The problem is, FIFA didn't change when Blatter was forced out. It works on self interest, not the betterment of football. Really it needs to become a non profit organisation with presidents put forward for election by confederations who serve for 3 to 4 years with a basic salary. The current bunch of self serving crooks need purging first. Not an easy task to achieve.

It's all unravelling for poor old Gianni now.

"A senior adviser to Fifa president Gianni Infantino resigned hours after a third confederation opposed his plan to sell stakes in competitions to private investors. Carlos Cordeiro - a Fifa senior adviser for four years and 11 months - said Infantino's proposal was "a bad deal for football" and would "mortgage football's future".

The AFC siding with UEFA and CONCACAF means Infantino now can't get the majority he needs.

I'd be surprised now if we don't hear the remaining confederations saying the same, as no one will want to be the odd one out and look like fools that are only interested in a money grab.
FIFA will pull this idea over the next few days.
And make it sound like it's everyone elses fault.

Surely the money behind it will disappear if it is not truly a World Cup anymore.  You would think the other confederations know that so will be reluctant to sign up to it. Infantino has no shame so I doubt he will resign. He will just drop the idea and think of new ways to enrich himself further.
Doesn't need to resign, he's up for re-election next year. Currently standing unopposed but UEFA are trying to get PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to stand as they think he'd have a chance of winning
Given how the FIA President runs things, I question if Al-Khelaifi will be any better

I think the problem stems from the structure and accountability of the organisation.

Here’s the Asian statement. Pretty political in what it does and doesn’t say - power games brewing.

Given that majority of problems with Blatter and now Infantino are money-related, surely Al-Khelaifi would be better? He's already a billionaire so you'd expect less likely to be involved in corruption and doing things for personal gain.

I'm sick of hearing this 'grass roots' blx. It just doesn't work. We've got guys in our village trying to get an U-11 side together and their digging into their own pockets to make it work.  If there are agencies around distributing money for this to happen then they don't seem to make much noise about it.

I can't believe Infantino didn't see this coming. He's either a moron or he has something else up his sleeve. He's a corrupt, nose in the tough, sycophant (when it comes to the orangutan) but I don't think he's a moron. Maybe he has already given undertakings to the wider Trump family and is perhaps now caught between a rock and a hard place - I hope it is painfully uncomfortable for him - the white trainer with a suit wearing wanker.

That's what all the MAGA supporting morons said about Trump...'he can't be bought!' etc was a common cry. His accounts for his first year back in office (this term) were released last month. His companies made an eye watering 2.2 billion dollars...which hasn't stopped him wanting to get his filthy hands on football money. Greed has no bounds with some people.

I do like the irony of FAs, clubs and managers/players going on about football being for the people whilst at the same time charging extortionate ticket prices or earning millions a year which means attending matches is beyond the financial means of a lot of people.

Yep. Most grassroots clubs struggling and having to up subs etc. I’ve often spent money out of my own pocket for new equipment etc.

Andy Burnham has become the first leader of a major country to call for Infantino to go.

I always thought that with the football super league thing and was surprised how shocked those involved were by how much majority of football hated the idea. I think Infantino didn’t bother to actually ask around if it was a good idea and just listened to Trump/Kushner who all said it was brilliant.

I'm old enough to remember how relieved people were that the extremely corrupt Havelange had retired and surely this new Blatter chap couldn't be any worse. There's something wrong deep within the structure of FIFA that seems to result in grifters getting elected. So yes, I agree the crooks at the to need purging, but that won't be the end of it.

Just cause the conference say they don’t agree, doesn’t mean the individual associations will vote against though….

Because he has even more money to throw at it than Infanticido?

I can see stationery companies doing a roaring trade in large buff envelopes with $ symbols on.

Like rats leaving a sinking ship.  Wait for 3 associations to come out and effectively torpedo it then come out swinging after. Posturing to get a good role going forwards surely?

“Football belongs to the fans, not billionaires”

Quite a lot of irony if one looks at club football.

Maybe that’s where Infantfifa’s hubris stemmed from?

The plan is officially dead in the water. Surely not even Infantino has the hubris to now stand for re-election?

Sadly nothing will change in the long run... I'm all for democracy within FIFA, but equally feel that the only way FIFA can truly reform is by updating the voting system, and have something in place that doesn't give a country the same power as the likes of England ot France when their interest comes from money, rather than progressing the game.

FT reporting that Infantino has formally abandoned this plan saying 'become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place' he has not of course resigned and will almost certainly run for a new term but his power, reqch and support will have taken a battering and imo he will have to spend quite a few  of the billions FIFA just fleeced off the World Cup to get reelected
