are at while "relegation rivals" can throw millions at players...
NJ may be doing NR a favour getting him a pre season for a move elsewhere

Portsmouth are dropping 6 million on a player. This is what we are competing with.
Well, more like £5m if the reports are to be believed and no word on what amount of that would be add-ons and conditionals.
    6 million plus add ons.

Even if it was 5 the principle is the same. Portsmouth should be our competition next season and if they dropping this much its cause for concern
Looking at his stats, he’s hardly prolific! £6m seems a lot- makes you wonder what Kelman is worth, having scored more goals at a higher standard!!
The concern is if he’s not prolific that’s more of a concern in that if that’s what you get for 6 million what are we going to be able to get?
Or, Almeria take Portsmouth for a ride.

We had much more success when playing with out and out wingers because we will never dominate possession but with a solid defence to absorb pressure with your Doc's and Coventry dropping back aswell, we can counter attack to great effect.

If Redmond can chip with assists and goals then that isn't an issue with me. Plus Apter might flourish as a winger.
Apter couldn’t flourish as a winger in league 1 last season, a goal against Dartford doesn’t change anything. We will be looking for better at attacking RWB than him (we won’t be playing with wingers, it will be the same system as before so it’s the Thierry Small role)
So just right him off then?

A goal against Dartford doesn't make him a world beater but if the system changes, does he not have a chance at performing better in his preferred role?

I think the biggest thing for Apter and many of the lads who’re on the periphery of the squad is how they react to what NJ has said to them and obviously also how they perform. There will of course be the issue that NJ also wants to strengthen the squad so some may not get much of a chance to show off any change.

Apart from when he was very good against Watford, Bristol City and Leicester as a RWB and was our player of the month for August. He's perfectly capable of carrying out the role, his output dipped when he stopped putting in the effort to track back and that cost him his place after QPR where he decided he only wanted to go forward and then against Millwall where he didn't have much defending to do and wasted his opportunity when he had the scope to attack. The things Rob Apter can do are entirely up to Rob Apter, it's just a question of whether or not he's come back willing to do what Jones wants him to. I think he can, he just has to switch his brain on

The system isn’t changing. He couldn’t perform in his preferred role in league 1, can he perform in the attacking RWB role for us? He’s got the talent but if he isn’t willing to work for it then it won’t get him anywhere.

Maybe we will keep him around as an option for when we want to change to wingers in game and maybe the odd run out at wing back - a bit like Fevrier’s role last season. Does Apter have the right attitude to be happy with that limited role? I’m not sure he does, so I’d be surprised if he’s still here in September

Cawley’s substack is great value. So important that he started it as we have so few journos reporting on us. Him and Louis on the pod is always a good listen.
I subscribed for the whole of last season and I believe it’s great value. I hope he’s making enough for it to be viable. Does he do a millwall, palace version too?

He calls it the ‘South London press Charlton Athletic edition’ so I wondered. But he does also go to all our games so can’t be going to theirs as well!
