This is the thing i can't understand. Surely Martinez knows that Ramos was a better option up front for them, he even brought him on in their last game and he scored a late winner. So why keep him on the bench for the entire game?North Lower Neil said:
The mad thing is that Fernando Santos had done the hard work at the last World Cup, dropped Ronaldo one knockout game and had him as a sub the other.lordromford said:
One of my sixth form students is Portuguese and he’s been absolutely raging that Ronaldo has apparently been undroppable for the last couple of years. He tells me that his whole family and every Portuguese person he knows is frustrated with Ronaldo. They love what he’s done in the past, but they think his influence has been detrimental to the team recently.Fortune 82nd Minute said:If I was a Portuguese fan, I'd be furious Ronaldo stayed on to the end. Was it a Testimonial match for him?At the beginning of the World Cup he said to me that the only chance Portugal had was if Ronaldo got injured in the group stage and couldn’t play again. The fact that his selection is keeping younger forwards with potential on the bench is what annoys him the most. His consistent verdict has been “Ronaldo doesn’t play for Portugal, he plays for Ronaldo.”
Then Martinez comes in and whether he was told Ronaldo plays or he's decided himself, made him undroppable.again, wasting any chance a good Portugal squad had in both Euro2024 and this World Cup.
Was he told by the Portuguese FA that Ronaldo had to start because of sponsors or something?
The end result is that Portugal fail to deliver yet again and now Martinez has resigned. And the laughable thing in all this is that after the game Ronaldo didn't even say he's now retiring from international football, only that he will have a think about his future.
Just retire from international football, do 1 more season in Saudi to get your 1,000 goals (he's on 976), as we all know that's the only reason he is still playing, and then retire completely by which time you'll be 42.Stop it! You'll make him cry.0 -
Has Trump decided how much the US team beat Belgium by yet?10

Delighted to see the USA go out after those awful shenanigans with the suspended red card. I hope their exit doesn't see that all swept away but rather fear it will.4

Love Lukaku doing the Trump dance when he scored 😂13

It’s always good to see the host nations go out as it hopefully starts to free up more tickets for the teams still in it.Athletico Charlton said:Delighted to see the USA go out after those awful shenanigans with the suspended red card. this time around it looks like they’ve had an easier ride to get this far and this Trump red card fiasco just makes it look like the sooner they go out the better for everyone including them.

Remarkable what pinning a photo of Trump in a dressing room will do to galvanise the opposition.5

The Belgian Trump dance is quality.
At least we can now get back to being the most disliked country in the tournament again with the Septics out.3 -

He has a shitty attitude & England always seem to play worse when he's in the team
Just my view, but I think he's massively overrated, both individually & as part of the team.13 -

I watched the build-up to the game on FOX Sports and it was a real American flag-shagging cheesefest. Then they got battered. Oof. Unfortunately VAR could not award them a penalty for freedom.
Their grassroots system is poor. Unless you're a rich kid then you've got practically no chance of getting anywhere. Meanwhile the rest of the world's 'soccer' teams grew up playing on the streets in working working class communities and local clubs. In the US, you have 'soccer pathways'. Whatever happened to the American dream.
Also, why do they insist on calling themselves the USMNT? As if "the US men's team" would leave everyone confused, wondering whether Belgium had just beaten the US men's non-national team, or the US men's regional office.7 -
I felt slightly sorry for the US players, as they were put in an impossible position. They would have known what the rest of the world felt about the Trump Balogun intervention, and how motivated the Belgians would be.
Belgium use Lukaku off the bench, and didn't even bring De Bruyne on, as you need good legs against the athletic US side. Unlike Portugal where Ronaldo runs the show, that's how you use legends.
Indeed I'm sure it'll benefit KDB in the QF, as he'll be fresh, and better suited for the slower paced Spanish style.5 -
Quote from ex CEO of UEFA, Lars Christer-Olsson.
Kindergarten and Infantino seems apt.
"I think seriously that FIFA has to think a lot about not becoming a kindergarten for clowns because the peace prize was stupid. This is dangerous because it interferes in the rules of the game and what football is.
This is why this matter really is important, because you shouldn't be a playground for people like these guys, because it is jeopardising the credibility of the entire sport."

Trump has announced Belgium are 2 weeks away from developing the Nuclear Bomb.
Invade Belgium tomorrow and get American reinstated in the world cup.5 -
Not much we can do as a nation other than condemn this woman but I’d hope if ever she feels the need to visit this country or any other in Europe then it’s her that’s given the middle finger. Thank you to Spain and Portugal?
I had been awake since Sunday morning 9 am and my insomnia kicked in big time as during Monday I was hyped up after watching England's win. After being out from early on Monday I was going to sleep in the afternoon but the 4 hours and 38 minutes of Fery v Dimitrov which went to the wire kept me going.
When I put the Spain v Portugal game on I didn't last long before I was in the land of nod Zzzzz.
Buenas noches/Boa noite

How good is Balogun, actually? I have not watched a US game in full. Mate of mine is antsy with him for choosing the States over England, but looking at his career record I’d be surprised if he’d even get near the current squad.0
