POST-MATCH THREAD: Stoke City v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 5th September 2026: KO 12:30

  • Started well and I was actually thinking to myself, how it was nice to finally see a Charlton team that looked like it was a physical match for a traditionally strong, powerful outfit.

Then Madley decided to get involved. That is the softest of soft penalties. 9/10 that isn't given and if VAR is in the Championship then it is overturned as they were both holding, it is just that the Stoke bloke decided to throw himself to the floor.

I am not for one moment saying Ouma had a good game, but as I said on the match thread the pile on was embarassing and seems to fit this Charlton Fan obsession with having someone to scapegoat and slag off. He clearly wasn't passing to Grant for the second, it was an attempted clearance that hit our player and dropped perfectly for Stoke. If you are going to call out Ouma why are you not equally questioning Skipp? A player established in this country who has played loads in the premier league and championship was utterly anonymous.

TBH I am more concerned with how poor Bindon has looked in his 2 games. His weak header gave West Brom a goal on Weds and he completely went to sleep for the 3rd goal today. Stood and watched the bloke. So he is currently 2 games played, 2 goals on him.

The 4th goal sums up a day when everything that could go wrong did. Their player was jumping out of the way of a shot going wide and it clips his heel and goes in.

All that being said the collective mental collapse for 20 minutes after the penalty stunk of Charlton teams of yesteryear.

Back to the referee and Linesman, I actually think the corner not given from the back pass was up there as one of the worst decisions I have ever seen. It was 3 yards over the line when their keeper cleared it.

I left the 'hi-lights' running at full time as I wanted to see McNamara's sending off again. An absolute joke of a decision. He was sent off for pointing at the goal which was interpreted as waving his hand asking for a card. Utter nonsense.
From what i've read he was a bit slow to get going on loan at Sheff Utd and even lost his place in the side, but then came back in and did brilliantly. So perhaps he just needs a bit of time to settle in. Got to bear in mind he's not even been here for a week yet and he's only 21.
Met a Forest supporter earlier this week, claims Bindon was an excellent signing for us. Time will tell.
Plenty of people on here were raving about him as well, i'd never heard of him, but will give him the benefit of the doubt and see how we get on...sure he will prove to be a good asset...

I know Collins' injury is season ending iirc, but when the fu*k are Josh, Kayne, Nathaniel and Billy gonna be fit, not to mention Matty and Charlie, our injuries seem to take an age to recover..
There’s no logic in rushing players back, it’s so early in the season if they come back too early and get injured again then what?
Of course i know that, but look at Josh in particular, he missed most of last season...
Yeah it’s a bad injury. He needs to be given every opportunity to limit that happening again. That means him playing when he’s fully fit. We know he’s training and we know NJ thinks he’ll be back by the international break.

We have a very poor record of bringing people back to full fitness after bad injuries. They always seem to take much longer than expected and do not necessarily lead to proper day in day out fitness.
Miles is the only one I can think of in recent years who has, so far, looked the part after a major oroblem.
    Am I wrong?

Winning well is easy , it's how you respond to a hard defeat that defines the character of a team. The Championship is a vicious league and it always pays to be prepared for that no matter how well you are doing. Every team is capable of tonking someone or being tonked.
A solid response is required on Wednesday. COYA!
Can't remember the last time we "tonked" a team in the Championship. We beat Ipswich 3-0 away last season, but that was not a tonking. We could have been 3 down by half time.

Any statto's out there  ?  When did we last win 4-0 at home in the Championship ?  I mean it must be fairly common as Stoke did it to to us today, as did Millwall. Last season Millwall also did it to us at the Den....and Southampton went 1 better at our place.

Nathan not holding back in his interview with Louis. He said my players threw me under the bus today.
He's deffo been a good manger for us in his time but some of his reactions in post match interviews do baffle me sometimes. Can't see how making comments like that can benefit anyone
Trying to get a rise out of players. It’s up to them to prove him wrong.
Also he spent two hours being ststematically and personally abused while his team let him down. How would you feel?

I am about at 70% blaming the ref who got it wrong on so many levels today, he is absolutely the worst referee I have ever seen and let's be honest, we have seen some L1 stinkers! His "officiating" killed us and though we didn't play well, he truly was the 12th man.

Charlton should absolutely put in an official complaint. And if he took charge of another game, boycott. Wont ever get a fair go with that fucking bald worm.

30% team selection. Can't keep chopping and changing the team to suit fitness needs. One or two changes in a settled team is fine but to swap that central midfield team out completely was nuts. They shouldn't need resting at this stage!

QPR game needs a massive response. Let's hope we get it.

It’s worth noting that Stoke are another team that have thrown millions at their window.  Not making excuses for the performance, but it’s another thing to highlight as Jones’ tried to utilise his ‘squad’ today.  We’re already hampered by injuries, and there’s probably a few in the squad that may not be ready for consistent Championship football (Ouma, Mwamba, Mbick, Nkeng etc).

I’m confident that as the season progresses, all of them will play a part.  If I had to bucket the players that are nailed on starters if fit, I’d say

    Okonkwo
    Ramsay
    Jones
    Koumetio (when fit)
    Grant
    TC

You’ve then got the following that I think can come in and do a job and I wouldn’t have a problem with them starting

    McNamara
    Bindon
    Bell
    Mesik
    Edwards
    Coventry
    Chalaboah
    Leaburn
    Godden
    Kelman
    Carey

some of these you may think are starters, but I put them in this bucket based on the fact you wouldn’t necessarily always pick Leaburn over Kelman or Coventry over Chalaboah, nor would NJ for that matter.  Someone like Coventry may emerge throughout the season as nailed on, but it’s early days

then I think the rest are players that are either going to be perennial bench warmers, mainly featuring as sub, or it’s just too early in their Charlton first team careers to tell if they can make an impact

    Mannion
    Brooks
    Burke
    Mwamba
    Ouma
    Skipp
    Alli
    Knibbs
    Apter
    Nkeng
    Mbick
    JRC

Between all of them, I hope it’s enough to comfortably achieve safety, but you can see the depth in quality just isn’t there.  Hence we see what we did today, albeit I hoped there wouldn’t have been such a collapse

As others have said, shit day, lessons to learn, more challenges re: depth given McNamara has to miss Wednesday, but I’m positive will see some sort of response

When questioned I keep being told that football of today is not the same as yesteryear.  Even though players are fitter & have better  game prep, esp around food.

I counter that with teams of 30/40 years ago played on mud heaps from December onwards & there was more "action"......defenders didnt spend 2 mins passing the ball between themselves at a snail's pace.

But we must listen to the experts who tell us football is not the same & you can't expect a fit 21 year old to play sat / wed / sat.

Perhaps someone should tell the EFL that so that clubs are allowed a bigger squad size.
There certainly were evening league games in the 60s,  70s and 80s. We also used to play Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Monday. I kid you not.

However what we did not have then was the increasing number of European club games, affecting PL clubs, but affecting the rest because there is then pressure on the FA and EFL cup dates. And now you have the international break, which really compresses things. Nor back then did we access to lots of young talented players at reasonable cost, such as Ouma, who nevertheless arrive froma far more leisurely environment. I have never watched any Polish league games, but  in terms of quality, type of player, and playing style of the Polish teams, its very similar to Czech. He was playing for the Polish champions, they will have 3-4 serious challengers, the rest are dross, Lech Poznan will  go there, and in front of about 3k fans stroll to victory. You remember Tomáš Řepka the Czech defender who played for West Ham? He collected cards like he was building a collection, we always wanted him to start against us. But at age of 33 he went back to CZ with Sparta, they played him as a sweeper. I watched him the first time I went to Viktoria. He was a revelation in that role. But it was because in that league you have the time. You havent got some pesky Johnny Robinson itching to ruin your day. It is nowhere near as intense as in England, and there are nowhere near as many important games.

That’s aggression, not intensity. A modern team would run rings around a side of that era.

PWR. Not long been back. What an afternoon that was. We were far the better side for the first ten minutes. Then they got a penalty, I still don't know why, and that was the beginning of the end.  At one nil down we absolutely shat ourselves. By the time we'd cleaned up our act the game was out of our reach. Some points about the football:
    • The passing and movement in the first ten minutes was excellent, if we can recapture that we should do well.
    • We really missed Coventry early on. It felt that the midfield wasn't protecting the defence significantly enough and that caused massive gaps to appear.
    • I'm not sure it was the right move throwing three debutants in at the same time. Maybe better to introduce them one at a time.
    • Felt sorry for TC having to come off so early. I suppose with hindsight at least we didn't concede any more, but it seemed tough on him.
    • Once again the ref offered no protection to Leaburn. The grabbing and pulling and tripping were outrageous. The first time he retaliated, his name was straight in the book.
    • That said, I think that all our forwards are inclined to go down too easily. It wouldn't surprise me if that's the word amongst the refs and that's why we get so little protection.
    • Danny Mac was obviously incensed by the bad reffing and rightly so, but we need a bit more discipline.
    • We were lucky that Leaburn didn't pick up a second yellow as well. I think he only got away with that push, because the ref was trying to even out previous bad decisions.
    • The Charlton fans were absolutely excellent, singing all the way through. Stoke fans, please put your books back on the shelves, the library is now shut for the evening.

Probably an unpopular opinion but just watched the Nathan Jones interview where he said they don't have to apologise to the fans, strange comment.

He has obviously done a good job and is supported by default as manager of the club but as a man I really do think he's a bit of prick.

He seems to have some sort of grudge against the supporters, always harping back to that Crawley game where they got a bit of stick (rightly so). He's a strange one - I can see why many dislike him.
    Weird
not really, just an observation. I think the guy is a bit of a plum.

Its factual that he has mentioned that Crawley game lots of times, I think that's weird.

ELCAFC123- NJ is has underlying feelings of insecurity and is ultra sensitive to any criticism . Just think back to those interviews with  Terry Smith in the last 2 seasons- you'd think he was being interviewed by the Police not Tel with his pro-questions for paste answers. He has become more confident with the promotion and I don't doubt that he works hard , but a football manager with a thin skin- well they are few and far between. He is in a a highly jeopardised position now as he is changing the system from ultra boring and unimaginative defensive football to something more attacking. Transitions in a game can be dangerous, similarly in football management. Have we got the right recruitment? From the misplaced passes I've seen EVEN in the games we've won I'm not sure. All I can say is I welcome the change, but I don't know how long it will last. Its a long season , and we've only just started.

Of course. Aneke came back looming great on a regular basis. Sometimes lasted three or four games too before something else cropped up. Im kind surprised you've forgotten his many comebacks!
  • Just got home after the 300 mile round trip and almost 20k in steps too (that walk really is horrendous). Usually I'd write some deep thoughtful post on here after a game, but my only thoughts today is I'm disappointed in the team, and that's the worst ref I've ever witnessed in the 30 years I've been watching Charlton.

Great away fans though and we sang our hearts out too, onwards to Wednesday with QPR and hopefully a much better performance.
No use to you now, mate, and I don't know what route you walked to the ground but I thought it was a very pleasant walk along the canal from the station all the way to the ground.

As bad as the ref was that was stupid of McNamara to run that length just to wave an imaginary card, especially with all our defensive problems.
He didn’t, he ran up to the ref and said you just booked me for the same challenge. He got booked after the ref and linesman waved play on after the ball only wet out by a yard for a Charlton corner, so many terrible decisions
  • Gutting that a terrible decision for the pen flipped the game but you have to react better than that. After 4 points from losing positions already this season I was feeling good about our mentality but not today - maybe that's the team changes showing.

You cannot be making conclusions about players at this stage though, or off the back of that game.

As others said, draw a line and onto Wednesday

The football in his tenure has been dreadful, but he's earnt the right to have an another crack this season and is trying to play more attacking style. Unfortunately for him the points deductions so far have been minimal, so 3 clubs will fight it out to stay up, unlike last season where there was one non starter, another collapsed in late January leaving only one relegation  place to avoid. I don't want Charlton to fail, but he now trying to change the style, which I approve, but will this will really test his abilities and is a big risk-can the defensive strength be maintained? Probably not.Can it be replaced by more goals for? It's very early in the season so we'll see.

I thought another angle showed it and that's what Cawley reported. Hold my hands up if I'm wrong but it still wasn't exactly the most sensible thing of Mac to do, as it proved. Ref couldn't wait to show someone a red.

Didn’t watch it, had my lads birthday party at the same time, did manage to watch bits of the first 15 minutes where we looked alright. I could just tell by the wind and the sticky pitch that it would be a slog fest. We were on the wrong side of some horrific decisions.

Ultimately NJ shouldn’t have really changed it about but as he said, he needed to freshen it up and let’s be honest, all of his tactical changes so far this season, bar today, have been top notch!

So much to be positive about, a decent start. Players to come back who will strengthen us, 2 home games back at the valley…keep the faith people!

I couldn't believe that penalty decision. I was looking thinking what's he pointing at. It was no different to any other corner and he should have settled them and retaken it.

You're certainly right that we have a poor record of rehabilitating the infirm. I'm not so sure about Miles though. He's playing very well at the moment, but It seems like it's taken a long while to get him back up to speed.

We’ve lost one game, and suddenly we are hoping for points deductions, please people get a grip, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong today. We have the chance to put it right, if we do win everyone will be talking about if we beat pompey we will be top 3 again.

He had to change to team we played two days before and chased the ball for 90 min was a hard game midweek, in this league you have to rotate and it’s up to the players selected to step up. Bad ref with some poor play from us. Next game London derby under the lights perfect game to bounce back. Still a dream start to the season for us.

Ouma appears to be good at getting in the way (albeit it occasionally  of his own teammate) but he was shocking at distribution. He was an asset to Stoke and rightfully hooked.

3 or 4 out of 5 balls from ouma are decebt but one or two so bad the oppo likely to score from them
