Its a bit of a cliche but NJ teams often do start slowly and build momentum later - and with the amount of injuries we have its certainly not helping. Get some of them back from injury and make a few tweaks to find the ideal combination/formation and its possible (but by no means certain) that things pick up on that front.SELR_addicks said:Chris_from_Sidcup said:
It's not really a major surprise though. Our front 4 last night cost us precisely £0. The 4 subs we brought on probably cost us around 2m combined. Half of those 8 players came out of our academy.SELR_addicks said:6 games played with 6 goals scored. Leaving us joint 22nd for goals scored. Was the issue last season, looks like nothing has changed there.
In a division where some teams are spending 10-15m on players i don't think it's a shock that we're not not cutting teams apart and scoring 2-3 goals every week.We have attempted to invest in the positions though, we've signed Grant, Alli, Nkeng. Changed the formation too but nothing seems to have changed in our in-possession chance creation.

Content with a point and hoping Leaburn's injury isn't too serious.Wasn't the most fluid game we have played, far too many misplaced passes and clearances giving the forward no chance of running on to them. Think Mbick showed glimpses of what he is about, like Leaburn he just needs some time and more cameos.Mesik gave a another good solid performance. The fact some are unhappy with a draw to QPR but 5th in the table after 6 games is a very good position to be in.Onto Saturday, likely another tough game so soon after these ones.4

We’re the best we’ve been for coming up to 20 years. Honestly just go watch Arsenal or someone. Melts.4 -
An excellent point but a turgid watch.
After 10 minutes when we didn't lay a glove on QPR for an eternity it seemed like they had an extra player?
I then realised with QPR Keeper Charles playing as a Sweeper with the best passing range I have seen from a goalie they did have an extra outfield player !!!
The two best passes that spring to mind from CAFC were Carey to TC which he failed to control and the sublime pass from Skipp to TC which he did control and finish well. Like others I was screaming that it was onside but once I saw it for the 10th time I wasn't so sure. I wanted VAR in just that incident to put their lines to prove it one way or the other.
If this was boxing we lost every round after the 1st round and we lose a unanimous points decision over ten rounds 99-91; fortunately it's football and unlike against Stoke we either defended well or they were Profligate in front of goal, plus Arthur did a good save with his feet on the rare occasion they were on target.
I recorded the match and was intending to watch again our glorious victory but instead deleted as soon as the final whistle went !
A brilliant point but boy do we need a fit Chalobah back and Ramsay plus Kelman to be in the squad ready to impact as we can't keep jogging after shadows.

Mbick is a big part of the discussion. Coming back from a bad injury and played last season in League 2 I believe. Now being thrown into Championship football. There was a point in tge second halfvshere he controlled a rotten clearance from us despite being surrounded by at least 3 QPR players, and danced out from all three. Time needed.Sword65pf said:Shut the fucking entry onto the A2 at Falconwood!!!!!,so just got in, Anyway, we were second best really wasn’t we?, but we got a point. Wasn’t pretty but not going to moan at the moment as real judgement of us will come I’m guessing after the international break, hopefully players will come back fit and we can play the way NJ has built the squad for, we’ve had a decent start that will look better for a win on Saturday , we are in a bit of survival mode until then. We aren’t getting the rub of the green either at the moment particularly with officials which is usually the way when we least need it with the injury issues. Think we need to keep calm take our point and as somebody else has said, take a little look at the table. We have lots of room for improvement. Side notes, Chalobah massive miss, MBICK , I’m really struggling to see what he’s all about, not giving up on him or anything, but not getting it. Miles hope the injury isn’t too bad, Sonny I’ve been backing up but what’s going on.
Carey worries me. I loved the goals he scored last season, but his decision making is basically wrong every time.
The goal was onside andvthe penalty was a shoulder.3 -
Fellas, the goal was marginally offside if you look at it from the side-on angle. Everyone is getting worked-up over nothing. It that's what we need to feel better then go off, but it wasn't a mistake5

I find last night and the WBA game an interesting comparison on teams that have adopted the possession based style of football, versus the fact that it’s never been something that we have seen as a team since it became fashionable.
Timeline wise since Barca maybe pioneered it in the late 00s, we’ve generally been a bang average to mediocre league one team, but even in our promotion seasons 11/12, 18/19 and 24/25, we’ve just never been that club. I’m not saying we haven’t played some good football, it just seems like it’s definitely a big part of a lot of clubs’ style these days, but for whatever reason we’ve never gone down that route
I recall the start of the season under Peeters when we had Bouyens etc, I think it was Watford/Forest (a night game), we hinted that we were going to play that way and move the ball quickly. It didn’t last however
I think it was in Garner’s head we could play that way when he took over, and it was a hard watch trying to watch Inniss get his head around using his feet.I’m not advocating for us to have gone down that route. We’ve been effective in finding our own approach over the last few years, and we don’t have the players. I think a large part of it is that a lot of these clubs have gone for overseas coaches/managers and they probably feel more comfortable implementing it.There’s definitely a few more teams that we’ll play this season that like that approach, Soton, Swansea etc
Based on last night, we just need to be a bit calmer and better in possession. I wouldn’t expect us to be able to match QPR, they were obviously very comfortable playing that way and we’d get easily beat if we started trying to match it. The challenge will be the fatigue and how long the team can hold out in games when they see that little of the ball.4 -
We are 3 points better off now than we were at this point last season.
We can certainly play better but getting points here and there isn't a bad thing.10 -
A free transfer released by West brom who finished below us last season.SELR_addicks said:Chris_from_Sidcup said:

A 1.5m signing from Luton in league one who scored 1 in 21 on loan at Portsmouth last year.
A 19 year old kid from Wimbledon who was on loan at Chatham this time last year.

I'd have taken a point before the game but not really the performance. That said after the beating we took a few days ago a clean sheet was a good take away. We weren't competing with QPR rather being a wall in a game of wall ball. That said on another day we might have nicked the game with a decision that goes for us, (the offside), then we would be top this morning and all negatives would have become positives.
We drew against a better team last night, 3 points against Pompey Saturday and the world will be a different place.0 -
Currently we sit at 23rd for possession, 24th for XG and 24th for major chances created.
I don’t think it’s a wild assumption to say that if those numbers continued across the whole season we would find ourselves at the other end of the table to where we are now.
Im sure we will improve with our players coming back, but as Jones pointed out, lots of teams are in a similar position injury/schedule wise - so no doubt they will improve as well.
Ultimately though if we can beat Portsmouth and get a draw against Cardiff we are going into the international break in a great position.

I was bored out of my mind when we had that idiot Garner playing tippy tappy with poor footballers in tier 3, especially at midweek matches at The Valley that was virtually empty.jimmymelrose said:

That will get the crowds flooding back!
The whole point of football is that try to score a goal. If the other team is better than you, then so be it.
But QPR weren't better than us. They had players out injured & were there to be beaten. Sadly we didn't even try.
How comes we let them come at us like their at home then?
I'm with golfie on this - we didn't try to play on the front foot at all. We relied solely on the tactic of catching them on the break.
It's supposed to be entertainment. Watching Charlton now feels like an obligation.
I'm not ever going to support anyone else so if you don't like me moaning about it, tough shit. It was shit, just admit it. You were all bored out of your minds but refuse to admit it.
Rather put up with last night in the Championship with a good atmosphere, half decent sized crowd for us, and a group of players who appear to give a shit16 -

Not exactly great stats but we have played away to West brom (top), West ham (2nd) and Stoke with 10 men for 40 minutes.FishCostaFortune said:Currently we sit at 23rd for possession, 24th for XG and 24th for major chances created.

Their bloody keeper pissed me off, we just stood there and gave him freedom to roam, gave them an extra outfield player 🤦2

28% possession 0 shots on target couldn't string more than 3 passes together, but you're classed as miserable and told to grow up for being slightly critical, deary me.15

The context here is really important. Our start has been far from easy against some top sides. We’re not going to dominate the ball against many at all, and certainly not those lot.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

The possession stats for the Preston game were much more level, I think we shaded them actually??? And we were very comfortable in that game and should’ve beaten them by more.
People have a recency bias when they look at how our season is going to go. After the Preston game lots were purring about how we’d developed our style of play, TC playing in his right position, Cov was getting on the ball and passing forward.
Injuries have really affected that style of play recently, but it’ll come back. Some people need to take a breath

But I look forward to the day when we as a fanbase can turn around and say: "Gosh didnt we play so well, we passed the ball so beautifully... Shame we lost, but never mind, that doesnt matter"1

The thing is it’s not ‘slightly critical’ though is it. In some cases it’s a full on tantrum/melt down.TD_Addick said:28% possession 0 shots on target couldn't string more than 3 passes together, but you're classed as miserable and told to grow up for being slightly critical, deary me.
We’ve been decimated by injuries and are still on 11 points with an international break looming. Was it pretty? No. Do we want that kind of football to continue? No. Have we played like that all season so far. No.
Take a step back and have a look at the whole season so far. In patches we’ve played some great counter attacking football. Recently not so much6 -
I've been disappointed with Bindon.
I thought he'd make his place in the team safe, coming from the Premier League. But expect Big Billy to come straight back in.
However, if LJ was to get injured (please no!) He would probably fit in their better than Burke.2 -
I suspect he goes steaming up the pitch every day in training thinking he is Glenn Hoddle.eastterrace6168 said:Their bloody keeper pissed me off, we just stood there and gave him freedom to roam, gave them an extra outfield player 🤦
Don’t remember seeing a keeper so comfortable with the ball at feet and being utilised out the box so much7 -

Bindon was mostly good except for a couple of errors, I'd keep faith (although Koumetio will go back in when fully fit)3 -
He was very much a last minute replacement for an area we thought we had enough bodies, still early days with him for usSteveACS said:I've been disappointed with Bindon.

Feels like an overreaction to what was an ok point against a decent side. Felt QPR played the ball around well but without much substance going forward. Biggest disappointment for me was Okonkwo time wasting late on when it actually felt like we had a little bit of momentum.
Not sure why Mbick and Bindon are being written off. People have no patience9 -

Agreed, pretty disappointed with a lot of his work, but he is young, has had very little time with us and even between now and Saturday it's only recovery time no time to blend with players on the training field.JohnnyH2 said:
