Summer Window 2026 - Rumours and Discussion (DEADLINE DAY from Page 814)

We well could be offering him the right money alternatively he just doesn’t want to be at Charlton anymore which you couldn’t really blame him for if he did want to move.2121 said:We just need to pay tc what he's worth in the market and secure the contract4 -
In an ideal world if it wasn’t an issue or not too much change, I think we would benefit from seeing the following leave:
Kaminski, Mannion, Asiimwe, Docherty, Rakin-Costello, Apter, KanuThen upgrade the squad with better players for the following positions:
Goalkeeper, central midfielder, right winger
Overall, most, if not all, of those players above I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t here by end of August 2027.
Docherty and Coventry are out of contract next summer and there’s no mention or hint of a new deal for either. I think both will be gone.
Don’t mean to get so ahead of myself but in terms of future planning, I fully expect the squad to look very different this time next year should all things on the pitch this season go well.10 -
People are acting like it’s a disaster and we will hardly win a game with them playing. Which clearly isn’t true because we won plenty with one or both of them playing last season.Chunes said:
It's not disrespectful... It's just an opinion about their footballing merit. I hope we can stop trying to dress that up as some kind of moral failing.NabySarr said:
We had one or both of Cov and Doc playing in pretty much every game last season and stayed up. This season we will need them to play less but they are both good enough to play a role againValley11 said:Still think centre mid is light on quality. If Challobah gets a knock we'll be back to Ouma plus Cov or Doc. I like both by the way, but we need more quality if we want to avoid a relegation scrap.
Think it’s quite disrespectful the way people are talking about them both when they both contributed to us winning plenty of points last season. Docherty away at Sheffield United was probably one of the best individual performances of the season. It’s not like having to play one of them means we will definitely be losing games. Playing 1 of them is absolutely fine, they both have good attributes, it’s just playing them together in this system that is not idealOur record with Docherty in the team was actually very strong, but now if he plays next to Chalobah or Ouma it’s seen as a massive failing? The numbers just don’t back that view up. Fair enough people are entitled to their opinion but I’m also entitled to say I think that it’s wrong and disrespectful9 -
Campbell, the God of Football. His only defect is lack of confidence. Having to give the likes of Lloyd Jones, Ramsay, Ouma, Sichenje, and Chalobah a bollocking from time to time will make a man of him.Kinsella87 said:
Not sure who else would be captain material, Godden maybe?2 -
Feels like we are trying to shut down the debate by framing it as a moral outrage. We're all here to share our opinions. Just because we strongly disagree with an opinion doesn't make it 'disrespectful'.NabySarr said:

Doch & Cov will always have my respect: they are top pros. I also don't think they have enough impact in the Champ. But that's just an opinion on their footballing ability at the level.

I’d take TC staying over Apter, but with his contract situation and the fact we’re lopsided now on the left based on playing inverted wingers, it wouldn’t surprise me if he left to be one of the 4 to make way for an additional RW.Sage said:Currently now sit at 28 senior players
Kaminski, Mannion, Brooks
Ramsay McNamara, Asiimwe
Jones, Sichenje, Burke, Koumetio, Bell
Edwards, Mesik
Coventry, Docherty, Rakin-Costello, Chalobah, Ouma
Carey, Knibbs
Apter, Alli, Campbell, Grant
Godden, Kelman, Leaburn, Kanu
Additional players who do not count towards the cap are Mwamba, Fullah, Mbick
If we are to bring in another winger, 4 senior players need to go.
Asiimwe and Kanu will definitely leave. That leaves 2 more.
People also need to be aware that even if we sign a loan player under the age of 21, they still count towards the 25 man squad cap. We can only get around it if we are to permanently sign a player who was under the age of 21 by the turn of this calendar year.
I really hope TC stays and signs a new deal.
Personally would be happy to see Apter go on loan or be sold. One of Coventry, Docherty or Rakin-Costello are also likely to have to be moved on.Wouldn’t be surprised if we now see a few out the door over the next 7-10 days and we bring in the final winger in the last 10 days of the window. If he didn’t leave, we got someone left footed on the right and Apter went on loan, we’re still with just one player who can cut in. Not sure how it will pan out to be honest. Agree Kanu and Asiimwe will be moved on, but then it seems the next logical choice is one of Cov, JRC and Doc. With both Coventry and Doc with one year remaining, you could argue you try to sell either/or to get some money (not sure who would be willing to pay for either as I don’t see them as sellable assets). Yet out the three, JRC has had the least game time. One of the three of them will surely go (most likely on loan, or a small fee if it’s Cov or Doc), I just couldn’t tell you who it’s likely to be, quite hard to say0 -
No one mentioned a right-back. Go and mind your sheep.KiwiValley said:Sorry if it has already been discussed but if we are done with midfield what is there left to sort out? Did someone mention a RB? If so what names have been mentioned in this position if any?0 -

I'll be surprised if we can sell TC this summer. From his PoV, there is no advantage to accepting a transfer now. If he leaves on a free next year, he'll have more options and get a higher salary.8

I’m not hating on Doc and Cov, or anyone else involved in last season’s effort, but the “we stayed up with them” defence is dangerous. It’s true, we did stay up but our form for the latter, of 2/3 of the season once the promotion momentum and element of surprise wore off, was firmly relegation form. We were also, for a change, benefactors of what was also pretty extraordinary season with the Leicester and Sheff W situations. Not diminishing the achievement, or the part any individual player played in it, at all, but we need to makes significant strides in squad quality and depth this summer to make sure we stay up. Hopefully we’ve done enough and I think Doc and Coventry will both probably feature in plenty of games but if they’re our regular starters it will definitely be a concern. And I say that as something has defended both of them plenty of times over the last 12 months.10

You have to remember that Naby Sarr is a humane and kind-hearted man. He probably donates to rest homes for retired donkeys. That would naturally influence his attitude on this matter.Chunes said:

It probably doesn't fall short by a great deal when you factor in the Sichenje signing was brought forward from this window. An option to buy on Ouma would likely mean having to take money out of the budget as well as if he was purchased if we wanted to make him permanent so that money has likely been earmarked from the budget too.golfaddick said:
It's all talk.Danny Addick said:Did we really keep our powder dry to make 2 loan signings for cm and rw?
I know frees & loans attract up front payments, and some players such as Grant & Chalobah will be on higher wages than our average players, but our transfer outlay falls short of what most on here would have thought we would have spent by the season opener.
And no-one will convince me that we've been chasing Ouma for months. Per-leeease.
Then you factor in recent comments from Gavin Carter which said our budget would be slightly higher than last year but may be dependent on a few sales too which to me sounded like we need to clear our deadwood to be able to make more signings.
We're currently on 28 players and if we still want to bring in a winger will mean 4 players will have to go. Agreed with the recent comment I think we're now probably going to have to see 4 players leave before the winger is signed. Wouldn't surprise me if all this goes up to deadline day. You would expect Asiimwe and Kanu to be 2 of the 4 to leave, then either Campbell or Apter and then probably JRC or maybe Docherty.
Shame it looks like the Holsgrove deal isn't happening but this is football, maybe he'll have a change of heart on deadline day if all better options are gone and we're able to move on both JRC and Docherty to create room. Could be there's not enough budget left to sign him and we'd have to use next year's budget instead but with both Docherty and Coventry entering the last 12 months of there contracts each, maybe this wouldn't be a bad idea who knows.1 -
I think we need to look at the current squad not necessarily as a finished product but as one step of a transition - not that Jones will see this as a makeshift squad but more that we are now hopefully looking at a team to establish ourselves as a "regular" Championship side.Sage said:

Nathan Jones is traditionally a long term evolution kind of manager. He’ll have a squad that can do what is needed right now but I don't believe for a minute he thinks or intends our current squad to be one that challenges at the top - but he will already be thinking of how to get there.12 -
My worry is players do this more and more and we’ll have this with Kayne and Lloyd too. It’s in their interest to make us think they’ll sign a contract and then not. Especially once transfer window shutsChunes said:I'll be surprised if we can sell TC this summer. From his PoV, there is no advantage to accepting a transfer now. The offer on the table it’s up to him now. … needs to decide in the next two weeks what he doing ..2121 said:We just need to pay tc what he's worth in the market and secure the contract0 -
I think TC will stay... Reminds me when we knew Elliot was always going to be leaving, he started the 2011/12 season but only got squad No. 44 - Perhaps I'm reading too much into squad numbers, as they genuinely don't mean anything, but giving Campbell No. 7 again unless we were actively looking to sell, to make space in the registrations etc... It doesn't make complete sense.5
-
In light of this, good luck to the fella, hope he gets the move he wants. Would rather have a player at the club who wants to be here, not one that sees us as a last ditch option when he doesnt get the transfer he wants. Glad the club moved on from him.stjohnshill said:Had an update from the Holsgrove camp -
Still extremely unlikely he comes. The asking price has caused some issues for us but ultimately the player still doesn’t have much interest in Charlton, despite some of his German offers no longer being there36 -

Now is the summer of our discontent
Made glorious winter by this sun of Nairobi.
How quickly a couple of signings change the mood or least briefly quieten the doubters.
Jones said seven signings and we've signed seven with one more on the cards, maybe two if the Kaminski rumours have any substance.
Under promise, over deliver is always a good policy or "keep your powder dry" as some might say.
We've strenghtened in most areas and have more depth.
Nearly all the ingrediants of the dessert have been assembled and the Jones the Baker can now cook them as he pleases but as ever the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.10 -

But if Holsgrove is not gonna happening you move on to your next best option if you’ve half a brain or would you have preferred us to sign Foo Kin Noone.
Jeez I’m signing out for the night as the stupidity levels are too much at times.
Chapple was interviewed in MOD mag last season (well worth a read) and said his job was to have a big and ever evolving database of potential signings so if we needed a player in a certain position ie centre mid we'd have data, scouting reports, personality profiles, etc on a number of possible players here and increasingly abroad.
They aim to be ready and aware if a player becomes available for whatever reason ie contract running down, fallen out of favour, wants a move.
Ouma would, IMHO, have been one of those on Chapple's database so we knew all about him because, yes, we'd been looking at him and many others for a long time not just this summer.17 -
They can just be not registered but that leaves an unhappy player kicking his heels at Sparrows Lane while still drawing wages from a tight budget.DDOUBLEE said:Must the players that we wish to be rid of have to be sold before the winger comes in? It might happen but it will be something neither Rodwell or Jones will want.5 -

I know he’s not been very impressive bar a few games around Christmas but JRC has been a CM in the champ for a good number of years, and was earmarked last year by Nathan as getting more minutes “as we evolve” I think he and the other 4 central midfielders is okay, but there is a bit too much reliance on Chalobah staying fit and Ouma being good enough I think7

Those heading for out of contract have a big decision to make.Chunes said:I'll be surprised if we can sell TC this summer. From his PoV, there is no advantage to accepting a transfer now. If he leaves on a free next year, he'll have more options and get a higher salary. Not committing to Nathan’s journey comes with a risk as he has to look past you to build going forward. That is not to say you will not play, but knowing you will be gone as soon as he can get you out means that tactics and style will change to what he will have.
If you do end up not being first choice or the role doesn’t suit you it may well reduce your perceived value.TC is a good example. Nathan clearly likes him and plays him. If he could potentially be moving in January he has Alli and Grant to fill that space. Could mean he starts right wing, struggles, and becomes back up for new signing/Apter.
If Preston is the only offer he has, he would be silly not to sign a new contract IMO. Plenty may be interested on a free, but if a Club higher up the food chain WANT him, they will buy him, and higher wages will come with that.8 -
