I have never met Charlie Methven and haven't had much involvement in the last four years due to other commitments, but I'll happily pitch my involvement at Charlton since 1988 up against his any day of the week. Unlike him I've never been banned from the ground, either.

As someone who knows personally everything he did for the club its refreshing to see someone else giving him credit, he played an integral aprt in our survival as a club both on and off the field. Obviously he was shown in a bad light in the Sunderland documentary but also coupled with a section of our "fans" who actively want the club to fail and wouldnt be happy unless a name from "the good old days" was in charge, he was never going to be given a fair crack.tallboy said:I stated it when he left but the fact he made himself available in the Fans bars before and after matches and was seemingly keen to listen to alternate opinions was a refreshing change from other club officials.

Well he did once heavily imply there was some form of impropriety (potenially legal implications) in relation to Kaheim Dixons transfer to us and started biting at others fans when they asked for more info. Anyway never heard anything about that since.Gillis said:

I have no doubt you are right, and I don't begrudge him for his leaving statement setting out all of his achievements, even if, taken at a different point in time, it would be quite different (had he written it 5 months ago, it would have been about a championship team struggling to avoid an immediate return to the 3rd tier, and a woman's team about to blow a chance of promotion...)Radostanradical said:

But let's not buy the love and adulation he sets out. He was in it for the ROI and the status, not because of a deep seated love of the club and the area, and if he could have cashed in after 4 months rather than 4 years, he absolutely would have. That doesn't mean he can't have an attachment to the club - why wouldn't he, but to have a pop at anyone far more connected with a club than he ever would be, was poor.8 -

I find it interesting that people like Methven generally come in for criticism from people like us.
Maybe it's the very difference that triggers the defensive autoresponse.
But we should aspire to be more like him ... a man with no discernable talent, but who excels at self-promotion and opportunism. The one million or so NEETS who are currently a headache for the UK economy would do well to see how Methven has progressed by simply using his Eton education and Oxford Theology degree (two lectures a week and an overall assessment based on a brief dissertation, no doubt) to wonderful effect.
It's interesting too that Methven was able to allude to the Saviour of SE7 by using one simple and inaccurate descriptor ... "some guy who had worked in the ticket office 20 years previously". He could have been a lot more scathing, of course, but this was a masterstroke in deprecation that hit the spot instantly.
It's nice too that Methven and his family will miss SE London. Chislehurst and/or Court Road in Eltham represent the very heartland of our unique part of the World and he will have found it difficult to leave after having integrated so fully into SE7 culture. I hope too that his daughter has remembered to pack her half-and-half Wrexham scarf ahead of the move.
A final test for those of you who remain sceptical ...

Let's face it, he must have something about him if he could get served enough times to run up a big bar bill, most of the time it's like trying to get a drink in a drying out clinic down there.
Still, we've had a lot worse in the job TBF, you'd need to get through a lot of beer to run up the cost of a Range Rover.

You are correct of course it was an investment furst and foremost but must say I have seen him do things for people and the club that he really didnt have to do. The issue is thats true of anyone, I liled Bowyer but he left for a bigger club as soon as he could too, its part and parcel of life. As for having a dig at someone, admittedly seems a bit petty for me but its worth looking at it both ways.SporadicAddick said:

I think you can judge Charlie by his record which he is busily trying to rewrite.
it wasn’t just some unfavourable editing on the documentary that did for Charlie. He and his co owner borrowed the money from the club to buy Sunderland and then wrote the loan off. Perfectly legal but if I was a fan I’d be furious, especially when the fans were mocked in his statements.
He never achieved promotion for them despite having PL parachute money. When they were promoted under a new owner he tried to take credit, sound familiar?
He might have had some small part in bringing the new owners in but his initial leadership was a disaster, with the club going from one terrible appointment to another. The Appleton meme came true.
The more he was pushed out of the club the better the club did. If he was so good why hasn’t he been snapped up, he’s having to wait for another distressed club to try and work his way into.
I’m sure if anyone knows the guy, they’d say he’s a charming, top bloke and I’m sure he will spin a good yarn on how good he is but the facts don’t lie.6
