Can you tell how bad a hamstring injury is straight away?
Generally speaking it being a hamstring injury AT ALL is not good sign as those can be tricky to manage in terms of recovery. Some maybe less so than others but if it is a hamstring then that's probably not something you sort out quickly.

I can only assume that most posters on here are under 40 & don't remember that the League Cup used to be over 2 legs for the first round(s). And then there were replays for the one legged games. And then just 1 sub (or 3 if we come into the 90's).

Players used to regularly play 50 + games season.  None of this resting players. Would be interested to see the line up for the FA Cup match we played at WHL in 81 ? 82 ?  Did that differ from the League matches before or after. I doubt it.
Excellent comparison, football in the 80s versus modern day. Your posts do make me laugh.

Not quite sure where to start. Though maybe 5.45am alarm this morning is worth mentioning - a long day of travelling down from Scotland for that.

When I saw the line up I was shocked. To me that is disrespectful to fans, the competition and the opposition. I hoped against hope I’d have to eat my words but the outcome, with the injuries and heavy defeat, is even worse than I feared. Fans I know from 17 year olds to 70 year olds are pissed off.

NJ is his own man but we are meant to be a professional football club / team and across the season we compete in three competitions- the league, the EFL cup and the FA Cup. The latter two offer fans the opportunity for big days out and are part and parcel of the season. We’ve had shite cup draws over many years and I can forgive playing second strings v non league and lower league sides. But tonight wasn’t / shouldn’t have been that. Compare and contrast with the wonderful night we had at Old Trafford not so long ago - thank you Dean Holden.

NJ will have to cope now with the consequences of lack of centre halves and a shuddering halt to the strong momentum we’d been building. So we now don’t complete JRS signing because of this?!

To play young and new players (Mesik, Ouma, Collins, Alli, MBick) who we are looking to integrate into the first team squad alongside those he has made it obvious are on their way out (Apter, Knibbs, Asiimwe, Doc) makes no sense whatsoever to me. And as for throwing Brooks in at the deep end when we have a new keeper champing at the bit to play?

Good (no not really) night from me.

Enough has been written about on field so just a few comments about the stadium. Itslike a spaceship from another planet plonked into a slummy urban area. If Charlton's  caterers are slow, Spurs catering services make ours look like speedy gonzalez runs them And this is my fantastic view for their two first half goals and our goal.

We could have played our best team, and we’d have still missed out on a money spinner v. Liverpool.
Our squad cost £25 million. Tottenham spent £300 million on players this summer alone.
Considering the opposition I thought Assimwe had a pretty good game, and Mbick had some good moments.
We did really well for 40mins, and even had a 10 minute spell when we almost dominated.
Had Docherty’s effort gone in it would’ve been interesting to see how their fans reacted.
In the end, though, there’s a huge gulf in class between the two starting line-ups.
    Chronic journey home. Boo.

Absolutely pointless. Still ain’t home. Bring on the league games.
  • Had a pretty fantastic seat right above the players tunnel.in the top tier amongst the various owners of the clubs.  The lounge had Paul Miller, Chris Perry and others as well as our ownership represented.  Food/wine as good as you would expect.

Disappointed to see the line up at the start as we never gave ourselves a chance but understand the reasons for it.

Thought our lads battled well and Spurs looked naff for the first 40 minutes then the keeper let one straight through his arms and that was that.

Apter looked like the player I remembered, small, weak, ineffectual.  That was a seriously poor purchase and he needs to go.

I was quite impressed with M'Bick and Mwamba when he came on too.  Definitely good options for the squad.

The injuries are absolutely gutting.  Was Collins injury prone before joining us or is his body just struggling with the intensity of UK football?  Not promising so far which would be awful for the lad and us as he looks decent.  Koumetio I would have rested given his previous injury record.

Onto Preston, win that and the season start would have been unreal.

    Just got back.
I imagine it's all been said.
No hurry to return to that stadium it was a drag getting there and getting away, and had to climb loads of (exhausting at my age) stairs to get to my seat.
Impressive stadium in a computer game kind of way, until depression took over our support was the extent of any atmosphere there.
Of course the change of team was a shock, but the injuries did for us as did letting in a very saveable first goal.
After that huge resources beat limited resources comfortably.
That isn't to say there were't some positives, not least the experience some of the players gained even with very scant success.
I'm sorry but Apter playing mystified me completely.
I thought our best player was forgotten man Nathan Asimwe, who played very much in the mould of Karoy Anderson, and had to adjust the position he played a couple of times which he did effectively. Credit to Nathan.
Preston on Saturday is now the total focus.
Well done to all the fans who went, especially for the bulk of the first half where hopes were optimistic, but as I say, resources won out.

Apparently there was an average of 7.8 changes per team from the starting XI for championship clubs competing in this round of the cup compared to their last league fixture.

Excellent post, I'm sorry you travelled all that way for that, its a huge credit to you as a supporter and a shame the club didn't fulfill their side of things, it was appalling the team didn't come over at the end.
Huge respect to you for your effort and commitment.
  • The starting line up tells you all you need to know.

It’s disrespectful to the competition and to those paying for  tickets and tv subscriptions.

It was not a pre season friendly.

No justification at this stage in the season.

totally agree what a waste of fucking money, I am and still remain very enthusiastic and optimistic about the season and dont mind getting beat just when you play a premier league team which in my lifetime I havent had much of an opportunity to see would rather the reserves not be put out

Billy will be a big loss and shame we managed to lose Collins in the same move. Think Mesik and Bell are solid but a bit worried about that position in general now.

I don’t like singling out individual players but I think Apter showed why he has no future at the club. Really poor tonight and made no effort to engage with the fans who clapped him and sang his song. Not good enough for the level we are at and Nathan Jones knows that so not convinced we will see him again. Would be surprised if he can even manage a league one loan unless Blackpool want him back
  • Apter, Ouma, Brooks, Knibbs and Docherty were absolute poo as well

May as well just scrap the tournament. Clearly the clubs aren't arsed.

I don’t agree with the team selection but I think this is where the conflict between the story we tell ourselves about following a club and the manager’s priorities are exposed. On a risk and reward basis the selection makes sense; on a momentum building, club development perspective it doesn’t. And it backfired because we lost two important players to injury anyway.

I do get that the schedule of Saturday/Wednesday for the next three weeks is tough, but I’m also certain some of our first-choice players would have liked the opportunity to play in that stadium. And that playing people who know they have no realistic future at Charlton is a bit weird.

Anyway, I had no expectation of a close game so I gave up my away end ticket to a friend and watched it from the press box. Last time I did that was at Accrington. Bit of a difference. As the bloke next to me advised in the run-up to the interval, they serve dessert to the press at half-time, as well as a two-course pre-match meal. So at least I got fed. The facilities are completely off the scale.

Easy to say in hindsight but I wish we’d got Wimbledon away instead. This team probably would’ve beaten them and it would’ve been a more satisfying day out lol.

    Hang it in the Louvre!
  • I was so disappointed when I saw the team when it was announced, almost a feeling I’d never felt before supporting Charlton. It just felt that team had no hope in getting a result and Jones knew it, playing players who haven’t even had a look in during the league. Down right disrespectful to the travelling fans and also the players themselves, throwing in them at the deep end. I’m actually really annoyed about it more than I thought I would be.

However, fantastic stadium, in an awful area, what a hole of a place, totally crap to get to and from. Zero atmosphere there, it felt that music blaring out at the start of the game didn’t help at all to get it going.

If we smash Preston on Saturday I will totally understand, if not, I will still be pissed off.

Should also say that although I disagree with his approach tonight, Nathan is still heavily in credit from Saturday. Probably our best away result since the PL, although Steve Brown countered with Jacko’s win at Sunderland earlier.

How do people feel about the League Cup in general? If teams like us and also teams in the Prem also have other priorities then the future is bleak.

Was TC even there tonight? I was amazed he didn't even make the bench tonight, as someone in the form of his life would surely have loved to test himself against PL defenders.

    The positives:

     • Ticket prices were reasonable and we got a good allocation
     • Beautiful stadium that is architecturally wonderful
     • Best pre match sausage roll ever
     • Charlton fans in good voice (at least to start with)
     • We did alright for twenty minutes and had the first shot on target
     • Can't say they didn't try, even though there was a big imbalance in skill levels
    Jones' goal run continues

    The negatives:

     • All those steps
     • The state of the art bottom-pouring beer pumps were wasted as they didn't have the right cups, so had to decant every pint poured
     • That team. Really? On paper, nowhere near good enough
     • That architecturally wonderful stadium, it's just too big and completely soulless
     • Injuries, injuries, bloody injuries. I sometimes think this club is jinxed
     • That team. Not only not good enough on paper, not good enough on grass either
     • The queues to get away. Absolutely mad.
     • The journey home. Still ain't got there.

    One more positive:

     • I'm so glad I'm a Charlton fan. I'd hate to be a Spurs fan and have that as my match day experience every week. Soulless

Listen, I completely understand the decision, I know the league is more important, I know we probably would of lost with our first team out, I know the risk.

However, seeing that lineup walking into the ground, with 10 changes just killed the occasion. Maybe I was expecting a few changes, I wasn’t planning on watching Rob Apter.

Atmosphere after they scored just went, it was practically non existent second half. It was almost like well if the club ain’t bothering then neither should we.

    Just a real anti-climax of a night.

Anyway, not overly bothered and onto Preston

Agreed with every bit of this.

The away end definitely felt a little flatter than it should have in the build up to kick off. It was as if we’d basically thrown the game before the whistle had even blown.

Well done to the young lads out there who held on as long as they could.

And whilst the injuries are annoying - they could easily happen in a league game. A couple of changes here and there I can understand, but bloody hell I’ve seen us put out stronger sides in the Pizza Cup.

Tonight was meant to be a big occasion, with 6,000 away fans turning up to play one of the biggest clubs / stadium in world football in a very special opportunity. And that lineup showed that we treated it as if it was nothing more than an inconvenience.

The league is most important, but come on, the fans that went tonight have every right to feel a bit let down by those decisions. Does it always have to just be about league points? Supporting a club like ours should embrace the chance to have a glorious cup moment every now and then. At least give us half a chance when it comes around once in a blue moon.
    This.

Just hope it was all worth it & we beat Preston on Sat.......although our recent record against them is worse than that against Millwall. Lost our last 7 against them.

Meh. We simply don’t have the squad depth or quality to compete in the Champ AND a cup run. Best to do as we’ve done and get some good competitive minutes in for the B squad lads and crack on with the season.
Why did we play such a strong side against Cheltenham then? 🤷‍♂️

Sums up perfectly. Genuinely excited at the draw and then just ended up a massive damp squib as it was crystal clear pre KO we weren’t even going to lay a glove on them with that line up.
