Best game you've seen at the Valley

The 7-6 was for me unforgettable as a 12 year old at the time,since then West Ham 4-4 Portsmouth 7-4,Middlesborough 6-6,how football has changed to the chess board we have today

To many to mention.......

For pure Charlton Athletic reasons 05/12/92 but highlights definitely Preston, Chelsea/Spurs (same season), West Ham, Ipswich, Millwall.....

The play off semi vs Ipswich. Possibly the bouncingest I've ever seen The Valley, great goal from Newts and I don't remember feeling the slightest bit nervous about the result. It seemed to me that it was our destiny to get promoted that year, and I think the rest of the stadium had the same feeling.

I was only 7 but the 4-3 against Southend in 1994 was a blinder! 

Ah yes that Southend game! Pardew with the winner?

And I think Southend's Chris Powell on the goal line but unable to stop it.

I'd probably go with the ipswich semi in 98 as well - there were loads of brilliant games between circa 95 and 05 and quite a few since but if i had to pick one, i think that was it.

Pretty certain Dicks retired pretty soon after…

Fantastic memories as all the games mentioned I was at from the 2-0 win over Derby with Clough in charge to the Doncaster semi final when the roof nearly came off after the early goal from Bielik when I celebrated with Rhoys Wiggins who had recently retired and was watching his first game since at the Valley.
Ironically we lost this game 2-3 but won on pens.

Beating Chelsea 4-2 is right up there for me with Parker pulling the strings plus another thrashing of Chelsea with the Ballon d'or winner Simonsen showing his class.

Unfortunately the excellent 3-2 win over Everton the league champions wasn't at the Valley or the Paul Williams brace against Man United when Ferguson was struggling.

Amongst the detritus there have been some amazing games which stay in the mind and hoping we will have more to add to, this and coming seasons 🤞🏻

6-2 vs McMenemy’s cup winning Saints. Sept ‘76. Absolute domination, looked like we’d score every time we went forward 

Beating Arsenal 1-0 on New Years Day. Johannson with the goal, I think.

Nelson Vivas missing a penalty when under the cosh but hung on.

That season ending was so depressing though - two draws and a defeat in the last three games did for us. I can remember vividly the last game of that season (57 years ago! - I feel old all of a sudden!) at home to Preston, losing 1-0 with Bob Curtis and Harry Gregory both missing penalties. 

I can remember all those games vividly. Cardiff and Middlesbrough were also potentially in the promotion mix and there was a real feeling we  could get promoted to the top division. However Palace kept winning, whilst we only won one of our last four games. We finished 3rd in the table and Palace went up instead.

Three years later we were relegated to the old third division!

Too many draws that season, 2-0 up at selhurst (that was the year we walked to surrey) & just scrapped a draw. Went to Derby, played them off the park, hit the woodwork 4 times & lost 2-1. Talking of the Preston game we played them the first game the following season & again missed a penalty although we won 2-1 I think it was. That season we again finished third, unfortunately third from bottom.
