POST-MATCH THREAD: West Bromwich Albion v Charlton Athletic: Wednesday 2nd September 2026

West Brom away is a tough fixture at any point in the season but with the baggies in fine form and the Addicks looking to extend their winning streak, something would have to give. Tyler Bindon came into the starting eleven to make his debut in place of the injured Billy Koumetio, with Ivan Mesik dropping to the bench. Academy product Alan Mwamba replaced Nathaniel Chaolobah and Millenik Alli came into the starting eleven in place of Sony Carey. Newcomers Junior Nkeng and Timothy Ouma made the bench.

About eight hundred in the away end at The Hawthorns saw the Addicks kick off the first half in their red kit. Some of their passing was occasionally loose from the home side and that provided opportunities for the Addicks to hit on the counter. By thirty minutes on the clock West Brom had noticeably tired. Passing was slow and their pressing had largely stopped. Limited in possession, the visitors didn’t have much attacking threat, though they were resilient in defence and snuffed out much of West Brom’s probing. That was about all there was for the first half. The home supporters were silent as far as I could tell. The Addicks faithful carried most of the atmosphere but it must have been quite frustrating to watch us concede so much possession in such a pedestrian affair, in such a quiet ground.

Nathan Jones made no changes to begin the second half. Charlton were under pressure from the start, mostly down to poor individual decisions, first by Nakamura and then by Alli. Whilst we survived that , we still failed to mount any kind of counter.

The West Brom opening didn’t come until fifty-nine minutes. Bindon cleared a corner and the ball fell nicely on the edge of the box to a striped shirt, from where it was summarily dispatched through traffic. Grant, Mwamba, and Alli were then replaced by Joe Rankin-Costello, Ivan Mesik, and Timothy Ouma, resulting in a chance in formation. One to the good, the home fans were finally now trying to build an atmosphere of their own and their side were confident and in control, as they sought their second.

it was on sixty-eight minutes that the Addicks found the counterpunch they needed to peg the Baggies back. Okonkwo released the ball to Bell down the left and the ball made its way to Rankin-Costello, whose positioning allowed him to turn and release the Addicks’ attack. His driving run found Mesik on the outside, who whipped the ball into the box. It bounced about a bit before falling to Tyreece Campbell and his composed shot gave the West Brom defenders and keeper no chance. With the score level, Charlton proved they had enough to trouble West Brom and began to offer more of a threat in possession.

By eighty minutes both sides showed further signs of fatigue. West Brom had, minutes earlier, made a change and now it was Charlton’s turn. Miles Leaburn had given everything and was replaced with fellow strong, large unit, Micah Mbick. With only a few minutes of regular time left on the clock, Sonny Carey replaced Conor Coventry.

Only three minutes of added time were deemed necessary. The Addicks defended well to see the match out for a point. In fact, they had a couple of half chances to nick it but it wasn’t to be. I’m sure the Addicks will be happier of the two to split the points. West Brom have an air of confidence about them that I don’t think is deserved. They played the ball around well but it wasn’t particularly effective. It was a bit of uncharacteristic confusion at the back and a bit of luck in how the clearance fell that led to their goal. The Addicks mounted a decent strategy to contain them and worked hard to catch them on the counter. Rankin-Costello was at the heart of much of our good attacking intent when he came on and Tyler Bindon was confident and integral to our back unit, slotting in seamlessly, even if a few small errors on the ball proved dangerous. A decent point in a tricky midweek fixture to match a very good start.
