Miles off it and has been for months if we’re being honest.

All the shagging has obviously taken its toll.

He looks completely shot of all confidence. Frustrating for everyone because we know what he can do… we saw that last season. NJ needs to get this guy back to his best. If he does, then we’ve got a decent attack. At the moment he’s the weak link.

Might benefit from a few cameo appearances from the bench, when (if) the game starts to open up a bit. Chasing shadows at the moment but not helped by a centre-midfield that seems to be doing the same.
  • Surely Knibbs gets a chance? Not massively convinced he is Champ quality but Carey has reached point he is actively hiding in games - needs taking out for a period

Just really doesn’t suit the system, can drive with the ball and shoot well, but asking him to be a creative midfielder and operate in tight areas just not his game.

Fwiw I don't think Knibbs or Carey have what it takes to be our 10.

For me Mwamba is a better option quicker and better passer than both these two, but I worry about his inexperience, then again... if they're good enough, they're old enough.

I think fans getting aggy with him just before half time was a bit unfiar and short sighted. We had barley had any posession of the ball for about 30 minutes and we needed to get to half time at 0-0. Rather than play what would have been quite speculative balls forward, 3 or 4 minutes away from half time he decided to retain posession. I was ok with his decision to retain posession, although we probably lost the ball 2 passes later anyway!

He's obviously finished with the Charlton wives and made a start on the refs' and linos' because there has to be a reason we've been stuffed by officials' decisions recently.

I have no clue if it is a lack of confidence thing or just not fitting in with our new set up but at the moment he is adversely effecting the team. All he does is pass backwards which allows the opposition press to come on to us. For me he comes out of the starting lineup until he gets sorted

Time for a spell out of the team. Mwamba or JRC at home for me, maybe Knibbs away.

Mwamba is not an attacking midfielder.  He wasn’t an attacking mid in the youth setup or his brief time in the main squad.  His game isn’t based on creative passing or speed. He is a holding midfielder who can push forward occasionally. His game is all about his strength and being tidy on the ball.  That would not be a good fit let alone throwing a 19 year old in a position he is not comfortable with might be detrimental to his development.

Carey is good driving with the ball, getting his head down and shooting - he's very good at that.  He frequently hits the target and forces the keeper to work.

Where he is weak is decision making and passing - he's very poor at that.  He gets into promising positions but doesn't just make the wrong choice - he doesn't make one and either shoots or is dispossessed.

Unfortunately we have the same problem as last season - we have zero creativity and Carey isn't going to bring it.

Taking this into account (his willingness to shoot on sight) with our problems up front this weekend, do we just stick him in the number 9 if Leaburn is out seeing as Kelman will likely be on the bench only, and Mbick may not be ready to start in the champ? Probably not ideal but not many other options.
  • Carey having Chalobah in the midfield behind him allows him a bit more space to operate and do what he does best. Without that he has been exposed in this system and it doesn't work.

Agree he needs to be allowed to come from the bench and impact the game in the last 30 mins to try and find his way into form. Knibbs, Grant and TC all linked well in the PSF against Colchester and Knibbs looked sharp - so I am amazed he hasn't had any game time as yet.

Agree it’s not his natural position but I think that’s downplaying his attacking play. He put Leaburn through away at Spurs with a well weighted pass and he’s shown in this season he can drive into space.

The benefit of playing him there is any mistakes are likely to be made higher up the pitch, and he has the pace and energy to press and track back.

It’s not as if Grant, Carey, JRC or Knibbs are standing out in that position. I wouldn’t be against seeing what he can do there given we don’t have a clear first choice. It’s not as if it’s a completely different position, Mwamba has some of the qualities we need in that role.

Not the worst idea, he would probably bring some goal threat though his lack situational awareness and/or poor decision making means he probably wouldn't link up very well with Grant/TC etc.

Is he though ? or should I say is he at the moment ? last night he had opportunities to do exactly that and only did it once the other times he turned back towards our half and passed it back to Bell or Jones

It's one thing being out of form and playing shit, it's quite another actively hiding in games and being a passenger, and that's what he was last night
  • It's not. Being out of form and playing poorly is exactly why you are seeing him as a 'passenger' and 'hiding'

That was the loudest shout of NOOOOO!!! When Mesik had acres of space to cross but chose to pass back  I’ve heard in a long time. So think Sonny  got away with a bit😂

I think we are just seeing what the Blackpool fans said. He’s a player that is either in great form, playing well most games and scoring goals, or he’s not very good. This looks like a period of him not being good, but I’m sure we will see another purple patch at some point. Just seems to be that type of player

A shame it seems there's not much competition for the place. Or at least none that Jones seems to trust.

Dunno what Knibbs has got to do to get a look in given how off it Carey has been since the Cheltenham game really

I don’t think he’d suit the role any better tbh. When he plays in the 10 he’s usually nearer the striker than the midfield, that’s not what we need unless we are going to go much more direct. This season the 10 role has been about picking the ball up deeper and then finding the front 3, which is why Carey has struggled, and Knibbs would too because that isn’t their game. Costello does it well but can’t run enough when we don’t have the ball

Only chance Knibbs might have is if Leaburn is out and we play Grant up top, we might want Knibbs to play as an out ball to go long too. Otherwise I can’t see him getting much of a chance and will be out on loan in January
  • That decision he made for the throw in seconds before halftime was so unbelievable

The fact the time on the scoreboard is so big and and facing the direction he was looking aswell

plus the manager has just got a yellow for complaining so much as it was already over time

and he still did it short

    Proper 🤡 moment !

Not sure why we need a number ten.  Play a high energy midfield three and try to get more possession .  Allow Mesik to get forward from left back.
