Phil Chapple Out?

Even if we lose the next 3 we’d all have taken 12 points from 11 games , that extrapolated over the season will see us stay up 🙄

Maybe we're doing this wrong and don't really need Chapple.
Is it just a coincidence that in a summer when Swansea decided to sign up to Tony Bloom's analytics company to assist with their player recruitment that they are now top of the Championship?0 -

Mesik and Akonkwo look good. Koumetio and Chalobah likewise but won't be fit much.

Yep. I try and stay away from here after a defeat for that reason. It was a bad day at the office and we will regroup and go again in 3 weeksNabySarr said:Lose one game and it’s meltdown season once again ffs5 -
Come on, show a bit of patience.2

To be fair, NJ seems just as guilty of this as many supporters. When you look at last summer's signings.Bournesnr said:Here we go again writing players off less than 10 games into their Charlton careers.

Apter dropped after a few weeks, loaned out in January.
Tanto who barely played, before being loaned out in January, then again in the summer.
Knibbs, a non playing substitute this season.
Burke, not even in the 25 this season.
Kaminski loaned out after a season.5 -
To be fair on NJ he sees them in training, so would have a far better insight than us just seeing them on match days.2

I think it's less about age and more about how much the modern internet-specific way of discussing football has influenced an individual. Modern social media influenced football discourse is very now now now, has amplified the louder and more controversial voices over the years and has created a new normal where people make huge, sweeping statements and early assessments of players and write down forever the things they maybe would have only said to their mates at the stadium or down the pub. It might feel like the previous generations were more patient but I think that's mostly to do with the fact that there wasn't social media back then. There's plenty of older fans on here and elsewhere who write absolutely deranged things about never wanting to see a player again after one bad performance, wanting the manager out after 2 bad performances or looking forward to a referee's eventual death. If you heard that at a stadium you'd roll your eyes and not have to deal with it again but now it gets put down on a thread and becomes a discussion point. Like Fen says I think it boils down to whether or not you've got swept into the modern way of talking about football or whether you've avoided it and kept up with the old Curbs style of not letting the highs get too high or the lows too low.ElfsborgAddick said:fenaddick said:

I wonder if the club considered signing up to Tony Bloom's football recruitment agency. I know they only rep one club per division but the slot was open this year and taken by Bolton. You cannot argue with Bloom's record/methods of signing players.0

Frittered away the clubs resources at this level too often. Poor scouting and some dreadful signings. Should he go? Surely we could do so much better.
Attributing every unsuccessful transfer to Chapple and then jumping to “he should go” ignores how recruitment actually works at clubs.
It’s a collective process involving the manager, recruitment staff, data analysis, budget constraints and the availability of players.
Chapple isn’t simply wandering around with the chequebook choosing whoever takes his fancy.

Swansea have it in the champ, it was Ipswich last season.Chunes said:I wonder if the club considered signing up to Tony Bloom's football recruitment agency. tbh how much value would we get out of it if we’re not willing to outlay the amount of money required for those players2 -
Ah right, cheers. And Swansea look very good this season.AberystwythAddick said:

I don't think it just suggests expensive players. They’ve got proprietary data across all footballers, so in theory it should help you identify the best value available at whatever level your budget is.
Apparently costs £1.5 million per year. We've easily wasted more than that on bad signings each season.3 -
Swansea spent a rumoured 15 millions quid this summer. The obvious caveat is that they sold Galbraith for 10 mill so they had cash to burn.Chunes said:

Fair enough. I think we’re a well coached side. I think the biggest thing holding us back has been some very poor transfer windows. Recruitment have to take the cop for that.stonemuse said:WoolwichAddick said:Frittered away the clubs resources at this level too often. Poor scouting and some dreadful signings. Should he go? If it was "this bloke is the new Pele - sign him up immediately", then you might have a point.
But what if it was, "this bloke has some good attributes and has potential, but he's raw and isn't the finished article. However, he's approx a quarter of the price as a Legue One equivalent, so may be worth a punt if there's nothing else to spend in the kitty".
It's all about context.
But no, despite knowing nothing about what the bloke has done or said let's call for him to be sacked. Utterly ridiculous.10 -

Was more meant for debate than calling for him to be sacked. And fair we don’t know what he’s said, but out hit rate compared to likes of Sunderland when they were in the champ, for example, seems a way off. And an obstacle to us progressing.Off_it said:

Only seems that way because we don't follow Sunderland as closely. Willing to bet they had plenty of flop transfers tooWoolwichAddick said:

Me personally, or as a general rule? I'm not someone who would claim to be an expert on assessing players, but I think the limited pitch time Ouma's had isn't enough to say at this point, especially when he's come from a different league which may not require the same level of intensity as the Championship. Also I can remember Stuart Balmer scoring 2 own goals in the first few months of his Charlton career, but going on to be player of the year a couple of seasons later, so early cock-ups aren't always indicative of overall performance .ElfsborgAddick said:aliwibble said:

How many games do you give a player before they are deemed a failure? A manager as well come to that.3 -

Meaning? My take in general.A club sack a manager and bring another one in, they have seen that he has been successful enough to warrant giving them a job. After ten games the results have not gone well and they get the bullet, it happens, I do no not understand this as patience is needed and that the club saw in the manager to give him a contract. I extend this to players and that supporters must realise the financial implications of offloading players within minutes of signing for a club.0
