People are criticising McNamara for "running a long way to remonstrate with the referee".

Have they thought that he may have been coming over to take the free kick?

We’ll never know because he got himself sent off before the free kick was taken.

Two new refs on the circuit Zac Kennard-Kettle and Andy Madley please no !!!!!

Andy Madley has been a referee at the topend of the game for years. He was the ref for our PO Final in 2019.

Not sure what point you are making?

No, I got that wrong actually.

It was the other way round. He said 100% safe then after the Preston match said:

73% Safety and another crack of the whip earned by NJ

27% relegation and get rid of the manager and 75% of this shit house squad .

Anyway, don’t get me wrong - I don’t really want to be getting on his back.  I really love @oohaahmortimer posts, and if I could choose to meet any lifers I don’t really know in real life, then he would probably be top of the list, as I find him so funny.

Interesting that Nathan said in his interview with Louis that our Net Spend this summer is £1.5m. Good from the financial/SCR perspective.
I read yesterday that Stoke’s summer net spend was £30m!! Didn’t realise they’d spent that kind of money in one transfer window.

It massively goes against what some people were saying about the budget being the same as last summer’s one.

Note to NJ…we are not a Man City or Liverpool…we don’t have strength in depth….play your best XI available
We play Saturday midweek Saturday midweek Saturday midweek. We can’t play our best 11 every week players need to rest
Is this a modern day thing? Back in the 90s I swear this wasn’t a thing for example.
When questioned I keep being told that football of today is not the same as yesteryear.  Even though players are fitter & have better  game prep, esp around food.

I counter that with teams of 30/40 years ago played on mud heaps from December onwards & there was more "action"......defenders didnt spend 2 mins passing the ball between themselves at a snail's pace.

But we must listen to the experts who tell us football is not the same & you can't expect a fit 21 year old to play sat / wed / sat.

Perhaps someone should tell the EFL that so that clubs are allowed a bigger squad size.
I have been watching football since the 1940s. I am amazed when I nowadays see video clips of top level matches from '40s and '50s. The whole game is played at Rankin-Costello pace.

Does it? I imagine the wage bill has increased significantly and we probably paid some hefty signing on fees.

I wouldn't put much store by what the manager says post match, especially when he upset, annoyed & likely to say anything to anyone.

On a similar note I've read on here people saying NJ said that the players threw him under a bus. Listening to Louis Mendez's interview  this morning he actually said the players sold him down the river.

I realize that that this will probably be an unpopular point of view, but it was a stonewall penalty, especially when viewed from beside the goal.
It was a penalty, whether the majority disagree or not and they do disagree.
I think they mainly disagree because these penalties at corners occur in the majority of games and are never given.

Sunderland were given a penalty yesterday for a very similar foul (although it came from a regular cross, not a corner.

So, to sum it all up. It was just a bad day at the office and these things happen once in a while, especially when you come up against a very bad referee.

So.....no point being glum. We have 10 points from 5 games, which is promotional form and would have bitten your arm off at the start of the season.

Finally, no need to panic. Things will be back on track Wednesday when we will rotate the squad again, bringing back the players that won the first 3 matches. We will put QPR to the sword, followed by the usual 3- points against Pompey.

    I've got that right, yes ?  Good-o.
Good to see you are back on your meds, Golfie.

    Fake news *

even when it got tricky late on I had the foresight with 3 games left to want us to lose against Ipswich therefore stopping the scum from automatic promotion because there was enough variables .

After a promising start, that was a catastrophic first half performance and, after the penalty, we were completely run over. If there weren’t games coming up in midweek, I think Stoke would have kept their foot on the gas and scored a couple more in the second half, especially when we went down to 10 men.

The midfield selection of Ouma, Skipp and JRC backfired horribly and they were completely overwhelmed by Galbraith and Soumare. McNamara’s sending off leaves us with potentially 9 players out for Wednesday and a big response is required against QPR. We then have Pompey on Saturday, who have a game-free midweek.

We need to put this car crash of a game behind us - and quickly. Kudos to the travelling faithful, who supported the team gallantly to the end. That must have puzzled the Stoke supporters, who need very little excuse to turn on their own team.

I hope we can give Stoke a good seeing to when they come to The Valley. I find their players and supporters equally distasteful.

We played poorly after the 1st goal and didn’t deserve anything.  The ref was beyond inconsistent striving for incompetent.

BUT We do have a hammering in us, it isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last - tbh I expected it to be at West Ham.

That said, it is way more important to just deal with it and move on from a bad day.  So back to the basics that gave us a fantastic 2pts per game average, park that game as a blip, get the Valley bouncing and take it out on QPR and Portsmouth.
  • Ouma appears to be good at getting in the way (albeit it occasionally  of his own teammate) but he was shocking at distribution. He was an asset to Stoke and rightfully hooked.
I can’t tell whether he’s going to be good or not - the problem is the game is just to fast for him at them moment and it looks like he’s rushing everything. Hopefully he’ll improve as he sees more game time, but I looks like it could be rough for a while.

Ouma was part of the play when we occasionally moved the ball quickly forward, and he has shown quick feet in close up situations with opposition. I just think he was unlucky to come up against a determined referee yesterday, then snatched at a clearance when he needn't have. I also prefer to keep an open mind for now, rather than condemning the bloke. I was more unhappy with Skipp for taking at least two long shots, high and wide. Hate to see that from any of ours.

I'd say the 90s was the best era for football - still a physical game, but played at a good pace, with plenty.

Whether a team from today would beat their equivalent from that era is another question. Although, the 90s team would probably finish the game with about five men left on the pitch!
That depends on whether you had a ref from the 90s or from 2026. If you had a ref from the 90s, it would be the 2026 team who’d finish with fewer players because they’d be getting constantly booked for holding, shirt pulling and time wasting through feigning injury.

Besides, I think people are getting confused between the 70s and the 90s. Teams were dirty in the 70s; they’d often be intentionally fouling the opposition, but this impression comes from videos of Leeds and Chelsea online.  If you watch the Big Match revisited on TV you’ll see that it wasn’t really that bad.

In the 90s you still had the attitude that ’he was going for the ball’ when he caught the man and ’he played the ball first’ when he then caught the man, but there wasn’t so much of an intention to foul.

Ultimately, the difference between the two eras was that before, players fouled with their legs and feet, and now they foul with their arms and hands.

Very good point about the methods of fouling, having watched football for over 70 years,I really dont recall in decades gone by players being pulled back, shirts being tugged etc.,cant think when this all started, probably with the influx of foreign players, same with the dramatics.
And it's fairly easy to stop as well. Any shirt pull or holding with hands or arms is an automatic yellow. And - sorry to say but arms round an attacker in the box is a pen and a card. Call me old fashioned but I am bored with cinical professional fouls and diving. Game's gone! Sort it.
  • Ouma was absolutely shocking yesterday, went down for a beer at 3-0, didn’t go back up had 2 pints and fucked off, got a train to Stafford and had a few pints whilst waiting for our train back

After all the dust has settled on this game, two things are now very clear. We did not get a good right winger and we do not have a proper number 10.
We have to live with this now at least until January, and hope somebody steps up in the mean time.
