Lovely man, great player. It was my priviledge to meet him on the evening he lost his record test score in 1994. He recounted his own innings of 365 not out, his first test hundred amazingly, over a few rum and cokes in his hotel bedroom after the hotel closed their bar. The half a dozen of us present would not forget that time.

Had the pleasure of meeting him and all the others of the great West Indian cricket team. RIP a true gentleman who spoke so humbly, he made me smile when he spoke to me and the wife, and overheard her say to me who was that, that put a great genuine smile on his face as he walked away.3

The greatest all rounder for those cricket fans of my generation and older. He could have earned a place in any eleven for his batting alone, quick bowling alone and slow left arm bowling alone both orthodox and chinamen. He could do the lot to test standard.
A truly great player and a decent man as well by all accounts. I was looking forward to putting him on the Celebrities Still Alive thread at the end of the month but sadly not to be.3 -

Only saw him play once v England at the Oval in 1963 (I hopped off school for the playing days), he was already a 'legend' though he had quite a quiet game so fas as I recall. (This Windies team under Frank Worrell was the prototype for the great teams that played later under Clive Lloyd)
Remember mostly his bowling run up, left arm both spin and pace, a languid, liquid action as smooth as silk .. R I P Sir Garfield
