Point well made, but inadequate investment now might end in relegation and a much harder sell.SELR_addicks said:queensland_addick said:As usual, the truth lies somewheref in the middle. The club hasn't denied that it's up for sale, but then every club is likely up for sale, at the right price!
What I don't understand is this. Friedman & Brener are supposedly worth a combined sum in the region of $5.5 Billion.
Why on earth do they even need to be seeking additional investment ?They're looking for a sale. The talk of 'additional investment' is claptrap and always has been.
I don’t get their strategy on any sale because valuation will sink if our team struggles.
We will also lose support if we play like we did last season.
Hard to be optimistic, but this is Charlton, who knows ?!Why do you think they're trying to sell now before the season begins?Bids ready for a next week deadline after all according to a journalist.

Boro didn't finish 19th though.fenaddick said:

But what will we call the horse?Henry Irving said:If the owners wanted to purely make money the would have been much better off just investing in Friedman's hedge fund or even a building society account.Instead, they are losing money, around £10m to £13m, a season with no sign of that changing.I think the more likely scenario is that they wanted some fun while having a possible pay day somewhere down the line. It's like four or six of us on here buying a racehorse. It costs us, say, £5k a year but we can afford that. We go to races, enjoy the thrill of being an owner while sipping champagne but it's not going to bankrupt us. It's money we can afford to spend just as Josh Friedman can lose £3m paSure, our horse might win a big race or go to stud and then we'd be quids in but it's not the whole plan.I believe the owners agreed the amount to which they would subsidize the club each year ie their version of £5k a year, and are sticking to it. The financial sustainability rules in the Championship don't allow them to pump in mega $$$ anyway. We're not Wrexham or Birmingham, we have a completely different business model and funding streams regardless of how rich our owners are.All the messaging, post Charlie, has been clear. Slow, steady growth and sustainability. It's not sexy and it requires patience. We can be happy with that or not but it looks nothing like a quick flip model, to my eyes anyway.7 -
So did David Mellor before slumming it at Chelsea.PragueAddick said:

It's just a killer - This has taken the shine of the whole thing - AGAIN!
But we have seen a lot worse -
You know what we really need - a Steve Mackenzie, an Andy Peake, a Colin Walsh - they'd sort this mess out.
Lennie did a lot more with less.
Out midfield is a massive issue - You just wonder how Jones is going to up if he has has the rug pulled on the plans1 -
I have increasingly come to the conclusion that the midfield is the major part of the problem which affects us both offensively and defensively. It isn't to say that players like Doc and Coventry can't play a role but we need a type of player who works but can create. I don't think JRC is good enough overall. I saw some signs that Carey could improve further and give us more. But at the moment there seems to be more questions than answers.mascot88 said:It's just a killer - This has taken the shine of the whole thing - AGAIN!

Doc is one of the best players off the ball in the league but sadly one of the worst on it and he doesn't score goals, which you do need from midfield. Coventry is a water carrier with nobody to carry it to. Again he doesn't score enough goals. It would be interesting to assess him with the right partner. I don't think Dobbo ticks all the boxes in terms of what we need, but he might be the closest we can get. We need to hijack the propsed move to Sheff Wed.
I would also question rather than criticise our coaching. The question would be, why do our promising young players not step up past high League One low Championship level? I don't expect them all to, but one or two! Leaburn for instance seems to have all the attributes needed and doesn't seem to have an attitude problem. He has had injury issues which might be a factor but I think he should be doing a lot better.3 -

Prague, we all know that and the point/joke was Richard hasn't switched from Fulham to Chelsea unlike Mellor.
I see you didn't defend Louis Mendez !3 -

last seasons squad budget was the second lowest in the Championship , so yes I believe we will have the same budget as last season.TheHerminator said:
Based on what? Carter has come out and said the budget this year is the same as last for the right players. You believe he’s just lying?golfaddick said:
I think they will continue to "pay the bills" but anything above that then No. Imo any new player purchases will have to be funded by player sales. Hence why the midfielder & right winger that NJ talked about last week have failed to materialise.SDAddick said:
So in the end everybody was kind of right. They're looking for investors or a takeover overall. Bids apparently due next week. Wouldn't be surprised if that gets pushed back given they've been at this for a year or so apparently.SELR_addicks said:
Are Charlton going to have new owners soon? Brener & Friedman have been looking for help/an exit for ages. They’ve got a new broker They’re looking for £50m+ but there are lots of clubs on market (that don’t involve dealing w/ Duchatelet!). Non-binding bids due next week.
The question becomes what happens if they don't get bids, especially no bids for further investment (because I don't think they're going to get takeover bids)? Will they continue to invest in the squad this summer and beyond? Only time will tell.
I believe that they feel they have been sold a pup and are looking to get some of their money back. Either by an injection of capital from a new investor or by being bought out.

Could listen to Louis all day long when he talks Charlton, very easy listening and take on the current "Ownership" v "Investment" discussion, which could be two sides of the same coin, dependent on the amount of new Investment is provided, let's see where this takes us.Scoham said:4 -

Not certain mr Carter is using his good loyal charlton fan status to be able to pull the wool over people’s eyes. Hypothetically speaking of course. So far the actions aren’t matching up with the words, from anyone at the club.0

He is being "cryptic" because that's exactly what he's supposed to do. I'm sure there are different discussions of varying importance and significance going on that nobody has a clue about and probably 99% of them go nowhere.Sword65pf said:

I think diplomatic is better than cryptic. Firstly he isn't going to go public with the commercial sensitivities - and nor should he. Equally, why be drawn? If someone comes in and says I'll give you £100 million for the football club, and someone else says I'll invest £15 million, there is a decision to be made by the current owners. I'm not saying either is going to happen (especially the first one) but why commit when it's not possible yet to consider the unknowns.6 -
But you didn't say "cryptic" you said "pulling the wool over our eyes" which is a completely different meaning and implication ie that he is deceiving fans.Sword65pf said:

If only you didn't go to the World Cupbobmunro said:I'm a lifelong Charlton fan. I stood on the old East terrace as a seven year old with my older half brother, a few months after our dad died - that was 62 years ago and in all that time, suffering the few highs and many lows, my love for Charlton has not diminished. Years in the wilderness and the glorious return home. If I was a billionaire I would probably spend most of my fortune on buying and financing Charlton Athletic. I would pay Two Sheds what he wanted to get The Valley back and then put it in trust so it could never be separated from the club again. All of that would be 100% emotional and also 100% irrational. Just the same as the likes of Steve Gibson, Simon Jordan (spit) and John Coates who likewise stood on their respective terraces as young boys. Our owners are none of the above - they are rational, successful businessmen and rational, successful businessmen do not continue to lose money, perhaps more money than they anticipated, without reviewing their 'investment'. People say yes but it's only about £15m a year - they can afford it. £15m a year loss is serious money, a huge wedge, even to a billionaire, yet some dismiss it as small change. Our owners do not have the emotion that we as fans do - and my story above would be echoed by many on here - we would spend irrationally if for example in Friedman's financial position. How can we expect complete strangers to Charlton to continue to bail us out without looking to mitigate those ongoing losses?

I don't know what planet the Yanks are on thinking they wouldn't be haemorrhaging dough buying a football club.
I mean I'm no football finance expert but I thought it would be common knowledge it was always going to be horrific. Weird for them to want to bail on the fact it's burning money , surely they weren't naive enough to believe they could get losses down to not very much , bizarre lack of due diligence11
