Happy 20th Birthday Charlton Life!

Amazing what AFKA and Lookie have created and can’t imagine life without it. Every time I visit other fan forums it just brings home what a quality site this is. Please know your dedication and effort is not taken for granted.

Only December 2006 for me, not quite as sad as the real early ones..... 20 years, jesus that's some going, never been too much of a poster but wouldn't be without it. 

I joined in 2009 having been on Netaddicks and Glynn Jones mailing list prior to that. Also occasional player for the footy team. So been here 17 years and still don't know how to stop a fucking draft post from appearing on my screen!!!

On a positive note; a question. How do I get to meet some of you mysterious shady characters? Want to go to more games when I'm up at uni and meet some Charlton fans 'irl' as they say. Unfortunately my generation, for the most part, hasn't quite cracked actually speaking to real life people, rather than usernames on a screen.

If the appetite is there I’d be more than happy to try and organise a meet up for younger users (although I’m not sure I count as younger myself anymore as I’m 29 and tbh anyone is welcome not just the younger generation) as I myself would like to meet more Charlton fans irl

On no other platform can you share joy and elation, upset and misery. Or seek and receive advice on will making, house moving, car buying, dog naming...

Or have people respond so kindly to calls for help and support and genuinely look out for each other when times are really hard.

So much more than a Charlton forum.

What happened in those eventful 20 years, forgetting what goes on when those in redshirts take to the green bit in the middle.

Getting to play (sort of) on the sacred grass where as a 14 year old lad on the Groundstaff I was forbidden to tread by Mr Maurice Banham.

Running (sort of) in 3 Run to the Beat fundraisers, getting beaten to the line by a bottle of Guinness in the first one was hardly good for my morale but went on to run two more.

Going into the recording studio and duetting with @Badger on Valley Floyd Road was something certainly etched in my memory bank and must have left him scarred for life.

The CL coach away to Derby, was experience where I met a certain Nathan Prior watching him try four or five seats on an empty top deck of the bus while trying to hurry @DaveStorry up the stairs so he didn’t chose to sit next to me.

Ultimately being invited to watch The Upbeats training at Sparrows lane was to be a life changer for me, those that don’t know for some reason I was invited to bring along a my then Therapy dog Bailey to meet the guys in 2013 and watch my dog build a relationship with them that went on to bring him to several sponsored walks.

From that I took early retirement at 57 and spent many a day visiting schools, care homes and hospices bringing whatever we could to those that want us there.

My dogs may have changed but they still bring a sense of calm to those that need calm and are non judgmental to those that struggle with confidence, something we could do sometimes.

For the last 13 years working in school predominantly as Reading dogs and all came about through this wonderful forum.

The lowest point despite some appallingly ownership’s was discovering an individual SMT member using their position to intimidate staff, this in turn led to 7 then staff members contacting me (some anonymously or via family) naming incidents involving the same person.

Happy birthday CL, late coming to the party.  But so much to enjoy and explore. A positive smorgasbord of old memories to be enjoyed 24/7. 

Whatever the day brings good or bad, I can always come here and lose myself into another place, where I feel entirely at home.
If I had a £ for every hour I’ve spent on here in the last 18 years I would be a very wealthy guy.
Got to know some fabulous posters from the forum, with a special mention for the much missed Addickted (Nick Hannam), surely one of the greatest CL contributors of all time…….of which there are many.
Finally, as I often say………onwards and sideways CL…….onwards and sideways.👏

Relative newbie compared to most joining in 2013.
I am mostly a reader, lol er and liker rather than a compulsive poster!
There is nothing that I could possibly add except to echo everyone's thoughts.
