[1]Why they did it
- Raising Autism Awareness: Major players like Wes Burns and Conor Chaplin famously wore the ear defenders alongside autistic mascots to highlight sensory sensitivities. [1]
- Promoting Inclusivity: Football stadiums are incredibly loud, which can cause intense distress, sensory overload, or meltdowns for neurodivergent fans. By wearing the headphones, the players demonstrated that needing ear protection is completely normal and that football is an accessible environment for everyone. [1]

Think its a great idea our players can enter the pitch fully "enjoying" Addicks to Victory. Firstly it will angry up their blood and get them all fired up, and secondly it will mean that WE shan't have to bloody listen to it.0

Yellow coloured Toilet Duck. Why? Are there people out there who like to pretend that they share their home with a non-flushing geriatric diabetic who lives exclusively on a diet of limoncello and custard?2

I know I have mentioned this before, someone may have even attempted to explain it to me, but wonderful scoreline aside, how on earth can expected goals be less than one, when Brighton already have four?
What an absolute bullshit statistic that is. Presumably some shyster got paid to come up with this old balony?

My understanding is that xG is a descriptor of how likely it is to score a goal from that situation/position.
So, Brighton scored four from relatively difficult chances. That is, situations were you might only score once in four times. But they did it.
It's the equivalent of having three or four horses each coming in at 4/1 odds.
I don't like it either, but it's based on historical data so that gives it some credibility.0 -
xG is a nonsense stat. Sometimes it shows that Charlton have an xG of more than 0, and we all know that’s bollocks.4

Not in my eyes Dave. My late Pa-in-law, who was a wise old sort most of the time, used to say luck has no memory, to me the same applies with Xg. 🤔Dave Rudd said:Algarveaddick said:I know I have mentioned this before, someone may have even attempted to explain it to me, but wonderful scoreline aside, how on earth can expected goals be less than one, when Brighton already have four?

Not quite sure what you mean. I'm pretty sure that xG is based on historical data (ie how often a goal has been scored from an equivalent situation/position).
As an example, take a look at Brighton's second goal yesterday. Gómez scored from just inside the Palace half.
Historical data will show that goals are rarely scored from that situation, hence the xG will have been very low. Nonethless Brighton scored. The 20/1 shot happened to come off yesterday. Most times it won't.
I'm no lover of the xG stat, but I think that's how it works.
It has parallels with the long-ball tactics that were en vogue in the 1980s. Historical data reviewed at the time showed that most goals arose after no more than four touches by the attacking team. (How times have changed).
But based on that data, and using a flawed 'reverse correlation' approach, teams were encouraged to get the ball into the opposing penalty area as directly as possible, the logic being that, if a team took more than four touches in a move, they would be unlikely to score.
The 'luck' that your pa-in law refers/referred to is no more or less than statistical probability. It has no memory. It simply reflects the laws of chance.1 -
I think the BBC XG stats are famously slow to update. Sometimes the final ones aren't on there until a few hours after full time. That's possibly where the confusion is coming from.Algarveaddick said:I know I have mentioned this before, someone may have even attempted to explain it to me, but wonderful scoreline aside, how on earth can expected goals be less than one, when Brighton already have four?

Well that's hilarious, "this is what we expected four hours ago". Good job they don't use that method for weather forcasts... oh... err... hang on...cantersaddick said:

Its a good joke but despite having expected in the name it is actually a backwards looking metric. Other sources do a much more timely update of it.Algarveaddick said:

I am sure they do, unusually for me I was having a pop at the BBC for making a half arsed job of it. I assume it's for those addicts who have to gamble during game to try to get a steer on how to waste their cash? So out of date info is utterly pointless - or is it still going over my head? 🤔cantersaddick said:

In the precinct outside Bexleyheath Mall there are over one million (estimated) chewing gum stains on the floor - and yet ... I have never seen anyone gob their gum out.
Spooky eh?0 -
Clearing out my parents place the other day, and found my old Game Boy in the loft. Still working so played Supermarioland earlier.
What I'm confused by is how I still remember the maps, every secret room, which bad guys are coming next etc when I haven't played the game in 30 odd years, and yet if I go to the shops for 4 things, I only remember two and forget bread and milk.2 -
I found my Astro Wars game at my mums recently. Need to get some batteries to see if it still works (it did when I put it away).
