National Anthem

Keep GSTK, but speed it up like Valley Floyd Road as sung by the Valley faithful!3
-
No-one can figure out when to start off the opening drumroll. It just needs a click track, that'll fix it right up0
-
I think our National Anthem also qualifies for the 'worst ever song lyric' thread.3

Land of Hope and Glory was actually tried in 70s when Don Revie became manager. It was a total failure which certainly didn't get people going. To me Jerusalem would be only option but I have no desire to change. Bohemian Rhapsody, Wonderwall as a national anthem - give me a break please.Croydon said:I like it our anthem but agree that Jerusalem would sound better pre match. Even Land of Hope and Glory would get people going more I think5 -
Blimey I said Wonderwall as a joke. Perhaps I should have said Sweet Caroline to make it more obvious?4
-
I think any anthem will be problematic for some group or other.
GSTK. Upsets republicans and atheists
Jerusalem. Upsets atheists. Likely to trigger those that would only hear a song named after the capital of Israel.
Land of Hope and Glory. Upsets those that only see a downside in patriotism and British history.
Wonderwall - see above 😉
GSTK has some upside. It annoys all of the above and the Scots, and everyone knows the first verse. Let’s stick with it.1 -
Especially Liechtenstein who use the same dirge we dofattmatt said:
There are ONLY 4 national anthems. Apart from England, USA and France all the others are literally the same song!Stig said:There are three, maybe four, decent national anthems. The rest are appalling. Time to stop this nonsense.0 -
Oh blimey, let's hope they don't get to the final as well......rananegra said:2 -
Thank you, I think I started that thread and got a right kicking but it still remains GSTQ GSTK are both shite!jimmymelrose said:Before starting a thread I suggest searching it to see if it’s been done before.
This discussion has been done to death. It’s always much better to do a search, and then if you have something new to say, bump up the old thread.

I would rather sing this as it refers to country and not to King or Queen:
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.3 -
GStQ/K is an absolute dirge largely compounded by our National football following being too coked/pissed up, to slow down to, and follow with any competence.
1. "La Marseillaise"
2. "Il Canto degli Italiani"
3. "Lip Up Fatty"1 -
I'm amused by Argentina's national anthem as it has several distinct musical movements before it stops ... Then it starts again with a song that is essentially a different tune completely.
All the while the opposition are wondering if they're playing three or four at the back and by the time the game starts they're one down, but still wondering how the melodic shift from martial fanfare to crescendo and back to rhythmic march works.1 -
I would keep our National Anthem but speed it up. It sounds awful when sung slowly, as the woman did in today's Grand Prix.0

Nothing wrong with the National Anthem. I don't believe in God, but so what?
It astounds me why people seem to spend so much time thinking of things to run this country down about.
God Save The King.8 -
Yeah I think it would be a decent choice, but spoiled by the fact a lot of people would just go "erm... why are England playing the Rugby World Cup song?" now.Stuart_the_Red said:I would rather sing this as it refers to country and not to King or Queen:I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,

Maybe just have all national anthems as instrumentals.0
-
Because the song is nothing whatsoever to do with 'this country', it's about one person and that's it. As a proud Englishman, I want an anthem that actually mentions some of the great things about our country, not one that conflates our country with one person.Off_it said:Nothing wrong with the National Anthem. A cheerful National Anthem would be 'Walking on Sunshine'.
Catchy, easy to sing, and a good reflection of the national weather.0 -

England doesn't have a National Anthem, if you're talking about God Save The King that is the Anthem for the UK & the tune is also used by Liechtenstein for their National Anthem.fattmatt said:

I live in Scotland but I support England!1

I'm a traditionist.
My tradition is to mute all national anthems and sing Land of hope and glory when England play.
It worked last night and I will do the same for the Norway game.
Jerusalem would be great with it stirring lyrics but we need to change Je-ru-sa-lem to Glas-ton-bu-ry
And did those feet in ancient time,Walk upon England's mountains green:And was the holy Lamb of NatureOn England's pleasant pastures seen!And did the Countenance Divine,Shine forth upon our clouded hills?And was Glastonbury builded here,Among these dark Satanic Mills?Bring me my Bow of burning gold:Bring me my Arrows of desire:Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:Bring me my Chariot of fire!I will not cease from Mental Fight,Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:Till we have built GlastonburyIn England's green & pleasant Land.
That would be fucking brilliant 👏🏻5 -
Type your commentI give you a toast, ladies and gentlemen
I give you a toast, ladies and gentlemen
May this fair land we love so well
In dignity and freedom dwellThough worlds may change and go awry
While there is still one voice to cryThere'll always be an England
While there's a country lane
Wherever there's a cottage small
Beside a field of grainThere'll always be an England
While there's a busy street
Wherever there's a turning wheel
A million marching feetRed, white and blue
What does it mean to you?
Surely you're proud, shout it aloud
Britons, awakeThe empire too, we can depend on you
Freedom remains
These are the chains
Nothing can breakThere'll always be an England
And England shall be free
If England means as much to you
As England means to meRed, white and blue
What does it mean to you?
Surely you're proud, shout it aloud
Britons, awakeThe empire too, we can depend on you
Freedom remains
These are the chains
Nothing can breakThere'll always be an England
And England shall be free
If England means as much to you
As England means to me
