It’s worth noting that Stoke are another team that have thrown millions at their window.  Not making excuses for the performance, but it’s another thing to highlight as Jones’ tried to utilise his ‘squad’ today.  We’re already hampered by injuries, and there’s probably a few in the squad that may not be ready for consistent Championship football (Ouma, Mwamba, Mbick, Nkeng etc).

I’m confident that as the season progresses, all of them will play a part.  If I had to bucket the players that are nailed on starters if fit, I’d say

    Okonkwo
    Ramsay
    Jones
    Koumetio (when fit)
    Grant
    TC

You’ve then got the following that I think can come in and do a job and I wouldn’t have a problem with them starting

    McNamara
    Bindon
    Bell
    Mesik
    Edwards
    Coventry
    Chalaboah
    Leaburn
    Godden
    Kelman
    Carey

some of these you may think are starters, but I put them in this bucket based on the fact you wouldn’t necessarily always pick Leaburn over Kelman or Coventry over Chalaboah, nor would NJ for that matter.  Someone like Coventry may emerge throughout the season as nailed on, but it’s early days

then I think the rest are players that are either going to be perennial bench warmers, mainly featuring as sub, or it’s just too early in their Charlton first team careers to tell if they can make an impact

    Mannion
    Brooks
    Burke
    Mwamba
    Ouma
    Skipp
    Alli
    Knibbs
    Apter
    Nkeng
    Mbick
    JRC

Between all of them, I hope it’s enough to comfortably achieve safety, but you can see the depth in quality just isn’t there.  Hence we see what we did today, albeit I hoped there wouldn’t have been such a collapse

As others have said, shit day, lessons to learn, more challenges re: depth given McNamara has to miss Wednesday, but I’m positive will see some sort of response
I agree with your analysis to a large extent. I think overall the squad is stronger than this time last year and it’s unfortunate we have a few injuries right now.  I think we have enough about us to be safe from relegation but we are still short on quality. Even when we win games, I always think the majority of teams we play have a higher proportion of technically gifted players than us. But effort and organization on our part can sometimes stifle that and come out on top.

Hopefully we can recruit more quality as each transfer window passes but competing financially against clubs with the benefit of parachute payments and ambitious owners will continue to be tough.

Just an observation, Nathan Jones can give Apter as many 10 minute cameos, or indeed starts, as he wants but I really don’t see him being able to hack it in the Championship.

I’m concerned by the lack of info on Chalobah, we are missing him and haven’t given ourselves an alternate option which is a bit shit when the injury was likely to happen.

    Ouma God... That was terrible.

Not knocking the players though it seems most are blaming Ouma.

The real culprit here was wearing black and was more neck than man.

Really disappointing to not regain focus after the first. I do have concerns we might capitulate more often if we go behind by two goals.

If I remember properly, last season QPR got hammered the game before us and most on here thought we would beat them.
Hopefully QPR are thinking the same on Wednesday

Chalobah is really important to this team atm which I don't think most of us expected nor did the club which makes finding a deputy for him likely easier said than done that said knowing his injury history I agree with you we should really have been more prepared with the inevitable that applies to a lot of the squad (the inevitability of injury).

Playing back to back aways on Wednesday night and Saturday lunchtime should not be allowed and I hope the club raise that with the EFL.

Once or twice a season Nathan Jones tries to prove that he is some sort of tactical genius, by making wholesale changes and invariably, he gets it horribly wrong.

Unfortunately, we’re unlikely to see enough of him this season and it was always a gamble.  As we settle into the season, I fully expect Coventry and Skipp to emerge as the regular starting 2 in those holding midfield roles.  I’d love to see Chalobah alongside Coventry ideally as the starting 2, but we just cannot rely on his injury record.  Fingers crossed Ouma comes good and Mwamba can step up

Fuck the football , that was an obvious result to a pessimist like me .
Today goes down, in the annals of Charlton Athletic Football Club, as the day our fans finally found a personality, remember remember the 5th of September (2026)
It only took 121 years , never have I seen our support be that brilliant when 4-0 down away , that second half support was unbelievable full respect to the travelling fans , amazing .
Quality over quantity and that was clearly one of our best ever performances.

He had to change to team we played two days before and chased the ball for 90 min was a hard game midweek, in this league you have to rotate and it’s up to the players selected to step up. Bad ref with some poor play from us. Next game London derby under the lights perfect game to bounce back. Still a dream start to the season for us.
True - but he also decided to set us up to chase the ball for 90 minutes on Wednesday. That was a choice.

Jones also saying that as shite as  Madley was no point complaining about refereeing when we lose 4-0.

Started well and I was actually thinking to myself, how it was nice to finally see a Charlton team that looked like it was a physical match for a traditionally strong, powerful outfit.

Then Madley decided to get involved. That is the softest of soft penalties. 9/10 that isn't given and if VAR is in the Championship then it is overturned as they were both holding, it is just that the Stoke bloke decided to throw himself to the floor.

I am not for one moment saying Ouma had a good game, but as I said on the match thread the pile on was embarassing and seems to fit this Charlton Fan obsession with having someone to scapegoat and slag off. He clearly wasn't passing to Grant for the second, it was an attempted clearance that hit our player and dropped perfectly for Stoke. If you are going to call out Ouma why are you not equally questioning Skipp? A player established in this country who has played loads in the premier league and championship was utterly anonymous.

TBH I am more concerned with how poor Bindon has looked in his 2 games. His weak header gave West Brom a goal on Weds and he completely went to sleep for the 3rd goal today. Stood and watched the bloke. So he is currently 2 games played, 2 goals on him.

The 4th goal sums up a day when everything that could go wrong did. Their player was jumping out of the way of a shot going wide and it clips his heel and goes in.

All that being said the collective mental collapse for 20 minutes after the penalty stunk of Charlton teams of yesteryear.

Back to the referee and Linesman, I actually think the corner not given from the back pass was up there as one of the worst decisions I have ever seen. It was 3 yards over the line when their keeper cleared it.

I left the 'hi-lights' running at full time as I wanted to see McNamara's sending off again. An absolute joke of a decision. He was sent off for pointing at the goal which was interpreted as waving his hand asking for a card. Utter nonsense.
From what i've read he was a bit slow to get going on loan at Sheff Utd and even lost his place in the side, but then came back in and did brilliantly. So perhaps he just needs a bit of time to settle in. Got to bear in mind he's not even been here for a week yet and he's only 21.
It's as if joining your team mates before the season starts so you get to gel together might be something to try . Just saying....🤷‍♂️
Yes, Nathan Jones is a fool for not being clairvoyant and knowing that 3 centre halves would all get injured a couple of weeks after the season started.

I'm just grateful that we've got a few really intelligent fans that can point this out.

    More observations........

We win 3 games & lose 1 and we have a negative goal difference.

That co-incides with the fact that only 1 team in the top half of the table had scored less than us.....and that is Brum who play tomorrow.

Our Achilles heel still exists......we just don't score enough goals. And we really havent strengthened the striking position. We brought in Grant but he is playing either on the wing or behind the striker.

The lack of goals that you mention here Golfie is shaping how I think we need to line up on Weds. Because as you rightly point out it’s a problem.

First up - I think we have to put Carey back in. Fact is we have taken 8-10 goals a season based on last year out the team and not replaced them. We have made a problem worse.

For now I think we need to forget the other sides to his game and just get him in. Likewise for me Kelman needs to be the starter up front when he is back in a week or two….. Miles can cause havoc for a bit being able to run at a tiring defence and bash them in to submission. But he doesn’t score enough from the start.

I think if we have Kelman, TC, Carey and Grant in one team we should at the least have more goals in us.

Hoping Kelman is on the bench on Weds…. But I would start Grant, Carey and TC as the three, with Skipp and Coventry holding.

I’m not sure what all the hype is about with Bindon yet. Thought he was pretty poor at times on Wednesday and looked completely flat-footed for their third goal today.

Enjoyed reading that post @Martinspringle. The reason the Stoke GK is allowed to run so far to talk to the ref is because he’s the captain and so the only player who should be approaching the ref, as of this season

I am concerned about the lack of urgency shown in our players over the past 2 games not attacking the opposition player who has the ball 20 yards out. The WBA goal is an example of us reacting slowly to a dangerous situation and the second goal today Ouma just stood there instead of racing to attack the ball.

    Thank mate.

Though IFAB have a clear directive on this issue. “Where the goalkeeper is the captain, the referee must be told, no later than at the coin toss before kick-off, which player is nominated to approach the referee instead of the goalkeeper.”

This rule exists precisely to avoid a goalkeeper running 50 or 60 yards out of his goal to get involved in incidents. Which is exactly what happened today.

Best we have played in a four-goal beating.

Too many changes and experiments at the same time. Just cope with the injuries before experimenting.

Was never a fan of Jones as captain. Not the right temperament or position and detracts from his own game. I would suggest Skipp, but it might cause him to lose the rest of his hair.

Was Campbell injured, or jut being saved for Wednesday? If the latter, surely Jones had not written the Stoke game off that early?
i'm afraid Jones wrote the stoke game off when he picked the team - i like Nj, i rate Nj highly but i'm under no illusions that he didn't write today off to concentrate on the next 2 home games - its the away fans i feel for - like spurs but worse - not criticising NJ, he does what he thinks is right looking at the bigger picture

Feel for Jones today, arguably the biggest game of the season for him personally and was let down by some absolute stupid player errors. When you get outplayed the manager usually takes a lot of responsibility and rightly so but we battered them for the opening 10-15 and then the players made mistake after mistake at 1-0 and lost their heads.

I don’t believe he got it wrong today otherwise we would have been outplayed from minute 1, players making non-league errors is not the manager getting it wrong

Annoyingly, we play on Wednesday (QPR), then Pompey on Saturday, but Pompey have no midweek game, as I assume their opponents are still in the EFL Cup.

So 2 weeks running, we'll be more tired than our opponents. Indeed significantly so.
In over 60 years of watching Charlton we have played 2 games a week on and off I can’t understand why people make a big thing about it They are professional Athletes supposedly so don’t do so much training during the week . Oh and if we didn’t have a midweek game players still get injured in training
couldn't agree more - professional athletes should be able to play 2 lots of 90 minutes a week - absolute nonsense to say otherwise

We play Saturday midweek Saturday midweek Saturday midweek. We can’t play our best 11 every week players need to rest
Is this a modern day thing? Back in the 90s I swear this wasn’t a thing for example.
When questioned I keep being told that football of today is not the same as yesteryear.  Even though players are fitter & have better  game prep, esp around food.

I counter that with teams of 30/40 years ago played on mud heaps from December onwards & there was more "action"......defenders didnt spend 2 mins passing the ball between themselves at a snail's pace.

But we must listen to the experts who tell us football is not the same & you can't expect a fit 21 year old to play sat / wed / sat.

Perhaps someone should tell the EFL that so that clubs are allowed a bigger squad size.
There certainly were evening league games in the 60s,  70s and 80s. We also used to play Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Monday. I kid you not.

However what we did not have then was the increasing number of European club games, affecting PL clubs, but affecting the rest because there is then pressure on the FA and EFL cup dates. And now you have the international break, which really compresses things. Nor back then did we access to lots of young talented players at reasonable cost, such as Ouma, who nevertheless arrive froma far more leisurely environment. I have never watched any Polish league games, but  in terms of quality, type of player, and playing style of the Polish teams, its very similar to Czech. He was playing for the Polish champions, they will have 3-4 serious challengers, the rest are dross, Lech Poznan will  go there, and in front of about 3k fans stroll to victory. You remember Tomáš Řepka the Czech defender who played for West Ham? He collected cards like he was building a collection, we always wanted him to start against us. But at age of 33 he went back to CZ with Sparta, they played him as a sweeper. I watched him the first time I went to Viktoria. He was a revelation in that role. But it was because in that league you have the time. You havent got some pesky Johnny Robinson itching to ruin your day. It is nowhere near as intense as in England, and there are nowhere near as many important games.
We also played Christmas day and boxing day,we also had much smaller squads,I remember Liverpool winning the league using only 14 players,we also had replays,2nd replays and sometimes even more, also no subs,so minor knocks and even more serious knocks had to be put up with,no international breaks, international games played midweek.Week after week, clubs played the same 11,no resting or rotating,so why cant players play 40-50 games a season today.

I’ve never been to a game where we have been roasted 4-0 and the entire Charlton away fans stayed, applauded and sang until every player left the pitch. Felt immensely proud to be a Charlton fan today and could see the players were grateful for our support. Those ten men played with a lot of heart in that second half, against their eleven and three officials, who were f’king diabolical.
And to top it off, at about 80 minutes my CTV commentary switched to Stoke commentators. The driver they came out with was as one-eyed as the ref.
"This Charlton team are trying to, Leave One On the Stoke players with every challenge" and "The Stoke fans can be heard loud and clear" when it was evident that for the entire 90 minutes our fans out-shouted the fairly full Stadium with 4 goals on the board.

If our fans were scored it would've been 10-0.

A solid response is required on Wednesday. COYA!

Really looking forward to the reaction if PeterGage comes on here later and tells us why all Madley's decisions were in fact correct
To be fair, if you look at the penalty or the red card in isolation, they may be justifiable. The problem, as I mentioned earlier, was consistency. And that’s both consistency with what all the other refs in the league are doing (giving a pen rather than speaking to people wrestling in the box, then retaking the corner), and consistency throughout the game (bookings for us, not bookings for them, often for worse offences).

The only exception is the corner that wasn’t given, which was absolutely, clear as day, a wrong decision. But that doesn’t necessarily make the decision to book McNamara wrong.

Dont get me wrong, I’m not defending the ref. He had a honking game. But individual decisions are defendable.

And whether you agree with @PeterGage or not, he gives his opinion in good faith and I respect his expertise. I understand why it might sometimes seem like he’s defending refs all the time, but that’s often because he brings a perspective we might not all have.

Edit: I should add, in no way would I presume to speak for @PeterGage
I’ve no idea what his opinion is on these incidents.
I agree with this, many of his decisions weren't clearly and obviously wrong, but he was inconsistent.

I very rarely criticise refs, it's a tough job.  But he was not inconsistent today imo.  I can't help thinking that was a proper bent performance by the ref.  I haven't lost it that much at a football game in years.  They fouled our players relentlessly from about minute 2 or 3 and the first player booked was Leaburn.  Sorry, I am simply not having that.  I lost count of the number of bookable offences by their players.  The tackle on Leaburn when Mcnammara was sent off was just one of many.

I almost left at that point, reached the door and had a change of heart as I have never left that early before and went back for the rest.

I am glad I did as the atmosphere was great for the rest of the game, but more importantly after I did leave then due to poor train booking, I found myself obliged to pass some 2 hours in what must be counted amongst the most cheerless and souless places I have yet encountered. The aspect of the town was one of marked desolation, as though long bereft of prosperity; its streets bore the unmistakable signs of neglect, and the general air was one of hardship endured without relief.

I can only imagine Bet365 has sucked all money and hope from most Stoke residents, who generally looked a desperate bunch of hard luck types.  It was so grim I spent an hour aimlessly wondering around a Sainsburys to seek refuge from the melancholy that existed outside of its doors.  My boy asked if there was an asylum there and everyone had escaped.

In a way I feel happy for those Stoke fans to have experienced a little joy in their lives, especially when they will inevitably finish top half, fail to be promoted and soon enough be hit with over spending under FFP rules which will crush even that small glimmer of hope in their joyless lives.
I've been to Stoke 3 times I think and that was 3 times too many.
The Weatherspoons ain't great and no away fans were allowed last time I went (which is why you shouldn't wear colours), but is preferable to Sainsburys.

NB Stoke was a northern slum long before B365 was formed in 2000.
I remember going to The Victoria Ground in about 1978.

They can obviously play 2 games a week, but they won't be at their peak performance levels if they do so all season.

They would also be more likely to pick up injuries if they are playing with knocks and strains etc.

Surely you must have a tiny bit of common sense and understanding of football?

Is this not a generational thing that is true also in other contexts away from football 🤔?

The younger generation statistically drink less and have sex less, for example.
They are more anxious, get stressed more easily, suffer more from depression, commit
     more self-harm
    - just google these issues for millenials and generation Z.

They also, it seems to me, party less, don’t ever ever ever dance, and generally have less fun (OPINION)

This all then influences arguments in football that the demands are too high: they are at risk of injury, the stress is too great, tiredness is too prevalent etc.

I might be wide of the mark, but I can sense there's an anti-NJ element to our support who are just waiting for enough ammo to have another pop at him.
The football in his tenure has been dreadful, but he's earnt the right to have an another crack this season and is trying to play more attacking style. Unfortunately for him the points deductions so far have been minimal, so 3 clubs will fight it out to stay up, unlike last season where there was one non starter, another collapsed in late January leaving only one relegation  place to avoid. I don't want Charlton to fail, but he now trying to change the style, which I approve, but will this will really test his abilities and is a big risk-can the defensive strength be maintained? Probably not.Can it be replaced by more goals for? It's very early in the season so we'll see.
he saved us from the drop to league 2, he then got us promoted to the championship, he then kept us up and earlier today, we were top of the championship - we might not have been 1970 brazil but we certainly haven't been dreadful
  • Huge element of luck to 3 of their 4 goals. Add that to the hopeless Ref and poor team selection, meaning a completely new midfield of players who hadn't played together, and weren't up to speed, and the outcome was inevitable.
It happens. Not point dwelling on it, just put all our energy and thoughts into the next two games. This will be quickly forgotten if we can pick up at least 4 points next week.
