Rizwan’s lbw looked like it was going well over , moody bounce on the tracking0

I thought on commentary they said Gay didn’t want to but Root pressured. 🙈😂 it looked outer than out at the time!killerandflash said:
It looked like Gay asked him to review it. Anything to keep in the Captain's good booksmart77 said:Awful review from Root.
A action packed day, but a bit unsatisfying too. And unlike the NZ Test here, you can't just blame the pitch.0 -
Watching it live (from side on), Root looked ready to walk off, but Gay walked up to him and presumably suggested a review.mart77 said:

Of the 585 overs bowled by England in Tests this summer, just 74 have been delivered by spinners and they have taken only 8 wickets in total :
Bashir - 38 (3)
Bethell - 25 (4)
Root - 10 (1)
Lawrence - 1 (0)
Which is why, unless we are talking about playing in the Indian subcontinent, I can see Cox staying at 3 and Bethell returning in place of Lawrence at 6. Bethell will have to work at his bowling but, in the absence of any English spinner banging down the door, it makes no sense to include Bashir for one of our quartet of seamers.

The "greatest" England tail of all time vs NZ August 19th, 1999 (Test average):
Caddick (10.37)
Mullally (5.52)
Tufnell (5.10)
Giddins (2.50)

Really pleased for Abbas to get his 5fer and get on the honours board, as you know how much it means to him. Something he will treasure for the rest of his life.1

I think Lawrence getting a couple of 50s will mean they'll stick with him at 6 for now, and either Gay or Cox will make way for Bethell, Cox moving up to open if it's Gay.Addick Addict said:Of the 585 overs bowled by England in Tests this summer, just 74 have been delivered by spinners and they have taken only 8 wickets in total :

This 4 man pace attack looks good and varied, so that's probably left 6/7 as a spinning all-rounder rather than say Curran at 6/7 amd Bashir as a spinner. Rehan should be under consideration, but I think it'll remain Lawrence for now.
Agree they'll be looking for Bethell to work on his bowling though as an option.0 -
I see Surrey have scraped a draw against Essex, thanks to an unbeaten century from Ben Foakes, when no other Surrey player made a 50.2
-
We need the same England bowling attack to be fit to face the Aussies in Summer 27 as they complement each other and as Archer said it stops any one of the pace men to be bowled into the ground.
Tongue is similar to Carse so only if Josh is unfit should Brydon come back in. Yes I know he took plenty of wickets but I wouldn't want Carse straight back in.
Atkinson probably used all his luck up in the early part of his England career but he bowled fine and I want him to be in against the Aussies along with the Mercurial and at times brilliant Robinson. Hopefully now Ollie doesn't waste his undoubted talents with his right arm medium pace bowling.
Archer lost so much of his career to injury so game management is vital in Jofra's case.
Sonny Baker will be well in contention for a starting place so this should keep all the present first choice four on their toes .

And the spin option.....??0

I’d love Bethell to spend the winter working on his spin to become the spinning all rounder down the order with Cox staying at 3golfaddick said:And the spin option.....??1 -
The spin option in red ball cricket remains the mystery!golfaddick said:And the spin option.....??
Until a brilliant spinner comes along it will continue to be batsmen who can turn their arm over.

It's not that much of a mystery as I've tried to explain before.soapboxsam said:

We don't produce spinners because we don't play them in county cricket. Counties won't do so given the prevalent conditions which are favourable to seamers - Kent had two CC games in the three months between 21st May and 20th August . As such, most cricketers who have spin as their one and only discipline struggle to get into the CC side more often than not.
Look at the 1970/80s. Every side had one if not two spinners who would pick up over a hundred wickets in the CC - the likes of Surrey (Pat Pocock and Intikab Alam), Middx (Fred Titmus, Phil Edmonds and John Emburey) and Kent (Derek Underwood). Not one of those three counties will have a spinner with 20 wickets to his name in the CC this season.
In county age group cricket, a one-dimensional cricketer has to be exceptional in that discipline to make it even to the Academy stage so, inevitably, a spinner has to be able to bat too and batting can then become the priority. It becomes a vicious circle and even if that first string is spin, that individual is more likely to learn how to bowl darts because that is less risky and more in demand in white ball. Spinners don't really learn their craft until they are into their late 20s but even that is dependent upon them having bowled thousands of overs in county cricket. Which they don't.
I would love to see Bethell progress as a spinner but anyone care to guess how many red ball wickets he's taken in his career to date? 18 in total from 31 games. So he has to play a lot more matches in the CC but we just know that he won't for the reasons set out above and the complication of him being so sought after in franchise cricket.

I know the PCB are dysfunctional but even for their standards this is ridiculous.Leuth said:

There is no spinner in the system currently who deserves a place in the squad purely on their bowling ability.
That's why I think they have it about right now with the Bethell/Lawrence combination. Bethell clearly has potential with the bat and hopefully can work on his bowling.
Lawrence has proved he can be a decent batting option lower down the order and his spin is reasonable enough when you take into account the rest of the bowling options.
I love watching spin and would love us to produce a top class spinner but I just don't see it happening because spin is so rarely utilized in the county game. Whether right or wrong that is why the ECB have almost tried to manufacture their own with Bashir but that seems not to have worked.0 -
Few rumours that some of those sent home didn't even know and found out on social media.MarcusH26 said:

One of the most baffling things I've ever seen, even by Pakistan standards. Leaving aside how unprepared the new players will be, amongst the players dumped are the keeper Rizman, one of their most well known players, and spinner Ali Usman who got a 5fer in the first Test.MarcusH26 said:

At least Rizwan and Iman know English conditions, they've thrown these new players to the wolves.killerandflash said:

I fully agree it is absolute madness but Pakistan seem to be an absolute circus at the moment on and off the field so its probably not that much of a surprise. I guess you might make an argument they have been so atrocious so far that they can't get much worse irrespective of what squad they put out.MarcusH26 said:

There were some highlights during the rain delay of the 96 series and it is a crying shame to see the state of their cricket now. Everything is cyclical I suppose and I am sure they will come back round but it is hard to see how at the moment.

I, for one, do not miss Wakim & Waquar hurling down 90 mph missiles into the base of the stumps.Notts_Addick said:

More exciting than the Pakistani Darren Stevens being their best bowler thoughgolfaddick said:

Pretty strong Lions squad named but the lead story is buried, Jonathan Trott to coach. Good to see him in the England set up and Mccullum might be looking over his shoulder a bit more now

Pleased to see Trott in place. I am sure Flintoff is a great bloke but couldn't help but think he was a carbon copy of McCullum and he never really seemed to interested in the gig in the first place.fenaddick said:Pretty strong Lions squad named but the lead story is buried, Jonathan Trott to coach. Should be a great opportunity for Trott to prove his worth and hopefully make a case to be next in line for the test role in a few years1 -

Pietersen now part of the white ball setup. Certainly promises to be eventful if nothing else0 -
Shame we're not playing up in Birmingham this week. Could have done with going into town & getting on the lash with the England boys 😉😃0

Mason Crane is an interesting pick. Still only 29, yet another example of a spinner picked when far too young, then dumped. Looking him up, his only Test was in 2018, while his 2 T20Is were in 2017.fenaddick said:Pretty strong Lions squad named but the lead story is buried, Jonathan Trott to coach.
