Meh. We simply don’t have the squad depth or quality to compete in the Champ AND a cup run. Best to do as we’ve done and get some good competitive minutes in for the B squad lads and crack on with the season.
Why did we play such a strong side against Cheltenham then? 🤷‍♂️
As that was treated as basically our final pre season friendly.

I said to colleague yesterday we would get thumped, I knew like everyone else we would field a team that could not and would not be able to compete with Spurs. I looked at the team when it was announced and I thought it could be a cricket score. I didn't go, I didn't watch it on Sky, instead I watched Love it or List it Best builds.
Its a shame the amount of people that turn up to watch that mis-match and to be served up the silly excuses by NJ but when are people going to learn, we like most other clubs have more important games in the league to worry about. I remember a quarter final against Wycombe, 20 years ago, where the players\club short changed us. It time to play these games behind close doors on the training ground, or not bother entering at all. By playing a weakened team you are effectively throwing the game before a ball is kicked. At best its taking the pee out of everything good the game stands for. At least those who like ticking off new grounds were able to marvel at that one.
I don't know who the more gullible are, the fans, the clubs, the football league, the sponsors or the tv companies or maybe all equally. It will be the same in January when we are drawn in the next FA Cup comp.

Shame they didn’t tell fans in advance. Although Rodwell sort of did on TalkSPORT earlier today.
NJ said it in the post-match interview after West Ham and in the pre-match before Spurs.

I genuinely can’t believe fans are having digs at apter and knibbs after getting thrown into a second string team playing against a prem side. Some of you really haven’t got a clue.

Everyone moaning about Jones making so many changes but you’d be hard pressed to find a Championship manager playing a PL team who hadn’t done that this week. Preston 8 changes against Everton for example. They can’t all be wrong.

Because it got treated as a final Pre-Season game for those starting vs Derby the following week, especially as last night was the first time the eleven has been changed since.
Jones treated last night like a pre season game too but instead we embarrassed ourselves infront of 60k including 6k of our own fans. If you don't give a monkeys about the cup play the kids in the first round and get knocked out. I get the need for changes but why not have some ammo on the bench

The 'minutes for some players' doesn't really hold water when it's likely some of them won't play again until the January cup game.

Please don't tell me that there were half and half scarves for sale outside the ground.
Yes, I saw them, mind you I saw someone with a Derby scarf in the upper covered end the other week, thought to myself what a twat, then I saw it was a half & half scarf and thought what a fucking twat.

Don't understand how the injures scupper a deal for JRS.

PLAY Bell/mesik at cb short term or bring in a loan.

Hopefully it's just disappointed talking straight after the game
Because they are going to be long term, that is how it scuppers the JRS deal, as we have limited budget and now we need to find a good center back or two.

Carbuncle in your passage? Brings a tear to the eye just thinking about it. Anyway couldn’t care less about Spuds - let’s save the rancour for the Championship. All I want is safety asap without last seasons squeaky bum time and I’m not throwing any toys out the pram until we see how that pans out.
  • The only positive with the two injuries is that they've happened now and we're hopefully able to do something about it. Happens in a weeks time we'd be stuck.

I can’t get my head around those that were expecting to only see a few changes from Saturday. Jones was always going to heavily rotate tonight, with more important games coming up, and also playing 2 games a week for the next 2.5 weeks.

Last night proved there were a lot of fans that don’t attend regularly. Behind me there was a Charlton fan in a ‘retro shirt’ talking to his 2 mates (West Ham and Chelsea) comparing the atmosphere to when they were there supporting their clubs.

Some people saying it was ‘disrespectful to the fans’ is laughable. Jones chose a side based on our current position and unfortunately got very unlucky with the injuries we have now picked up.

You go to support the team, whatever 11 is put out. if you want to see the first 11, get down The Valley on Saturday!
  • I appreciate that it’s annoying not seeing the best lineup if you had a ticket but Jones made 10 changes and the one change he didn’t make resulted in an injury to that player potentially so devastating we might not be able to sign JRS as a result. The margins are so fine at this level across so many departments

If you are going to make changes then change Chalobah, Bell and Billy as they are the 3 most injury prone.  I said it before the game.  Why change 10 and leave Billy in there.  Poor managerial decision for me.

They were all wrong. The cup games provide some serious income but more importantly they provide a diversion for the players from the mental pressures and stresses that will build up from the Championship.

But the game has changed. Whereas it once evolved to be all about the PL whose games made cup competitions meaningless it’s now becoming all about the Championship as well because of the fine lines between promotion, safety and relegation and the financially crippling expenditures from being in the division which can no longer determine where a club will finish.

    Just win against Preston now.

At the time when I saw the team while walking up to the stadium, I was thoroughly annoyed - thinking about it without the emotion it was the right call. I would have played Okonkwo instead of Brooks but it’s done now. The biggest concern for me is that the gap between the first and second XIs is worlds apart and any more injuries will leave us with some half arsed performances from some.

If I blame N Jones for anything it is keeping Sichenje on after his first injury, he was in so much pain then it was obvious it was bad, but no we do not take the cautious view and take him off , it was only a cup game. They could then protect his leg and the next day have it fully assessed and possibly scanned.

A bit deflated still from last night. It’s no biggie, agree with rotation and Preston more important, but you’ve still got to be competitive. Otherwise what was the point in putting a strong side out at Cheltenham and not giving 2nd, 3rd, 4th choice players game time then?

Jones says there are few upsets these days, but 9 times last season Prem teams were knocked out the cups by EFL and non-league teams (Macclesfield 👍). It’s not insurmountable.

If you approach these games with the mentality of ‘we’ve no chance’ and select accordingly, you won’t lay a glove on them. Which we didn’t.

Football supporting is about memories and moments and we didn’t give a chance of one being created for us last night, which was a bit gutting.

Anyway, done now and we move on.

Listen, I completely understand the decision, I know the league is more important, I know we probably would of lost with our first team out, I know the risk.

However, seeing that lineup walking into the ground, with 10 changes just killed the occasion. Maybe I was expecting a few changes, I wasn’t planning on watching Rob Apter.

Atmosphere after they scored just went, it was practically non existent second half. It was almost like well if the club ain’t bothering then neither should we.

    Just a real anti-climax of a night.

Anyway, not overly bothered and onto Preston

Agreed with every bit of this.

The away end definitely felt a little flatter than it should have in the build up to kick off. It was as if we’d basically thrown the game before the whistle had even blown.

Well done to the young lads out there who held on as long as they could.

And whilst the injuries are annoying - they could easily happen in a league game. A couple of changes here and there I can understand, but bloody hell I’ve seen us put out stronger sides in the Pizza Cup.

Tonight was meant to be a big occasion, with 6,000 away fans turning up to play one of the biggest clubs / stadium in world football in a very special opportunity. And that lineup showed that we treated it as if it was nothing more than an inconvenience.

The league is most important, but come on, the fans that went tonight have every right to feel a bit let down by those decisions. Does it always have to just be about league points? Supporting a club like ours should embrace the chance to have a glorious cup moment every now and then. At least give us half a chance when it comes around once in a blue moon.

Am I allowed to agree with this?

Its one of the main bug bears I have with Spurs, they haven't treated cuo games seriously for years as it always seemed more important to go for European qualification (if you excluded the last 2 seasons obviously!) so have got every sympathy.

Dont be too downbeat as I told every single one of you on the way home last night.

You lot sung your bollocks off first 35 mins, the first Valley Floyd Road was a bit special.  Reckon that was one of the loudest renditions we've heard in the stadium.

Hope you all got home on with the minimum of trouble.

Completely understand the team changes but it did make the game a non-event. Still had a good night, fantastic stadium but getting there and back was a ball ache. Glad I don’t have to put up with that every other week.

I was with @1905 at a home LC game during the premier years and we both said it would be the last time we’d bother. Really only went last night to tick the ground off and can’t see myself bothering again.

Unfair to have a pop at Brookes, but he was out of his depth,I just hope the lads confidence hasnt taken a dive.Indeed the same goes for all the players, they dont play all season and then get thrown to the Wolves away to a premiership team. This is really making a mockery of our cup competitions, they used to be the glamour side of the season,(especially the fa cup)but now they just get in the way.Nobody in that ground last night enjoyed that game, the players, and supporters of both teams ,they would all rather have been somewhere else, having watched and played in such a pedestrian paced excuse for a football match.

Sounds like Billy was going to be left out, and then Burke got injured.

I live 150+ miles from London and I didn’t go to the game last night. However, even if I was still living in the South East, I still wouldn’t have gone. The League Cup competition is largely a busted flush now: 12,000 plus of Tottenham’s regular supporters couldn’t  be arsed to go. We have had a good start to the league season and that is where Charlton’s status and future will be decided. Ultimately, it is also where Jones’s reputation will be decided. If someone like Campbell got crocked playing in such a game it would be detrimental to us further cementing our place, or better, in the Championship.

    From Jones’ post Match

“If I was flat out tonight and we played all my first-team, how do we prepare them to go again two days later? And then three days later at West Brom? And then two days later to go again at Stoke? And then three days later against Portsmouth? It’s impossible to do and that’s why the scheduling is me

I was as disappointed as everyone when I saw the line-up, not least because I had to pay £15 to watch it even though I have my sub to Charlton TV, because...yeah well I'll come back to that.

After I saw Koumetio was down as well as Sichenje I stopped watching. Very rarely I do that. Actually I think it was when the worst commentator in the world told me that Mesik is Croatian.

But having heard NJ this morning I  I fully get where he's coming from. There's an answer now to why he even played Koumetio. It was because Burke pulled up injured- yet again - in the preparation. Heaven knows why - yet again - Sichenje pulls up with what looks like a bad injury, yet to general surprise goes back on the pitch. That's an issue for the club, certainly, but everything else comes down to the way football has been monetized in this country to ensure that nearly all the money goes to the Premier League.

Name me another league in Europe which has not one but two major cups.  I'll wait. And while you're doing that, name me another league in Europe whose professional pyramid has as many as 92 clubs.  What's the result? The result is that we're now playing three games a week for several weeks until we all stagger to an extended international break, when fans will have no football whatsoever for 3 weeks, in the middle of autumn. This fucking Carabao Cup has a European place for the winners. Heaven knows why UEFA still allow this, but anyway, you can be absolutely sure that the winner will be yet another Premier League club.  Of course it will. As Louis and Rich calculated on last night's pod, we've got a transfer value of about £10 million inr our squad. Spurs have spent £360 million this window. They could have fielded a 3rd-choice player in virtually every position last night and still matched us for overall quality. NJ's job - which he will stand or fall on - is to get us a decent finish in the championship this season, even though our squad value is low, even within this league.

The Carabao fucking cup actively gets in the way of that goal. It would have been nice to have a real go at Spurs, sure, but at what cost? Well, now you can see the cost. Losing Sichenje alone, we could have coped with, as he had not yet established himself. Koumetio though is one of the outstanding performers so far, and is also now out for an extended period. He was not even supposed to be playing. It means almost certainly, we will have to divert our limited remaining transfer funds from the pursuit of JRS to plugging that huge hole in the centre of our defence. Because we are not Spurs. We are not even Southampton with their parachute money or Stoke with their gambling industry money.

We are all pissed off but let's not forget the real problem which is at the root of it all. There's too much football in England, and nearly all the profit from it flows to and stays within the Premier League clubs. Oh and to pay for the eye watering salaries of the second-rate apparatchiks who call themselves CEOs or as administrators of the game claim they have to be paid like CEOs in order to be able to effectively sit down across the table with the club CEOs. They can all fuck off. Especially the idiots who signed off on the TV deals which mean we can't watch Charlton TV for cup games and instead have to pay extra to listen to one of the worst commentaries I've ever heard.

Thank you for your attention. Rant over.

Not much point adding anything as it’s all been said but Tottenham (the area) does not deserve that stadium. The stadium deserves a better fan base, absolute silence for most of the game. I’d actually forgotten how much of a toilet Tottenham is, won’t be in a rush to return.

I live in North Kent and Tottenham makes Chatham look like Dubai
