To be fair Golfie most of our forwards were feeding on scraps. I'm sure someone on here would have the stats for chances created in the second half of last season.golfaddick said:
Just needs to add goals to his game. And learn how to attack balls in the box.Addicksi said:This is the season Miles properly arrives if he's going to I reckon. As a previous poster said he's over the injuries and trusts his body again. I noticed a difference in his game after Dykes arrived and he seemed to discover some housery and used his physique to bully defenders.
Then we might have a striker worth his salt.3 -
He's had one good/decent season at League One that could be a sign of potential but could equally be a bit of a fluke and he's going for 3 million pounds (possibly more.)cafc_harry said:Kyrell Lisbie to Millwall seems to be done for (apparently) £3m increasing to 6. The money flying around in the championship is eye watering compared to when we were last established at this level. I think that gives some context as to why we haven’t been majorly active yet this window, we can’t compete with those numbers and need to be sensible where we do choose to spend.
I know that's just how it goes now and being too stubborn in making sure we spend "sensibly" could well end up costing us (irony alert) but it does seem pretty absurd what the "normal" level of spending is now.1 -
Interesting if you consider that fee and add ons as a benchmark, what or where would that leave possible future interest in Kanu or even Mbick.thenewbie said:

Abu Kamara of Hull City was born on 21 July 2003 (age 23).
Abu Kamara, born on 21 July 2003 (age 22), is an English striker whose senior career has been shaped almost entirely at Hull City. His market value is around £3.5m,

Also seen on a Scottish football site that Hibernian have offered Dykes 2year deal .. but most likely wages will be lot less he will get in England where he may have to settle for one year ??0

Some very rose-tinted glasses here looking at Dykes, go to any match thread at the end of the season and everyone is calling him a donkey, now the consensus seems to be let's have him back, and on improved terms!
Personally would rather give Leaburn a go ahead of him, seen as though their goal return is more or less the same, and I actually think Leaburn is stronger in the air.
Dykes' target man play was actually pretty poor IMO and mostly ended up with him on his arse.
I'd take him as an option in the squad, but if the plan is to start him 30+ games then I'm concerned.9 -
Maybe you need to take off your turd tinted glasses.LittleAddick said:Some very rose-tinted glasses here looking at Dykes, go to any match thread at the end of the season and everyone is calling him a donkey, now the consensus seems to be let's have him back, and on improved terms!

He was very good for his first 10 games or so.
Dropped off in second half of his loan period for sure, but he is definitely not a donkey ffs.17 -
Not a massive fan of dykes returning but he done 10x more for us last season than Leaburn. Simple as that.

We were watching different players then. He was a real handful whenever he played and suffered as much as everyone else did from a lack of service for meLittleAddick said:Some very rose-tinted glasses here looking at Dykes, go to any match thread at the end of the season and everyone is calling him a donkey, now the consensus seems to be let's have him back, and on improved terms!

I don’t think that many of us were blown away by our January Championship loans, yet those “uninspiring” players including Dykes made the difference between staying up and relegation. The step up between league one and The Championship is big. We have a lot of players with the potential to make it but last season flitted in and out of that. This window we’ve signed a few more gambles in the foreign lads and we now need quality and as a bare minimum decent experience at that level. I would suggest that McNamara, Grant and Dykes should he sign are all good solid choices. We need to get real. Haarland and Rodri ain’t coming.17

Dykes is ok. Maybe he flourishes in a new system, with some crosses etc. For me the lack of enthusiasm comes from wanting to see us evolve, even a little bit. Last season was a joyless grind towards the end, and getting the band back together feels a bit bleak. Dykes is only one factor in that though, and I trust Jones.5

A simple question. If Dykes is so good why isn’t there a long line of top Championship clubs queuing up to buy him?Answer is because he is a journeyman.4

Leaburn is useless. Does not use his size and extremely lazy. I have heard enough about this could be his season .LittleAddick said:Some very rose-tinted glasses here looking at Dykes, go to any match thread at the end of the season and everyone is calling him a donkey, now the consensus seems to be let's have him back, and on improved terms!

I’m not sure anyone here is describing him as being ‘so good’ mate.DennisBooth said:A simple question. If Dykes is so good why isn’t there a long line of top Championship clubs queuing up to buy him?Answer is because he is a journeyman. He’d do a job for us for sure. You’ve made that bit up5 -
Jones seems to rate Dykes otherwise why would the club offer him a contract?0

It’s been Leaburn’s breakout season for about 3 years now apparently.redbuttle said:

not sure why people seem to stick with the hope that he’ll suddenly come good when his return to this point has been so poor.Dykes was twice the player last season that Leaburn was for me8 -
Although I don't rate either that much surely Leaburn is the future. If not then sell him & re-invest the money for a new striker.21cws said:Not a massive fan of dykes returning but he done 10x more for us last season than Leaburn. Simple as that.2 -

He’s 22. How much further in to the future are we waiting for him to realise his potential?golfaddick said:

The ‘Dykes is shit’, ‘No he’s not, Leaburn is shit’ argument is not the most edifying thing I’ve seen on here lately.15
-
Not sure if significant but Dykes has just “liked” the official Charlton Insta post re:today’s friendly at AFCW1
-
I think he got unlucky last season. Just as he was coming into form, using his body more and getting praise from people who had previously criticised him he then got benched because we signed Dykes. Then NJ tried playing them together and his form nosedived. If you go back to some of the match threads you’ll see plenty of comments about him starting to use his physicality. He’s always been good with his feet, if he can harness his physicality again he could be brilliantTheHerminator said:

Dykes is a decent championship standard target man that creates problems for defenders by being a real physical nuisance to them. He undeniably improved us last season. Would I be happy with him re-signing? Eh, I’d have preferred to have got that contract wrapped up pre World Cup, if we had done I doubt we’d even be squabbling about it.10
-
Bristol City now have Adebayo (ex Luton) on trial and I assume they have binned off Dykes. I don’t think he is as bad as people are making him out to be and could be a decent signing. I do worry if we sign him and redmond however, makes me wonder what kind of players we’re looking at. Not saying we will defo sign both but if redmond is playing today, I assume NJ is keen0
-
I think Nathan Jones wants an upgrade on the physicality offered by Charlton across the pitch and in front players, that certainly is not there. I have to say though that if Dykes arrives then one of the current forwards leaves, possibly Tanto and as Nathan Jones stated, 'to get another forward in something would have to give'.0

Leaburn clearly has talent and there is definitely a good player in there. He has decent pace, ball control, strength to go with his huge frame. But he doesn’t seem to make the right game decisions. His anticipation in the box doesn’t seem to quite be there, he doesn’t attack headers (in opposition box - he’s pretty good in our box at clearing them). He should bully defenders more. I honestly think that Danny Hylton should be getting a bit more out of him.
He’s had to step up a level as he’s developed though and he’s been beset with badly timed injuries. I don’t think we should be giving up on him yet. If it clicks there is such potential there.
Also, at his age Dykes was mid way getting 11 goals in 100 performances for Queen of the South.11 -
Compare his stats to Ivan Toney, one of the only players I can remember coming through as a target man at a young age.TheHerminator said:

Between 17 and 22 he was knocking around LG2/LG1 on various loans from Newcastle, scoring 24 goals or so.
From 22-24 he signed for Peterborough, and had a breakthrough, scoring 40 in two seasons.
He signed for Brentford at 24, his first taste of the Championship, and obviously went on to play at the highest level.
Miles has scored more Championship goals and had more Championship experience than Toney at his age. Last year was about not having an injury relapse, and getting to grips with the physicality of the championship, which he did pretty well.
Injuries/fitness might mean it doesn't work out, but if he's able to get his stamina up to keep the press going, I don't see how we wouldn't think his attributes aren't a benefit to our team at present, even if he's not a guaranteed starter.
