Comparing 25/26 to 26/27 game by game

Last season we ended up with 53 points from 46 games. One way of comparing the progress we make is to compare last seasons results to this season fixture by fixture.

To make this comparison possible promoted/relegated teams are paired in last season’s table order so we compare Coventry results against West Ham, Hull against Wolves, Sheff Wed against Bolton and so on.

Fixture - Points 25/26 - Points 26/27 - Difference - Cumulative Difference


Derby (H) - 0 - 3 - +3 - +3

West Ham (A) - 0 - 3 - +3 - +6 (→ Coventry)

Preston (H) - 0 - 3 - +3 - +9


Next Five:

West Brom (A) - 1

Stoke (A) - 0

QPR (H) - 1

Portsmouth (H) - 0

Cardiff (A) - 3 (→ Leicester)

If we were performing to the level of last season’s results, we’d expect to have just 5 points after the first 8 games taking us into the international break.

    West Brom (A) - 1 - 1 - 0 - +9

    Stoke (A) - 0 - 0 - 0 - +9

    QPR (H) - 1 - 1 - 0 - +9

    Portsmouth (H) - 0 - 1 - +1 - +10


    With last season’s results we’d have 2 points (draws against WBA and QPR) from the first seven games. Instead we have 12. Next Saturday (Leicester away) would be our first three points of the season.

    See, this is what you should be looking at. Rather than the table and saying 'two points off top' with not even a quarter of the season gone. 
    Hope this carries on all season.

    More rubbish stats.

    Teams are different, with different players & different managers. Some eams have strengthened  over the summer & some have got worse.

    Boro have Lankshear this season, whereas they didnt last. So if we lose to them with him scoring the winner whereas if we drew last season does that make us worse ?

    And why is West Ham a replacement for Coventry ??  Why not for Ipswich or Hull  ??  

    We got 3 points at Portman road & 3 at The Olympic stadium. Therefore 0 gained.

    I explain it in the first post.

    Coventry won the league and West Ham finished 18th so the results are paired to make the comparison work. 

    - West Ham (18th) paired with Coventry (1st)
    - Burnley (19th) paired with Ipswich (2nd)
    - Wolves (20th) paired with Hull (P/O winners)

    - Lincoln (1st) paired with Oxford (22nd)
    - Cardiff (2nd) paired with Leicester (23rd)
    - Bolton (P/O winners) paired with Sheff Wed (24th)

    If it’s not for you, you don’t have to follow it.

    Teams evolve of course, including ourselves. This is a good way of comparing how much have we evolved versus the rest of the league.
